Browns starting quarterback Josh McCown remains in concussion protocol Wednesday, with theBrowns preparing Johnny Manziel to start Sunday's game against Tennessee. Coach Mike Pettine is also getting another quarterback ready to play.

Pettine said that new backup quarterback Austin Davis will also get some first-team reps this week.

"He'll be prepared," the coach told reporters on Wednesday.

This is largely out of necessity. Manziel is not fully healthy, and is resting his elbow during individual periods of practice. He's saving his arm for team sessions. Meanwhile, the earliest that McCown can practice is Friday.

After a fast start against the Jets, Manziel mostly struggled against New York. He admitted that he felt a little bit of "tightness" during his outing, but said it wasn't too bad. It's an extremely rough start to the season for Cleveland's quarterback position with Davis having just joined the team last week.

The schedule makers seemed to do the Browns a favor by lining up the Jets, Titans, and Raiders in the first three weeks. It gives Cleveland a chance to quickly bounce back in their home opener this week. It also offers a chance to endure the most depressing start possible if they can't beat Marcus Mariota, the quarterback that many believed the Browns wanted to trade up for this offseason.

I don't think they're planning on him starting - the article says that McCown can't practice yet, and Manziel is limited in practice because he hurt his elbow (probably doing shots, though the article isn't clear).

However, if McCown isn't cleared, they are one Manziel injury or stretch of suckitude from the beginning of the Davis era in Cleveland.

I don't think that JFB has any business playing in the NFL, but I wouldn't go as far as saying that he is Tony Banks!:(
That's just hurtful!
Davis is miles better than either, though.;)

I liked Tony Banks at times. He had talent just didn't care much more than he did care. He did actually play some pretty good games.

I'm glad. Davis was a great teammate and a true professional in the locker room. I hope he does win that starting job. Going to Cleveland was the best thing to happen to him career wise, and he's certainly paid his dues.

He's better than Manziel and McClown so go for it AD! It'll be funny to see Bernie Kosar have to suck it up also.

Quarterback Austin Davis hasn’t appeared in a game since signing with the Browns, but that reportedly isn’t stopping the team from making sure he remains around for a while.

Field Yates of ESPN.com reports that Davis has signed a two-year contract extension less than a month after initially signing with the Browns as a free agent. Per Yates, it has a total value of $4.173 million with a $500,000 signing bonus and $600,000 in total guarantees.

Davis made eight starts for the Rams last season and threw for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns while completing 63.4 percent of his passes. The Rams cut him loose just before the start of the regular season and the Browns snapped him up a short time later.

At the time, it seemed Davis was in town to serve as insurance while Johnny Manziel dealt with elbow trouble. Davis stuck around after Manziel was healthy enough to return, however, and now it looks like he’ll be in Cleveland for a long while.
