© Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports Oct 8, 2017; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron (5) against the Buffalo Bills at Paul Brown Stadium. It's fitting that all this happened on Halloween, because it's scary how
a trade between the NFL's two Ohio-based teams vanished. Like a bad jawbreaker candy, the more that comes off the surface, the worse it tastes. The newest lick indicates the Bengals might be the ones who fouled up the deal for quarterback AJ McCarron, not the Browns, as numerous prior reports indicated.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, the Browns held up their end of consummating the trade that would have landed them McCarron. It was the Bengals who erred.
Cabot tweeted that the Browns sent a signed document to the Bengals to sign and submit to the NFL, confirming the trade. Cincinnati, however, sent in a document signed by only one team.
This flips the blame from Cleveland to Cincinnati, though at this point it's safe to say both sides share in the inability to get the deal done in time.
It also calls into question the method for the NFL to get the information to validate the trades. With all the advances in technology, it seems like there is an easier way to finalize these deals.
