I know they owe him a lot of money but this is a fair question imo. I think they shorten the leash and give him one more season, but they draft a guy early (2nd or 3rd). What you guys think?

Can't...They take an additional $30M cap hit on top of his existing $30M Cap hit if they try to get rid of him this offseason

After 21' they can. Actually save $1.7M on the cap, but still eat $30M in dead money.

The gamble has to be that this year does wonders to improve the quarteback for the future.

We have to hope that the adversity develops into dependability.

Of course. I'd draft a developmental backup if Wolford doesn't do well, but Goff's the best chance we have at winning.

Give Goff a legitimate deep threat and strengthen the OL (OC in particular) and give him 2021 to return to form. He earned it and his contract dictates it.

They have no choice. Too much dead money to move on. The Rams can move on after next season, if they want to.

Build the o-line, get a deep threat, and get McVay to up his game (which has been sorry and stale for two-seasons now). Do that, and we are in a good spot. Best case, things work out with Goff . Worst case, we have set a strong foundation for whoever the next guy is.

I would say there is anything from a decent-to-good chance that Goff can return to his old form. He has the talent and we have seen it before. I don't know where the old Goff went... but we have to find him because that's what we are paying for. The same Goff that went toe-to-toe vs. Mahomes and won in that famous 2018 shootout. The same Goff that torched Minnesota in 2018 with several throws into insanely tight windows, generating dark-horse MVP conversation until his game cooled-off later in the year. The same Goff that went on the road to New Orleans in the playoffs, out-dueled Brees, and led the Rams to a come from behind victory. That Goff was a very good QB, close to taking the next step to being among the great ones, all at a very young age. That's why we paid him. The guy we have now is a streaky mess - capable of great throws at times, but just as often a complete liability with turnovers. You can't win with that, and it's not what we're paying for. Right now, he's basically Jameis Winston, and there is a reason Winston isn't starting. Two years ago, I think all but a select few teams would have traded their QB for Goff. Today? I wager most teams would pass, especially with his contract. If he does not turn it around soon, much like Winston, he is done as a starter in this league. His next job will be as a backup that has the talent to step in and win games, but never to be trusted to lead a team full-time. Given his youth, I think teams would jump at him as a backup at backup money, but nothing more.

Looking at these cap numbers, makes perfect sense to keep him in 2021 and see if he sinks or swim. I'm still supportive of Goff, but my patience for him is waning thin with the feckless turnovers he's committed.

you guys that want to ditch Goff, where do we get his replacement?

With a .500 at worse record with McVay as coach, to get into decent draft country will take 2 firsts and 2 seconds at a minimum. Drafting in bottom half of first round wont get the job done, and its not like we don't have other needs

Too early to answer, IMO.

Let's say Wolford lights it up and the offense puts up 30 - 40 points vs. Arizona. Next, they decide to keep rolling with Wolford for whatever reason (the spark on offense, Goff injury slowly heals) and the offense continues to put up points all the way to a Championship.

Do you go back to Goff in 2021 or do you look to trade him? I think they look to trade him. Might not get what they want, but it's possible.

for 2021, Goff will absolutely be on the roster as his cap hit to trade/release would be $65M

His cap hit in 2022 is $34.5M and his dead money is $30M even so we'd save $4.5M against the cap if we let go of him, but still would be eating a massive $30M cap hit.

There is virtually no cap hit after 2022 as compared to 2021 and 2022.

so, unless Goff becomes irredeemable, he'll be our QB for the next year at least, maybe two unless he works out what's happened and turns it around in which we'll be hoping we can hold on to him longer.

Alas, 2020 has broken all patterns and I'm a pattern guy, so I'm completely lost.

Imo Goff isn't going anywhere. Get someone better at Center, drop Reynolds and Everett, get a burner type WR for Goff and find a good pass blocking RB that isn't injured every other week. If all that happens I think we see the 2017-18 Goff again.

I think if the Rams decide not to sign Floyd or JJ they should find a free agent center to help calm down the OL. I think Corbett and Edwards are good enough and will get better if there someone at center better than Blythe. If we resign Floyd or JJ then we should try to draft a center and hope he works out.

Something has to be done or else next year will look just like 2019-20 with a sputtering offense. Everyone in the division is improving so if we don't want to be back in the basement in a year or two Mcvay should probably address the OL this offseason. Just my opinion.

Of course they keep him. That's not in question IMO.

What is in question is do they need someone behind him who can insulate the team against continued regression. So Wolford is up this weekend to prove he can do that, and depending how that goes I think the team will go from there.

Led team to winning record every year.
2x Pro bowler.
Highest scoring offense over 2 years.
Youngest QB to win an NFC championship.
Rated 38 and then 32 best player in the NFL by his peers.

Has beaten Mahomes, Wilson, Murray, Brees, Rodgers, Brady and other top QB’s multiple times.

Goff is a Franchise QB and was paid for it.

You don’t trade a player like that when his numbers dip due to surrounding talent. He has zero pro bowl players around him and a subpar Oline.

You rebuild the surrounding talent.

I agree with this. Agreed with it last offseason in fact. My take was that hey you invested all this money in Goff so how about keep making that OL good enough to complement him. They did improve too just in-house but at this point once again Blythe has become a weak link.

So they need a Center at a minimum IMO. LT is looming too.

It does seem like OL needs to be upgraded.

It's hard for me to imagine anybody in their right mind choosing to jettison Goff, even if his contract was structured to make this less painful.

He has played well over the years and at times this season to earn the starting role next year. They should, however, put a much better structure in place to push him and be willing to get backups some time behind center when he starts the game in one of his funks. Just because he is QB1, doesn't mean he gets to take the whole game off when you could sit him down after the first quarter or halftime.

2022 is then decision time.
