Saw the Whole AZ-Redskin game....some AZ Cards only competition committee thoughts:

*Wow, the AZ offense doesn't look NFL level. Even Larry Fitz looked pretty bad...still tired from the funeral (lol).
*Bradford missed more throws in one game than he did in all of 2016 (ok, maybe exaggerating). But, he didn't
look like the guy from Week 1 in 2017. Really looked hesitant sometimes, and couldn't get the ball downfield and looked pretty baaaaaad when he tried... (I believe he is an accurate thrower, so I was hugely surprise at how he looked).
* O line didn't look that bad to me. THey have some decent players, but they look avg, or so. Not as bad as a
few posters had written last week on another Ram site.
* The offense looked like the Rams in 2015 with Case and Foles....just completing an 8 yarder was challenge.
*Switching that great Defense to a 4-3 and zone scheme looked bad the first half....putting Patrick Peterson off the ball in zone mostly didn't seem to suit them so well. They settled down in the 2nd half, but never looked like last year.
* AZ has a 4-3 scheme now; Chandler Jones at DE, not OLB now....destroyed Kevin Greene when he did that, but Jones some great inside gap plays on run downs, and made great plays. He looks heavier (am i right?). Not so explosive.
*AZ's defense played well when they were down 21-0 in the 2nd half. BUt, they don't look like the same defense.
Maybe thinking too much...wonder if they can be top 8 again.
*Still need a 2nd corner.
*Defense looks unsettled, maybe a bit disorganized still.

So, that's how I see it....they don't look like they can challenge the Rams now.

I am sure I am wrong about some of these comments...please chime in.

Thanks for the scouting report. I’ll try to watch the condensed game on Gamepass. Maybe I can chime in.

The play calling was terrible too.
Way too much force feeding of Johnson.
The passes to Johnson were not creative.
Mostly run receivers off and his slide out of the backfield for a pass.
The game plan seemed to be feed Johnson and hope he breaks one.
No rhythm on O at all.
I would expect some progression from them as NFL teams are usually not as bad as they look in an off week (Detroit) but I don't see how Arizona can beat the Rams unless something strange happens (Rams turn it over 5 times).

Johnson is so overrated. He had one good season. One. And people put him in the same sentence as Gurley and Bell. Glad he looked bad and hope he continues to do so. Hope we smash then like we did last yr, all out domination. Can't wait.

Johnson is the real deal, imo.

But a RB can’t do it alone. See Sanders, Barry; Jackson, Steven)

Don't sleep on the Cards. It was the first game of the season. Rust, new scheme and maybe just a bad game for them. Who knows.

McVay will have these guys ready to go - "trap game" because we're coming off a late Monday game, the Cardinals got embarrassed and will be playing hard, etc.

But we are going to destroy them. And Kroenke was at least a part of the team during the period of time that Sam Bradford stole money from this organization - so I hope he goes to McVay and tells him not to stop.

I expect their OL to be better as a run unit than in the pass, and that's going to cause them probs all year with Bradford back there. He's a pu$$y IMO. And if that ends up being the case they're going to have a rough time vs the Rams' defense.

Way to play the Rams' defense is to mash the ball and overpower/wear them down. Easier said than done, obviously, but if I'm an OC that is my plan when I face them. When you couple that with the Rams' offense, it's just a nasty combination.

I have to think even though it's a division game the Cards are gonna be on the receiving end of a can of whoopass.

Hell even Gurley had a down year when we were running a high school offense. The scheme and players sucked ass! So think Johnson can be good but he doesnt have supporting cast anymore. He's still young too. Glad their QB siituation wil be f'd with Rosen starting tbis game. We win by at least 20!

To add to the great scouting report from @SteveBrown

I didn't know all the changes that they are going through. Could take a bit of time to go to the 4-3. No QA Shipley at OC so I guess it's third rounder Mason Cole. Rookie will have his hands full. Lot's of changes in Arizona. It looks like a rebuild with a few stars remaining. Division game so expect they will be up but, they don't have the guns any more to stay with the Rams.

OFFENSE
In a perfect world for Arizona, Bradford starts all 16 regular-season games and is able to rely on a heavy rushing attack led by David Johnson, who rushed for 1,239 yards two seasons ago and led the NFL with 20 touchdowns and 2,118 total yards from scrimmage. The problem with that, though, is that Johnson has suffered significant injuries in each of the last two games he has played, and Bradford has started all 16 games in a season just twice -- the last time coming six years and four teams ago, in 2012.

Wilks and new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy will be tasked with trying to improve a unit that finished last season ranked 24th in third-down percentage, 25th in scoring and 30th in touchdowns scored in the red zone. They’ll have to do it despite losing 11 players who saw significant time, each of whom was either a full- or part-time starter, including three running backs, three pass catchers and three linemen.

The rebuild starts up front, where Arizona added Justin Pugh from the Giants to man right guard and Andre Smith from the Bengals to handle right tackle. Center A.Q. Shipley and left guard Mike Iupati both return, and if young left tackle D.J. Humphries can return to form from a serious knee injury, the O-line should be improved. There were still holes to fill, however, which explained why the Cardinals used five of their six draft picks on the offensive side of the ball.

In addition to Rosen, whom they selected 10th overall after flipping a third- and fifth-round pick to the Raiders to move up five spots, they snagged a top-flight receiver in Texas A&M’s Christian Kirk, an NFL-ready interior lineman in Mason Cole from Michigan and an intriguing, record-setting running back in Fordham’s Chase Edmonds, who will be a nice change-of-pace weapon behind Johnson.

Star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald returns for a 15th season as the face of the franchise, but he turns 35 in the fall and can’t play forever. He might be persuaded to stick around beyond 2018, however, should Bradford be able to stay healthy or, in a more likely scenario, should Rosen move into the starting quarterback role and prove why most talent evaluators contend he was the best pure-passing prospect in the 2018 draft class.

DEFENSE
PatrickPeterson_2016_325.jpg
The strength of the Cardinals has been this group, which joined the Broncos and Ravens as the only defense to finish with a top-10 ranking in each of the past three years. It just missed out last season on finishing with its third straight top-five ranking, finishing sixth overall. The key questions: Can the Cardinals maintain their level of excellence on D despite switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme? And how much will they miss playmakers like safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Tyvon Branch and fellow veterans such as linebacker Karlos Dansby and cornerback Tramon Williams?

There’s still a lot to like about the Cardinals’ defense, however, especially when it comes to cornerback and defensive end. There, Arizona has two of the best in the league in Patrick Peterson, the seven-time Pro Bowl performer and three-time All-Pro, and Chandler Jones, who set a franchise record and led the NFL with 17 sacks last season and whose 40.5 sacks since the start of the 2015 season are the most in the NFL during that span. The concern is about who is playing on the other side of the two stars. The Cardinals haven’t been able to find a long-term solution at corner opposite Peterson. Arizona signed a slew of corners in the offseason, and between that group and third-year pro Brandon Williams, it figures to be an open competition for the job. On the edge, Markus Golden, who led the club with 12.5 sacks in 2016, is returning from a torn ACL. There isn’t reliable depth at end if Golden can’t make a full comeback.

At linebacker, Josh Bynes played well enough in reserve to earn a contract extension and a promise by Wilks to man the middle of the unit. There is youth and exuberance to the left and right of him in Deone Bucannon and Haason Reddick, but all three will have to shine and play above expectations for this group to truly excel.

There are also some questions up front and on the back end of the defense. Veteran free safety Antoine Bethea will be 34 when the season begins, and as accountable as he has been during his career, he’s coming off a torn pectoral and isn’t getting any younger. Second-year man Budda Baker has off-the-charts talent, but he has only a handful of games as a starting strong safety in the NFL, and at 5'10" and 195 pounds, he’s smallish for the position. And then there’s defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, who looked like a steal when the Cardinals selected him late in the first round of the 2016 draft. He has yet to play up to par, and there have been concerns about his passion for the game, which likely makes this season a make-or-break situation for the former Ole Miss star.

SPECIALISTS
When the Cardinals signed 35-year-old punter Andy Lee last September to join then-42-year-old kicker Phil Dawson, Dawson made a joke about a fictitious retirement home, saying, “I think Sunset Acres should sponsor the special teams unit.” Dawson is now 43 and Lee turns 36 in August, but they’re both back as the senior leaders of this group. Dawson tied a career high last season with 32 field goals, but he also tied a career high with eight misses. Lee led the NFL during the second half of last season in punts downed inside the 20, but he was average for the first part of the year.

The coverage and return units have good speed and tenacity, but where the Cardinals really should see a bump in performance is with their two return specialists, second-year pro T.J. Logan on kickoffs and the rookie Kirk on punts. Kirk had six returns for touchdowns in college, and Logan had both jobs nailed down coming out of training camp last year until fracturing his wrist in the preseason opener.

FINAL ANALYSIS
Cardinals.
A healthy Bradford might be enough to make even the most skeptical critics rethink their conclusions about the Cardinals, but history isn’t on Bradford’s side, and with the departures of so many key players across the board, it’s difficult to believe this is a credible playoff team. If Arizona’s defense can keep the team in games and Johnson once again threatens 1,000 yards as both a rusher and a pass catcher, then maybe there’s a chance of a winning record. The wild card could be Rosen. If the rookie quarterback gets thrust into the spotlight early, a lot of things could change.

Prediction: 4th in NFC West

they still have a good defense, I don't think that first game is any indication of how well they can play. Unfortunately for the Cards their oline is weak. They have no chance at stopping our Dline. The pressure we put on their QBs will be amazing. I know you guys noticed how much holding the Raiders needed to do and they have one of the best center/guards combo in the NFL. Their Oline has no chance :mrburnsevil:

Their defense was great last year. I think the are adjusting big time to this new 4-3. Chandler Jones is facing mostly always OTs in the run game, not TEs---big difference. He didn't look that good against the run to me. Deonne Buchannon will be better in this defense, when he gets acclimated. DId he get hurt? No, that was the Atlanta ILBer, right? I think this game will be a 24-16 type of game. Arizona was humiliated last week---NFL teams always fight back hard the next week. Their offense was embarrassed.

They didn't look coordinated at all in the passing game. I am sure it will get better.

I'm really curious to see if Blythe keeps it up another game and how the Oline handles a superior pass rush to what we experienced with the Raiders. I can't tell it the line played that good or if the Raiders Dline was that bad. Truth is prob somewhere in the middle.

YES, the Rams did well against 2 pro bowl level interior guys, and the third is a B+ guard. Donald did have a sack, but it was called back for roughting...they did well against the run, mostly...

And Westbrooks took 2 good snaps at NT in the late 3rd I think it was.....coming off the bench, he is good.

Sorry Sanders & Jackson did it alone! I don't see Johnson like those two and I would not be shocked to see him miss time during the season.

Did what alone? Certainly not win.

Barry is my all time favorite non Ram ever but as great as he was - and he was - he played on very few teams that would be considered contenders. We all know SJ39 was a grown man out there but the Rams lost their asses off with him.
