They have no choice. Too much dead money to move on. The Rams can move on after next season, if they want to.
Build the o-line, get a deep threat, and get McVay to up his game (which has been sorry and stale for two-seasons now). Do that, and we are in a good spot. Best case, things work out with Goff . Worst case, we have set a strong foundation for whoever the next guy is.
I would say there is anything from a decent-to-good chance that Goff can return to his old form. He has the talent and we have seen it before. I don't know where the old Goff went... but we have to find him because that's what we are paying for. The same Goff that went toe-to-toe vs. Mahomes and won in that famous 2018 shootout. The same Goff that torched Minnesota in 2018 with several throws into insanely tight windows, generating dark-horse MVP conversation until his game cooled-off later in the year. The same Goff that went on the road to New Orleans in the playoffs, out-dueled Brees, and led the Rams to a come from behind victory. That Goff was a very good QB, close to taking the next step to being among the great ones, all at a very young age. That's why we paid him. The guy we have now is a streaky mess - capable of great throws at times, but just as often a complete liability with turnovers. You can't win with that, and it's not what we're paying for. Right now, he's basically Jameis Winston, and there is a reason Winston isn't starting. Two years ago, I think all but a select few teams would have traded their QB for Goff. Today? I wager most teams would pass, especially with his contract. If he does not turn it around soon, much like Winston, he is done as a starter in this league. His next job will be as a backup that has the talent to step in and win games, but never to be trusted to lead a team full-time. Given his youth, I think teams would jump at him as a backup at backup money, but nothing more.
