So our defense isn't looking too hot to start?
Both 1st team offenses are scoring and should be in these kinds of practices. You can't hit the QB you can't hit anybody really you're taking away the ability of defenses to actually defend.

Yeah, like I'd be worried if Goff couldn't score with no pass rush.

Interesting thing I just noticed wonder if anybody else did. It looked like Weddle has the green sticker and is getting the calls in from the sidelines.

Good point. This is probably more for the rythym of the offense to develop and some cardio for your defense. Thanks for posting! Feels good to be back.

Weddle looked like Joyner v Ginn just now, awful on a great catch by #13. Didn't turn around.

Chargers long gain would have been nullified with a sack.

Matthews blew up a run play

Rivers should have been sacked again

Two professional teams with some of the best coaches going at it. Love it. Hopefully everyone stays fresh and injury free out there!

I don't subscribe to NFL/cable or any of their products any more. No point when I can stream it free, although it bites me in situations like this.
How do you stream it for free? Whenever I try, they ask for my cable/satellite provider.

When asked who has stood out the most so far in camp, Gurley said Fowler is a new animal and getting to the qb as fast as Donald.

If Fowler has reached his potential or anywhere close to it he's gonna be the best edge rusher we've had since prime Robert Quinn. If we have that kind of presence along with AD we are going to rake in the sacks this year!

I couldn't get today's practice up via NFL.com for the same reason. I don't subscribe to NFL channel and it asks for a provider.

What I was referring to is gameday, when there are always multiple streams up. I used to pay for sunday ticket, but the NFL at large just rubs me the wrong way on the business side. Like with the NFL streams via their website that are blocked if you're considered inside the market even though you're paying for it. Idiotic IMO and so I voted with my feet.

2019 Rams training camp: August 1 practice recap

The Rams got in some quality work today at the Chargers’ place.

The Los Angeles Rams got in a joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers today. It was a great opportunity to make sure guys were going 100% while switching up some of the skill sets players were used to seeing across from them and different systems/line cadences. And with no fights or dustups, it meant things stayed focused on the field.

Injuries
Only one of note.

Rams Head Coach Sean McVay said WR Brandin Cooks had a bit of hamstring tightness so his day was cut short.

They did have a couple notable absences though:

Looks like Dakota Allen out again of practice for #Rams. Ogbonnia Okoronkwo also not dressed

— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) August 1, 2019
We’ll see if McVay expands on their absences.

#Rams offense 7 on 7 Red Zone (12 yard line) drill against #Chargers: four plays four TD passes from Jared Goff to Higbee, Gurley, Reynolds, Cooks

— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) August 1, 2019
Goff from his own 40 finds Higbee down the left sideline in stride for (what would’ve been) a huge gain, maybe a score. Precise execution and throw. #LARams

Second-team OL for the Rams

RT Bobby Evans
RG Jamil Demby
C Aaron Neary
LG Jeremiah Kolone
LT David Edwards

— Cameron DaSilva (@camdasilva) August 1, 2019
Interesting note there as Bobby Evans played left tackle at Oklahoma while David Edwards lined up at right tackle at Wisconsin. Clear example of Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach/Co-Offensive Coordinator Aaron Kromer cross-training guys.

Mike Thomas continues to make contested catches. Critical month ahead, battling for WR depth and SPTMs role. #LARams

Now Chandler Brewer is at LT with the second-team. Edwards at LG, Demby at C.

#Rams 1st team defensive front: Joseph-Day, Fowler, Matthews, Brockers, Donald

I think right now, just based on what I’ve seen, Joesph-Day is playing better than Greg Gaines. https://t.co/uvBR2XNsKh

Morgan Fox with a nice rep, flushing Cardale Jones from the pocket. Coverage was strong, too.

The Rams are back at it tomorrow with a regular training camp practice tomorrow. On Saturday, the Chargers come to our camp at UC Irvine for a joint practice. We close the weekend on Sunday with a regular training camp practice.

Then we head north. Wednesday and Thursday are joint practices with the Oakland Raiders at their training camp hub in Napa, California, ahead of the preseason opener against the Raiders.

I wouldn't annoit SJD the starter just yet. He's a 2nd yr player so he better look better than a rookie with one week under his belt. That said SJD didn't get much penetration. More than once he got stoned one on one. So he's still struggling to get off blocks. But it's still early for both SJD and Gaines. And as pointed out, Wade loves to rotate guys to keep them fresh. He didn't do that last year with Suh and it showed. SJD may look "better'" than Gaines now but he was inactive every game day last year. So we need to temper what we see so early in TC. The Rams are going to need both these guys to play at a high level beginning in Sept. Both will make the roster and both will get snaps.

I found it interesting that their second unit oline featured Demby at C, Evans at RG, and Edwards at LG. Demby looked good at C. The Rams know both Edwards and Evans can play OT but they need exposure at OG as well. This is what I mean about tempering what we see at this point. Demby isn't replacing Allen, but he's showing he's a viable backup at that position. Edwards and Evans need to show they can play inside if needed. When you only carry 8 active oline and only activate 7 on game day you need versatility with your backups.

What's important is how they look after the 2nd pre-season game. That will tell us more than a joint practice. Even the NFL Network announcers said that some of River's completions during the practice wouldn't have been if this were a real game. The pass rushers pull up allowing the QB that extra second or two to throw. That's why it's hard to say how good or how bad the front both oline and dline are. So what you must do is look at their technique. That's why I'm saying SJD still hasn't shown he can lower his pad level, still plays a bit too high, and needs to work on getting off blocks.

Noteboom looked very good with his movement on runs to the right. Both he and Allen have looked just fine so far. IMO Allen will be an upgrade to Sullivan. Allen is quicker with much better overall speed to get into the second level, which is something the center must do in this scheme. The same can be said with Noteboom, he appears more mobile and quicker than Saffold. Whit is just amazing. The dude just doesn't age. He might want to come back next year too. Whit is totally energized and a complete technician at his craft.

Morgan Fox ain't gonna push anyone to a backup role but it sounds like he's really got a shot at that 4th edge-rusher/OLB spot. Obo better be sweating right it now.

Just got home form Rams-Chargers scrimmage from Costa Mesa, and reading all the posts in this thread. Not a lot more for me to add as most everything in my notes have already been covered.

Some impressions of Chargers TC. Not as fan or kid friendly as Irvine. Chargers set up has 2 fields with bleacher stand on only one side. No stands in the end zones and no access at all to the far field. Of course that's where they put the Rams for warm-ups, and a lot of the 11 on 11 Ram offense vs Charger defense was on the far field . The only way to see was with strong binoclulars. I missed a lot because the action was so far away. Glad that others posted here what I missed.

Had punts with gunnar drills. One guy stood out to me . Nick Scott. Guy flat out gets after it with two defenders trying to slow him up before he can get downfield. Good luck with that, he beat them every time.

Gurley was full practice, was in on some plays but was only targeted a few times. Brown was mostly starting RB. after they ran position group exercises for the 1st hour they got into 7 on 7 and then 11 on11 without tackling. Teams looked pretty even with offenses getting the best of defenses.

We had Chargers offense vs Rams defense in front of stands, Far field 100 miles away was Rams off vs Charger defense, I couldn't see that far and no fan access to that field.

Rivers and his O are good. He picked apart defending LB's over the middle to TE's mostly. Rams have to figure how to defend that or its going to be a long season.

Starting Ram D is not bad, with good rush. 2nd team got tore up. Don't know what other folks are looking at but Jo-Day is a player and is a better NT than Gaines at this point, Day with the 1st, Gaines with the 2nd. A lot is going to change once the get some games in and coaches can look at tape vs other teams.

Things I think after 5 TC days and a Scrimage vs another team.

Rams offense is better than at this time last year. Goff is bigger and stronger and looks more confident.
I don't think there is anything wrong with Gurley. I've watched him run, catch the ball, make hard cuts. If he's hurting he's not showing it. The OL looks solid. Whitworth looks great. Noteboom and Allen stood up well against Chargers 1st team D. I have no ideal who they want as backup C. Neary, Demby, Hrynkwicz?

Rams DL looks very good. Must mention that they went with just 2 DT and 5 LB's several times today. Brockers, Donald, Fowler, Eubekam, Kiser, Littleton and Mathews. Brockers looks bigger and was getting off the line and penetrating. Mathews got a sack. Fowler got a sack. Jo-Day not losing out to Gaines any time soon.

Most everything else has already been coverd. Oh, Greg the Leg was nailing it from60+.

Back at Irvine tomorrow.

Weddle getting the sticker may have interesting trickle down effects. By all accounts, Littleton acquitted himself well calling the defense last year but taking the responsibility off him may allow him to play a fraction faster and with more ability to diagnose pre-snap than last year.
It also could be just the fact they have several of them set up for these practices and the veteran out on the field gets it? TBH i'm not certain but with all the player changes during these scrimmages there has to be multiple people with them or you just aren't getting play calls in.
