Baker Mayfield is 'overrated as hell' according to Rex Ryan

Baker Mayfield is taking heat for the Cleveland Browns’ offensive struggles. After scoring just 13 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Mayfield was called out by former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan.

How bad did it get? Well, Ryan called Mayfield “overrated as hell.”

After casually dropping that line, Ryan is asked to explain why he thinks Mayfield is overrated. Here’s a list of all the things Ryan says Mayfield needs to fix:

• He’s a one-read guy who improvises when his first look isn’t there.
• He’s too slow to outrun guys when he takes off.
• He’s not getting the ball out in rhythm.
• He’s staring down guys.
• He’s not that accurate down the field.
• He didn’t get the ball out quick enough against the Rams.

That’s a long list, and while Ryan is perhaps exaggerating, Mayfield hasn’t been great to open the season. Through three games, Mayfield has thrown three touchdowns passes against five interceptions. He has seen his completion percentage drop from 63.8 percent last season to 56.9 in 2019. He hasn’t produced like people expected.

That doesn’t mean Mayfield is bound to play like this forever. He has plenty of talent, and looked like a star last season. There’s a scenario where Mayfield and the offense gets on track and he starts playing like a superstar talent again.

So, is Mayfield overrated? If Ryan what is talking about right now is Mayfield not living up to the expectations placed on him during the offseason, maybe. But if Ryan is suggesting Mayfield will continue to be this bad, that seems unlikely.

That’s not to dismiss Ryan’s criticisms. Mayfield hasn’t played like an All-Pro to open the season. It’s just as foolish to assume what Mayfield has done in a three-game sample will continue to happen, especially when Mayfield showed he could play better than this last year.

I kind of agreed with the announcers' narrative during the game--when Mayfield just slung it after the snap, he was really accurate. I kept thinking one of those would get intercepted, but they were completions.

Mayfield proved that he can be a good NFL QB last season. He had Kitchens full attention and it kept him focused on his strengths. He has had a huge celebratory off season and his guru coach is now the Head Coach with more responsibility, so Mayfield isn't playing as well as last season. The potential is still there, but will he put in the work and commit to being his best? Who knows.


I pay no attention to Rex Ryan. He's the biggest blowhard I've heard. He's so full of crap. He's just angry because the Browns defeated the Jets.

Baker is a young QB. He'll get through this funk.

Basically he is slow on reads, confused by disguised coverages and tends to hold the ball instead of forcing the ball.
Goff has some of the same issues.
Every young QB does.
Of course he was accurate on the quick throws....those are predetermined throws, no reading.
Mayfield has talent and like all young QBs it will take time to see how he develops.
As an aside, Rex Ryan is a weirdo who largely got by with image and assistant coaches.

Mayfield didn't even have time to set his feet on many drop backs. He was under pressure most of the night.

I can't really fault him for his performance the other night. It's not just that his first read wasn't open ... neither was his second read, his third read, his check down, etc. If anything, you have to commend him for not getting frustrated and trying to force balls into coverage and ending up throwing INTs. About the only pass I saw forced into coverage was on the last play of the game, and at that point, he had no choice but to try to make something happen.

Before that game I had always liked Baker's ability and the way he played. After the game... I'll say what I did on our gameday thread: when he gets a good OL in front of him he's going to be a beast.

The Browns have pretty much everything in place other than OL.

Honestly, we should not give a flying fornication what the media says. Chrissy Simms also said Goff couldn't lead a team back from a deficit, and said it after Goff had led the Rams back from a 13-0 hole, on the road in a hostile environment, to win NFC Championship.

Lol I'm probably the only guy who loves Rex Ryan. To be honest you're going to have a hard time convincing me otherwise about Baker. He reminds me a lot of Case Keenum at the moment. You can talk about his offensive line, that's completely fair.

But all Rex Ryan said is that he's overrated. Is he wrong? For a guy who has yet to do anything after three games, yet is loved by many; how is he not overrated? He never said he was a bad QB.

I'll say this..."overrated" is not an accurate label. The kid has confidence...but he has much to learn too. It's early and he's learning.

Cleveland's been without a QB for a long time and Mayfield's the best prospect they've had...so expect him to get attention.

It's hard to really gauge Baker for a few reasons:
OL is awful
Kitchens is way over his head. The playcalling is awful.

He's got talent though but he's easy to game plan. Get pressure and he runs out the pocket to his right every time.
