Benny is a fan favorite and all, but ever year we draft a RB who shows promise and produces. Richardson, Mason and Stacy (left Pead out on purpose) were all good out of the gates and then never really seized the starting job for more than a few games and/or became good backups. $2.5M for Benny, or $700K for another 5th or 6th round RB? I have a feeling it'll end up being a lateral move when the dust settles.
I think Benny is a heck of a lot more than just a back up RB, which is what the other group was. He's our 3rd down back that we've been sadly missing for years and has stabilized the kick off returns, where we also had been struggling. (#4 last year)
I liken him to a Shane Vereen who signed a 3 year 12.5 mill deal with the Giants last year. Is he worth 4+ mill per year like Vereen? Probably not, but certainly worth the "extra" 900k to reserve his services for an additional year (especially in a year with surplus cap room)
And on a different topic, If it were only as easy as drafting a RB late in the draft, then why is Benny our #2/3 back despite not being drafted? And the majority of the backs that were drafted since his arrival have all flamed out and aren't on the team any longer?
I'm not looking to break the bank on the kid, but we could have secured his services for an additional 900k AND still negotiated a longer term deal that may have resulted in a lower annual/CAP number
