Bennie Skow and the Big 11

Love how Skowronek has played, and like a few of you, I'd love to see him in a tight end role, maybe bulk up a tiny bit, be an HB sort who can be a versatile chess piece.

That's my hope. I don't know how realistic it is, but that's my hope.

If he adds 10-15#, he fits the mold of a Jordan Reed/Gerald Everett TE in McVay offense. I think he's overachieving a bit in his current role due to injury issues, with a full compliment of WR he may not be getting the PT. Even at his current playing weight, he's a better blocker than Everett ever was and could be dynamic in a slot/TE hybrid type

Why make someone try to be something he's never been.. as opposed to maximizing what he already is?
He's a big WR who can block and make some plays as your 4th WR and be worked in regularly to 11 packages, especially to feature run and play-action?
Is he going to move past Blanton and Hopkins as a TE? And how about if Mundt comes back?

And.. yup.. he is dynamic enough at his current weight to make plays as he's shown on STs.

First of all, neither Hopkins or Blanton is a future player for this team, Higbee is nearing the end of his contract & McVay has run a 2 TE set,(even 3 in Washington). Everett never put it together, but with the drafting of Hopkins and Harris, they are clearly looking to fill that role and neither guy seems to be heading in that direction. Getting too hung up on terminology, as I've repeatedly referred to the role as a hybrid TE/slot (like Reed), and yes he did play that role in college. While not being labelled a tight end, the split ends in Fitzgerald's run heavy spread took on a significant blocking role.
I'm a huge fan of the kid, seeing I was throwing his name out there prior to the draft. And while he can fill a niche role as a 3/4/5 WR who plays ST, I can envision a more significant role in the hybrid spot

Wide receivers, in the Rams 11 personnel, take on a significant blocking role. Which is why he's absolutely perfect for that.

I like him!

When we're discussing the Rams and what they do and what he does? He's a WR. Everett was that hybrid type.. and was significantly thicker.. naturally carrying 20 pounds more.

I'll get back to my main point.. why would you move him out of doing something he's doing so well... as a rookie!! Why would you not keep developing him at that exact role?

The Rams will need to get Mundt back or draft another Mundt.. because Skow is not going to become that, magically. Mundt is 2 inches taller with 25lbs on him.

Meh... I think you're overthinking mismatches a bit. But if I get what you're saying .. if they view him as a WR, they're going to put a DB on him. How is that better for the run game? If they view him as more of a TE, he would be taking more of a run defender out of the picture - no?

I may very well be missing your logic. I don't pretend to be a big NFL technician. I'm just trying to picture how a team would match up and how then you can keep the opposition on their heels.

Yeah but you were throwing out a domer name. You don't really expect us to take you seriously on that.

Kidding of course.

I think we as fans get caught up on terms more than McSnead.

They seem to really look for mismatches rather than traditional positions.

If they view him as a WR.. the defense.. it'll be a DB. At his size, he can maul most DBs if he's blocking in the run game. He's also still got the mobility to get to them.
If they try to keep a LB in.. they' aren't likely to be able to cover him.
 
Fun seeing this thread play out some in today's game. B Skow making contributions.

I want to see more of Benny Skow to see how he progresses.

He has been a decent option as a 4th WRs as a rookie. He can block at the point of attack at 6'3" and 224 Lbs. He has made some catches with some drops IIRC on lower throws. I think he is better at catching the higher-level throws. He has lost his balance a couple of times catching in the flat. He has blocked well. Considering that McVay asks a lot out of WRs Benny Skow getting some PT shows confidence in his ability. Right now he is a big WR that can block. McVay will figure out what he wants to do with him in the future.

I’m with you on this one Kupped.

I like how Skow projects and what he offers. I would rather a big body like him catch some key 3rd down passes then someone like Jefferson. I see Jefferson as a WR4.

Not to crown him or anything but I like the projections.

Ben Skow had 27 snaps yesterday on offense, only 4 less than Jefferson.
 
I think Skow has a place on this roster and has shown several areas where he will continue to grow and contribute without asking him to become something else. He will undoubtedly gain a little more muscle with a pro program and age hopefully that doesn’t change what he already does well.

Loved the example showed yesterday where he came inside the tackle and then lead Sony through the hole.

I was just thinking this AM that his physique stuff would be the opposite. I think he gains a little mobility between 215-220 and can still knock the hell out of DBs in the run game and hold up against LBs.

Wasn't there a role in the late 90s where the Rams played a tight end somewhat behind the line and was used as a full back / tight end role.

Or am I thinking of Guman?
