People don't hate us, but they don't want us to be successful either. But it's not hate IMO.
Take the no call in the NFCCG - back in 2010 NFCCG, the NFL apologized to the Vikings for missed calls, else they would have beaten the Saints.
Even when the Patriots have done everything they've done...
No situation came close to the vitriol over the no call - which is completely nonsensical because after the no call, the Saints had the lead. Then they had OT. No NFL teams fan base ever tried to sue the NFL for the Patriots cheating.
It came down to the general public having little to no rooting interest in us. Almost like a apathetic feel toward us, whereas Brees was always easy to root for. This permeates through the media.
Because of this apathy, fans/media will almost always root for the other team. Hence almost every media member focusing on the no call instead of the fact that they allowed us to tie the game, then had the ball first in OT.
It's certainly a product of our irrelevance in STL.
And now we defy the natural order of treating first round picks like unicorns, which has another host of people rooting against us who want draft picks to continue to be overvalued.
I agree with all, but one point which needs correcting.
A fan did sue the NFL and it even got to court. The lawyers for the NFL argued that the fan wasn't entitled to a "fair contest" with all the legal ramifications of such including certain anti-trust benefits and instead argued that the NFL was "entertainment" and as such, fans are ONLY entitled to a seat to watch the entertainment.
This may be a legal distinction, but lucky for the NFL not many made a stink at the time and it inoculates them from when the NFL is finally found out to be fixing the SB.
Am I gonna complain if we win this SB? Heck no. I mean we've seen since SB36 that they go with the story. Well... we're the story right now.
But if I want pure contests, I can watch baseball, basketball or the Olympics. all sorts of imperfections there as well, but cheaters are stripped of titles and cheating players aren't rewarded...although baseball came very close to letting them cheat wrt the steroid scandal. Notice none of these guys from that era are getting sniffs for the HoF, for example.
Still, football is fun, most of the games especially in the early season are pure football and it's entertaining. Sad it's not a full sport, but we'd know it was because after the cheating, a full and open investigation would have been done and then the Pats would have been stripped. They weren't. That's how that goes.
