Baker Mayfield is 'overrated as hell' according to Rex Ryan

Baker Mayfield is taking heat for the Cleveland Browns’ offensive struggles. After scoring just 13 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Mayfield was called out by former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan.

How bad did it get? Well, Ryan called Mayfield “overrated as hell.”

After casually dropping that line, Ryan is asked to explain why he thinks Mayfield is overrated. Here’s a list of all the things Ryan says Mayfield needs to fix:

• He’s a one-read guy who improvises when his first look isn’t there.
• He’s too slow to outrun guys when he takes off.
• He’s not getting the ball out in rhythm.
• He’s staring down guys.
• He’s not that accurate down the field.
• He didn’t get the ball out quick enough against the Rams.

That’s a long list, and while Ryan is perhaps exaggerating, Mayfield hasn’t been great to open the season. Through three games, Mayfield has thrown three touchdowns passes against five interceptions. He has seen his completion percentage drop from 63.8 percent last season to 56.9 in 2019. He hasn’t produced like people expected.

That doesn’t mean Mayfield is bound to play like this forever. He has plenty of talent, and looked like a star last season. There’s a scenario where Mayfield and the offense gets on track and he starts playing like a superstar talent again.

So, is Mayfield overrated? If Ryan what is talking about right now is Mayfield not living up to the expectations placed on him during the offseason, maybe. But if Ryan is suggesting Mayfield will continue to be this bad, that seems unlikely.

That’s not to dismiss Ryan’s criticisms. Mayfield hasn’t played like an All-Pro to open the season. It’s just as foolish to assume what Mayfield has done in a three-game sample will continue to happen, especially when Mayfield showed he could play better than this last year.

I think Baker is overrated when you look at him through the lens of hype we all saw during the off-season.

Is he overrated as a franchise NFL QB? Absolutely not. ( See Mitchell Trubisky, Cam Newton, Jameis Winston )

He set the rookie TD record last year and the talking heads were saying he would throw for 40 TD and 17 INT this year.

I still think he recovers to have a better year than last year overall but it won't be overnight.

Sunday night he didn't look great. That was C- Baker Mayfield. I think our loss to the Rams is on these three things...

1. Baker ( Missed a wide open Jarvis Landry on 3rd and goal at the end of the game)

Lol I'm probably the only guy who loves Rex Ryan. To be honest you're going to have a hard time convincing me otherwise about Baker. He reminds me a lot of Case Keenum at the moment. You can talk about his offensive line, that's completely fair.

But all Rex Ryan said is that he's overrated. Is he wrong? For a guy who has yet to do anything after three games, yet is loved by many; how is he not overrated? He never said he was a bad QB.

Rex resents anyone that is getting hype, unless he is their coach.

I like Mayfield as a player. His rookie year was great.

Maybe he’s off to a slow start, but... it’s 3 games. If he lasts as a starter, he’ll have a worse stretch at some point!

Overrated from day 1. Kyler Murray is the real deal believe it or not. (Id love to see these two switch teams just for comparisons sake. Murray would shred it in Cleveland.)

He's very Brett Favre-y. And I know one of those doofuses broadcasting our game said the same thing, but that's kinda what I saw from the beginning. Favre could be out of this world, and he could look like hot garbage (that 6 int game against us in the 2002 div playoffs is still epic). I suspect we'll see the same things from Baker over his career.

Basically he is slow on reads, confused by disguised coverages and tends to hold the ball instead of forcing the ball.
Goff has some of the same issues.
Every young QB does.
Of course he was accurate on the quick throws....those are predetermined throws, no reading.
Mayfield has talent and like all young QBs it will take time to see how he develops.
As an aside, Rex Ryan is a weirdo who largely got by with image and assistant coaches.

Goff's in his 4th year, excuses are beginning to wear thin. Don't misunderstand, he's adequate, but over paid IMO.

Yup, heard that too....problem is this team (at this point) is chaotic, eventually they'll get it figured out, then watch out.

Looks like the talent is there, but his head needs a lot of help. Hopefully that OL will keep him healthy enough to learn and see a better OL in the future.

You could say at one point Rex Ryan was overrated as hell. Doesn’t feel so good does it Rex. I think Mayfield will be fine with some experience.

Why on earth with three time outs 1min to play and 1st & Goal do you not hand the ball to Chubb at least once ? That would assist Mayfield. Anyway Browns problems -- :ROFLMAO:

i don't understand why we're defending Baker. He is overrated just how Jimmy G was. The Browns finished 7-8-1 but Baker kept rising up the off-season draft boards and QB rankings.

Guys should not be rated until the play a full NFL season. Anyone can get hot for a few games, especially without tape against you.

Not saying that he sucks, just that he was held in too high of a regard early on.

As usual our defense and the way they blanketed receivers and pressured him mercilessly in this game are overlooked.

I'm not sure why anyone would listen to Rex Ryan when it comes to passing. In his coaching career he seemed to be totally against throwing the ball.
