This. Sean NEEDS to build in more quick outlet throws that have YAC ability. The Patriots have been racking up Super Bowls off of mostly 5-7 yard throws. Should be throwing to RBs at least 10 times a game IMO.
Thats exactly what I meant.

Well he is Aaron Rodgers, who instead of getting picked apart at Goffs age, was still riding pine behind Favre.

No further explanation needed...

Coach has some of us perplexed. I don't understand his inability to adjust his offensive/scheme to better compensate for the lousy O-Line blocking.

Yep, me included. Coach hasn't found a permanent answer to the good defenses seen at the end of last year.

The same games that folks trot out as examples of Goff struggling to grow as a passer...see first quote.

The hurry up offense seems to mostly be used in the 2 minute or desperate playing from behind situations. The 3 step drops and shotgun quick passing routes don't appear to be used enough or executed very well.

Kinda like that Air Raid system that Goff ran in college...sure brings him out of his shell when they go to it. Hmmmm...beginning his 3rd season as a starter in an under center, play-action, Pro Style, West Coast offense with a truly suspect Offensive line.

More no-huddle, especially when moving the ball. Give Goff the checks to run it at the line of scrimmage.

Even though we are simple ponds as fans, we are clearly looking in the same mirror @Ramlock

This is a huge factor, and let's be honest: Two years of hearing how Sean McVay is a genius on every media outlet, and then seeing our offensive turnaround in two years made us all drink the cool-aid. Yes he's an incredibly smart coach and offensive mind, but Matt Patritia the Belicheat disciple formulated a blueprint to shut down our offense in DET last year. 6 man fronts to take away the outside zone runs, quarters coverage to stop a lot of the in-breaking routes that are staples in this offense. 5 and 6 man rushes to make sure Goff is always under pressure because the variance in his play against pressure/versus clean pocket is the biggest in the league. He is like top 5-10 in the NFL from a clean pocket, but bottom 5-10 when facing pressure. Teams know all of these things now, and have combined them into a defensive plan that gives us a ton of trouble.

The question is why hasn't McVay changed his scheme more to help with the issues? Why are there not more short 5-8yard routes? Why are we still constantly trying to run 5 and 7 step drops? Can we change up our route combos, I still see non stop crossing routes and 15 yard in routes? It's tough to know who's more at fault, but it's a players league so I'll say our guys need to execute better.

There are a myriad of things that are happening. One, Goff has more responsibilities on offense; he's being forced to process faster. Two, the offensive line now can't be trusted; so he's reading faster and not allowing plays to develop. His clock is all over the place now. Add the fact Sean's offense is designed to throw for than just five yards at a time allowing for YAC scenarios; and now we are looking at a disaster.

I love the guy, never thought he was elite but I believe he has the capability. Right now, this whole forum wants Goff to be better, including myself. But where the difference is, some know it isn't all on him to right this ship. If his offensive line wasn't the second worst in the NFL; I guarantee you'd see better results. But now Goff, a pocket quarterback is being asked to do what Russell Wilson does; make beef stew out of lemons. (A miracle)

I wanted a quarterback, I got one. I don't want a game manager. You can win a superbowl with one, but they have to be practically infallible. Right now, we are depending on this constant pressure to make Goff into a diamond. If we are going to complete that process, we have to let him develop in this situation he's in. Because Bortles is not the answer. And for anyone thinks Bortles is a good idea; thank you for just joining us watching the NFL. We've been watching a lot longer, and know exactly what he's capable of. Behind this Offensive line; he will be ten times worse.

Don’t misunderstand me. I am in no way calling for Bortles. I’m still hopeful that Goff will improve. I understand that he is in a bad situation. He’s so close that just a missed read or a slightly more accurate pass a few times a game could make the difference between a win or a loss. I just hope to see signs of improvement soon because he will get bombarded by pass rushes for the rest of his career if he can’t cope, regardless of an improved Oline.

Russell Wilson does it every game. Aaron Rodgers is pretty good at it too and he has better pocket awareness and is more inclined to run if there is a lane and is decisive about it.

My point is that I’ve seen some posters here refer to Goff as elite. I don’t think he is at that point yet. Hopefully he will become that one day.

I think it was on McShays critique that he said OCs with basic schemes are stubborn to change. He said it was Chip Kelly’s downfall.

I was hoping for the Rams to hire Shanahan but for this reason. He is very versatile with his offenses. I was happy with the McVay hiring but I expected that working with Kyle that he would be more flexible and innovative. It’s necessary at this level. It’s very frustrating.

Well the coaches could make it a helluva lot easier to execute better by calling plays that exploit what the D is doing.

Goff is not seeing the open man. Locking on to a target is not good. Those couple of plays change the game. Goff is getting battered yes, but the best QBs make the best night decisions regardless. A few here refer to Goff as elite. He's good but I can't go that far.

Goff's not Warner and honestly, in today's NFL, the last thing I want is a guy who's gonna harken back to "Kill Jared" drills when it's not HS, but the NFL.

If McVay schemes this right, Goff will be putting up elite numbers again.

and yes, McVay has got to scheme quicker developing routes on pass plays with double A gap pressure or A gap stunts...

Well Brady doesn't. Manning didn't. Brees almost never does...

Yes, there are athletic young QBs...Mahomes, Wilson, Watson. But even now with the injury, there is speculation that his game is gonna change a bit now. Wilson has always used his movement more as a "scramble to buy time to throw" versus run, tho that happens, too.

Goff is elite. I'll keep saying it.

When the Denver D just swamped Brady in some of those games, he looked like crap... under threw guys, took bad sacks, threw INTs... the whole shebang. Why? Because they manned up TIGHT on those receivers and brought a TON of pressure.

Pocket QBs are always gonna struggle with that.

But HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS!!!

If that were sustainable, defenses would run the 6-1 against every pocket QB in the league and the pocket QB would be phased out. But it's not and they aren't. The 6-1 is pretty vulnerable and honestly, if we catch a few balls that beat that pressure...those 5-15 yard over the middle passes, it changes the entire nature of the game.

Heck the reason Kellen Winslow, Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski, Jason Whitten, Jordan Reed, George Kittle... have been and are so successful is that even today, it's hard as hell to stop an athletic pass catching TE.

The one upshot of all this is that McVay can't just keep pressing the same button and will have to diversify this offense, making it ultimately that much tougher to defend.

I understand why he did it and he got to the Super Bowl doing it so hard to fault him, but even he realizes that he got caught mashing that same button.

These next few weeks are going to be a transition and I hope we win both and go into the bye at 5-3 and with time to heal up and really get ready for that second half of the season with some answers, cuz we're gonna need them.

Against other teams, you're right the 6-1 might not be as effective. This defensive plan was created to stop us, flat out. It is meant to pressure the QB, while taking away outside zone runs, and inward breaking WR routes. Those are literally the staples of our offense.

So my question is WHAT IF McVay can't scheme people open like he used to? What if now moving forward, instead of having a schematic advantage in 80%-90% of games, its only 60%..or 50%? Does that mean we can't win anymore because we dont have a superior coaching advantage? We should still be able to compete and win, our players just need to take more responsibility for our success. That is the frustration with all the missed opportunities, our mistakes are now amplified because we have less chances to score throughout the course of a game. So one missed block, one missed pass hurts us waaaay more than it did the past few years. Our explosive plays are gone. With the quarters coverage everyone is playing the pass, and we are forced to throw underneath. I cant remember a big pass play since the week 1 bomb to Cooks.

I dunno. Games in less than an hour. We'll see if they worked it out.

what happened to the screen game? The OL is already letting the DL through, may as well run some screens. I know Ds are watching Gurley closely when we do run a screen, but try some to the TE to the opposite side as Gurley.
