I was born in LA area, like you probably were. I learned to drive in snow over many years of chaining up over mountain passes and never wrecked once. Ijust know how freaked people get over a little bit of weather. Hell, Californians l lose their shyte when they get a little rain and see how many chain reaction accidents they can get in, because they don't understand the concept of following distance. Most city people react similarly all over the country, I guess.....
Bay area born but lived most of my life in Reno. Took my drivers test in the snow. And nothing is more annoying than some Cali fool moving here and not knowing how to drive in rain or snow.

Along the lines of things you never expected to hear in a lifetime,
"To ensure safety, we have decided to move the event to Detroit"
Would be near the top of the list!

Yup never had anything like it.

Our schools think a snow day mean set your boots outside before coming into the class room.

Okay I feel old saying this but...Was anybody here living on the East Coast for the Blizzard of '78?

At the time I was 8 years old and living with my Mom in Worcester Massachusetts. School was cancelled for a week. I remember it as being a total blast. Great fun in the snow, great sledding for weeks afterward. The wind made insane snowdrifts... our back door was completely encapsulated, and the snow almost came up to my second-story window. I'm sure for adults it was a nightmare, but for us kids it was a dream come true.

I was 12 at the time and remember it hitting upstate, NY here in Albany too. It was not as bad as I remember missing a few days of school, but playing a ton of hockey, however, I do remember how tough it was for adults to drive because they could not see over the snowbanks.

OK.. here is my story about the blizzard of 1977... I was a high school senior visiting a NY state university at Geneseo... upstate NY... about a half hour south of Rochester. I was driving alone, and following a friend who was driving a VW bug. The snow got so bad there were several times when I had to roll down my window just to see where I was, and many times I was on the wrong side of the road! Everyone had their emergency lights flashing, but I eventually lost sight of my friend and had to pull over. Soon, a car hit me from behind and pushed my car off the road. The lady that hit me lost her defrosters, but we eventually bummed a ride with a snow plow driver back to a tiny town called Holcomb NY, which doesn't even exist anymore. It took me 2 hours to get thru to my parents because the phones were so clogged, but they told me to call and get a room somewhere, and alert the gas station across the street to go tow my car. I got a room in town, but the gas station said that I was way down on the list but they would get to my car eventually. So I started walking up the hill towards the motel... it was about 2 miles away, but it was so cold I popped into a small grocery store to warm up. I eventually started walking up the hill again, when a station wagon with 3 ladies pulled up and asked me "what the hell are you doing out walking? I told them I was going to my motel, and they offered to give me a ride because they knew they needed to find shelter also.

We got to the reception area of this tiny motel, and there were several people already inside. I already had a room reserved, but there were no other rooms available, so the 3 ladies said "well, it looks like we are staying with you". (Gasp!). A family with 2 or 3 kids were also in that lobby and were also told there were no rooms available..., but the wife/mother started screaming hysterically and saying "I won't go back out there again"!! So a truck driver, who was also in the lobby, said he'd give up his room to the family, if he could stay with me and the 3 ladies. WTF!

Well, do you know how big a motel room is? It had 2 twin beds and that was about it. I was laying on the floor between the beds, 3 ladies in 1 bed and the truck driver in the other. The movie Roots was playing on TV. At one point the truck driver said he was cold, and one of the ladies said "I'll go sleep with him". Fuck me, was all I could think. Eventually, however, I fell asleep (thank God).

The next morning they were the first ones to leave and then my Dad popped in. I remember because I had to hide my cigarette from him after I opened the door -lol! We went down to the gas station to get my car but they had no idea where it was, and told me to go look across the street in a lot to see if it was there. We found it eventually and after a while they got it running, and then we drove home.

Quite an adventure for a 17-year old kid. Today, I actually live quite close to that area, but am getting ready to retire soon and am growing tired of the snow, wind, and dark days ahead. It can be very inconvenient.. coats, boots, driving, etc. The snow is beautiful at times, especially around Christmas, but January and February are pretty shitty. March is a welcome time but it seems to take forever for the warmer weather to get here.

Cheers all, and thanks for listening.

I was one of those California drivers when I moved to West Virginia 20 years ago.

I knew how to drive in Rain but I did not like driving in snow. And ice I don't even want to talk about.

I have gotten better but I live on a road that has a large incline and people would get stuck on it and there was no way around them so I had to park at the bottom of the incline.

Anyway I came back the next day and my windows were bashed in.

So now I leave right when it starts snowing so I don't get stuck at the bottom of the hill again.

My in laws live in Lake Shastina near Weed. They ask us to come for Thanksgiving almost every year. I'm like "Hell no! What if it snows?" I'm one of those Cali drivers who have no experience driving in snow. Give me 50 foot visibility fog over snow any day.

And don't get me wrong people here aren't some amazing drivers they just know the snow. Get some around here on an LA or Bay Area freeway and they're scared shitless.

We get snow quite often but if we get 6-10 inches it shuts down the entire state!

I have Allen and Diggs on my fantasy football team and I was worried with all that snow it was going to hurt their numbers so I made a few calls and next thing you know the game is going to be played in Detroit :)

20+ years ago I was commuting from Thousand Oaks to Mid-Wilshire in LA. The bad El Nino year of '98 was absurd. It rained multiple days for multiple weeks in a row for three months.

One morning as I'm heading out, already irritated that my morning routine of coffee and reading has been disrupted by the weather and need to add at least a half hour to my commute, I've only just gotten on the freeway in a light rain but it has been raining for an hour at least up to that point.

In my irritation at immediately getting stuck behind a dolt that can't drive on a wet highway, I goose the car and pass...until I notice up ahead that a Corvette has spun out and ended up ass-first up the embankment on the side of the road.

And decide to slow down.

Now they are saying they might not even be able to get to the airport as there is a travel ban in place. They canceled practice today and are having a zoom session instead. Crazy snow.

I was born roughly 9 months later lol.
