Rams Week 13 report card: Grading every position vs. Lions
By: Cameron DaSilva
Quarterback
Jared Goff had one of his worst games of the season, completing just 17 of 33 passes for 201 yards. He did have a touchdown pass, but he also threw an interception and coughed up a fumble that was recovered by the Lions. He missed open receivers on several occasions and had a few other passes that could’ve been picked off. Goff looked rusty coming out of the bye.
Grade: C-
Running back
As bad as Goff was, Todd Gurley was just the opposite. He dominated the Lions with 165 yards on 26 total touches, scoring twice. He had his longest run of the season – a 36-yard gallop to put the game away – and continued to perform well as a blocker. Malcolm Brown left early with a shoulder injury and didn’t contribute much, leaving everything up to Gurley. Needless to say, he didn’t disappoint and showed no ill effects from the ankle injury.
Grade: A
Wide receiver
It was an unspectacular day from the receivers because of Goff’s struggles, totaling just 11 catches for 148 yards. Robert Woods led the way with five catches for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Brandin Cooks was close behind (four catches, 62 yards). Josh Reynolds was targeted five times but only caught two passes for 19 yards. Again, Goff didn’t give them much help at all.
Grade: B
Tight end
After a great game against the Chiefs, the tight ends were quiet on Sunday. Gerald Everett caught one of three passes that came his way for 7 yards, and Tyler Higbee had just two catches for 19 yards. Goff had Everett open a couple of times but overthrew him, so his stats could’ve been more impressive than they were.
Grade: C+
Offensive line
Goff was hit four times and sacked twice, so it’s not as if he was provided perfect protection. Rob Havenstein was also called for holding – though it was negated by a defensive penalty – and Austin Blythe was penalized for the first time all year, too. The running lanes were wide and plentiful for Gurley, but there were definitely lapses on the offensive line.
Grade: B-
Defensive line
Aaron Donald was unstoppable against Detroit in what was one of his best performances ever. The Lions couldn’t block him with double teams as he continually split them, which is how his forced fumble occurred. Ndamukong Suh was also impactful and disruptive despite being flagged twice on questionable calls, while Michael Brockers held tough at defensive end, as well.
Grade: A+
Inside linebacker
The Lions trailed most of the game so they didn’t run it as much as they could have, but their backs averaged 4 yards per carry on 25 attempts. LeGarrette Blount was shockingly productive with 61 yards on 16 carries, which is a great game for him, all things considered. Mark Barron missed several tackles, Cory Littleton was out of position in coverage and neither played particularly well. It might be time to give Ramik Wilson some time in place of Barron.
Grade: D
Outside linebacker
Dante Fowler Jr. produced his second sack with the Rams and made an impressive three tackles for loss, while also hitting Matthew Stafford once. Samson Ebukam recovered a fumble and had two tackles, but it was a far cry from his historic performance against the Chiefs two weeks ago.
Grade: B+
Cornerback
Welcome back, Aqib Talib. The Lions had no success throwing the ball before he exited in the second half due to a snap limit, helping the rest of the secondary immensely. Marcus Peters blanketed receivers and Troy Hill had a game-sealing interception in the end zone, so it was an all-around good day for the corners.
Grade: A-
Safety
Lamarcus Joyner has not had a good season on the franchise tag and although he didn’t make any glaring mistakes on Sunday, he wasn’t very impactful, either. He was out of position on a crossing route by Kenny Golladay, failing to recognize where Stafford was going with the ball. John Johnson led the team with 11 tackles so he was around the ball plenty, but he didn’t make any plays in the passing game, either.
Grade: B-
Special teams
Greg Zuerlein was a perfect 3-for-3, Johnny Hekker had a booming 55-yard punt and Pharoh Cooper’s 28-yard return showed he’s back to his old self. This was a good performance by the special teams unit.
Grade: A
