Rams Week 10 report card: Grading every position vs. Seahawks
By: Cameron DaSilva
Quarterback
It feels like we’re saying this every week, but Jared Goff was outstanding on Sunday. He completed 28 of 39 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns, posting a passer rating of 113.0. Brandin Cooks was his favorite target with 10 catches for 100 yards, but he mixed in players at every level, including two touchdowns to his tight ends. If Goff continues to play like this every week, the Rams will be in good shape.
Grade: A
Running back
Todd Gurley didn’t touch the ball as much as he typically does, getting just 16 carries and three receptions, but he was extremely efficient. He racked up 160 yards and a touchdown on those 19 touches, including a 20-yard reception and 17-yard run. Malcolm Brown spelled him for eight snaps and had a 10-yard catch, but this one was all about Gurley in the backfield. Had he gotten 20 carries, he would have approached 200 yards from scrimmage.
Grade: A
Wide receiver
Cooper Kupp’s injury is devastating for the Rams, but he and the team’s other wideouts were effective throughout the game. The trio combined for 227 yards on 19 catches with Brandin Cooks scoring on a 9-yard rush to give the Rams a 36-24 lead. They caught 19 of the 25 passes that came their way, good for a completion percentage of 76 percent. Replacing Kupp will be difficult, but the Rams have the depth to overcome his injury.
Grade: A
Tight end
This was one of the better games from the Rams’ tight ends this season. Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett combined for five catches, 40 yards and one touchdown each, the first time since 2013 that two Rams tight ends each caught a touchdown pass. Their roles should increase with Kupp out, but they’ll need to show they can produce like this consistently.
Grade: B+
Offensive line
Goff was sacked twice and hit five times, neither of which are huge numbers, but this wasn’t the best game from the offensive line’s standards. The Seahawks also had three tackles for loss and got decent penetration throughout the game.
Grade: B
Defensive line
The Rams’ defensive line was extremely disruptive in this one. Aaron Donald had 2.5 sacks, five quarterback hits and three tackles for loss, adding to the Rams’ total of four sacks, nine quarterback hits and five tackles for loss. Not all of those came from the defensive line, of course, but they were constantly in the backfield. The biggest issue was stopping the run with the Seahawks rushing for 273 yards, but all that can’t be pinned on the line.
Grade: B+
Inside linebacker
Both Cory Littleton and Mark Barron really struggled on Sunday. They were a big reason for Seattle’s success on the ground, showing poor gap discipline, the inability to get off blocks and a hesitancy to plug up running lanes. Littleton did have a tackle for loss and pass defensed, but it was hardly an impressive showing by him.
Grade: C-
Outside linebacker
Outside of Dante Fowler Jr.’s strip-sack and forced incompletion on the final drive, the outside linebackers were almost nowhere to be found. Samson Ebukam made one nice play at the line of scrimmage to stop Mike Davis, but he disappeared as a pass rusher. Matt Longacre allowed Russell Wilson to carry him for extra yardage on a scramble, and again, provided very little in the way of pressure.
Grade: C+
Cornerback
After getting torn to shreds by Drew Brees and the Saints, the cornerbacks really stepped up against the Seahawks. Russell Wilson was held to 176 yards on 26 attempts,
Marcus Peters was great in run support and Troy Hill was solid with the exception of a touchdown allowed. Nickell Robey-Coleman provided tight coverage in the slot and even Sam Shields contributed this week.
Grade: B+
Safety
John Johnson surprisingly played less than normal with Marqui Christian coming in for 16 snaps, but he and Lamarcus Joyner were good in coverage. Where they struggled a bit was against the run with Seattle gashing the Rams defense consistently.
Grade: B+
Special teams
Greg Zuerlein was perfect on all of his kicks, but Blake Countess was called for unnecessary roughness after a Rams punt and had a terrible kick return of just 19 yards to L.A.’s 14. Those two blunders are the primary reason for the group’s fairly low grade.
Grade: C
