Gaines was a good run stuffer in college. He had some pass rush ability too, but mostly was drafted as a nose. I was excited to see him picked and last year really felt they should have given him more snaps at nose than SJD to further his development.
Yeah I hear that! I fully expected to see a lot more Gaines last year. I figured maybe they kinda redshirted him or didn't see anything promising? I hope I'm looking to far into it tbh. We going to find out for sure in the next 3 and a half weeks though! lol

He didn't fail his physical, so it's probably not career threatening.

As I said before, if he had COVID and he may not know as some folks show now or such minor symptoms as to be unaware... he could have a case of myocarditis... which is serious, but treatable. Just takes time for the anti-inflammatories to work.

And if he has to go on steroids for it, there are procedures for that so as to not get a performance enhancing substance ban.

What we do know is that by putting him on the NFI as opposed to coming to an injury settlement, that it's not so serious that they don't think he can play.

The idea that he passed a physical and then they discovered it lends itself well to it being a case of myocarditis although there are others which may crop up which just require a med regimen to be in place.

But yeah, if he needed surgery or this was career threatening, unless there were cap issues with coming to an injury settlement, then we can deduce that he's gonna play for us at some point this year unless his heart doesn't respond to treatment.

(Googling myocarditis) Always some new bastard medical condition I've never heard of! lol

Yeah I'm sure he will, just disappointed he's not with us from the start of the season. I'm surprised haven't heard more of a accurate type of time table or period of evaluation as comes with most players issues.

I really picture him doing wonders for our Run D, praying Gaines is ready to man up!

For those that didn't look it up, it's a swelling of the muscles of the heart.

It's a side effect of COVID as well as having plenty of other causes and wrt COVID, one can get the side effects even if the virus' direct effects were minimal or even unnoticeable.

There have been good studies coming out that for folks who had little to no issues and are verified to have had COVID, something like 33% have been diagnosed with myocarditis and more with lingering neurological issues.

Not trying to get into that here, but wrt myocarditis, it does fit:

It's not something that would be found in a physical, but could be found or realized later

It's curable in a short time frame presuming no complications

Once addressed, there should be no lingering issues

If any of those weren't the deal (whether it's myocarditis or something else), it's very likely the Rams would just come to an injury settlement and move on.

So, much like Terrell Lewis' knee issue, it's good news that he's expected to return.

First let me say I think Robinson is a perfect fit for us, is only 25 and will make our dline one of the best in the league.

But at this point I think we really really need to question the thoroughness of the physical we gave him. All off-season we kept hearing across the league, due to covid restrictions its extremely hard to get players into buildings for physicals. It's not too farfetched to think the physical could have been different this year with all the covid precautions.

To me, the probability he was perfectly fine and developed this cardiovascular issue AFTER we signed him is a lot less likely than him having the issue prior to being signed. My guess is someone on our medical team or player personnel team cut some corners and missed it, OR we saw a red flag but due to his age decided to take a chance on a good player because we know we need to defend the run better.

Either way IMO its hard not to put this on our medical staff/front office. For how much money he's getting paid and to "discover" this issue so quickly into camp seems so fishy to me. I mean come on how do we miss a cardiovascular condition? Hope he gets back quickly but what if he misses the entire season??

Actually, as I understand it, the NFI designation after the season begins only requires him to miss three weeks.
They put him on the NfI prior to the season starting though. That tweet was published before the roster deadline.

well, as we all know, being very good in college doesn’t always translate to the NFL. One theory with Gaines could be he dominated with power in college, but the NFL has bigger stronger Olinemen for the most part.

If A’Shawn has myocarditis it’s possible he got it from CoVid and it isn’t congenital.

There is a certain invasive plant called an Ailanthus, or tree of heaven. It resembles a Sumac but gets taller. It also has a distinct scent. Some say like peanut butter. If a person were to be cutting and/or burning ailanthus and get any open cuts or abrasions in the process, the smoke or moisture from the under bark can get into the bloodstream and cause myocarditis. Enough of a dose can kill or a person can be hospitalized. It can take weeks to overcome.

There were no OTA’s so times were different after the signing. You don’t even know the issue. Pinning it on anyone is a little much right now.

money?

What would happen to the cap if the rams cut Robinson? Because imo 6 weeks is to long to be missing time with a non-football injury especially when the rams have home grown players to resign.

laughing about Gaines play is sort of funny.

I do know Gaines is an upgrade over Short. He was also a 4th rd pick at a postion of need. There was a reason for the Robinson signing.

Wade playing both Gaines & Short for 2 plays in a row might have cost The Rams from going to the playoffs? I think he plays off Morgan Fox well, but can only go off the end of 2020.
He looks like he changed his body frame a little bit this year.

sort of funny as I was next to him on the corral last training camp while he was talking with friends.

My guess is a season of growth and having a new DC will only provide him with more experience. He had still never known what it is to be a NFL player from my take on being a fly in a open space.

Well, yes, he could have passed a physical and have it picked up later in a COVID screen which necessitated further testing. It also requires an MRI of the heart to find and that’s not likely to be done if an ECG is normal.

discovering the myocarditis is fairly recent and studies are finding correlations in trials. There was also a kerfuffle about how much this is an issue due to Penn State misquoting the numbers. There aren’t tests for myocarditis being conducted as part of a COVID clearance protocol

I don’t even know if he had it, but it fits as does the return timeline. Unlike Terrell Lewis expecting a 3 wk return, the timeline is 6 weeks which sounds right for an elite athlete in good health. An average person would need 3-6 months of no strenuous activity.

whatever it is, I hope he comes back stronger than ever.

This most unusual year has called for some most unusual arrangements, and here’s another one—a team and player creating their version of the COVID-19 opt-out.

Here’s the background: ex-Lions defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson signed with the Rams back in March, doing a two-year deal worth a total of $17 million. And some four months later, he’d come to the conclusion he’d be opting out of the first year of that deal. But deep down, while he knew what he had to do, he didn’t want to give up on the 2020 campaign .

So last month, before the opt-out deadline, Robinson’s agent Sean Kiernan pitched a solution that would bridge the gaps to Rams COO Kevin Demoff, GM Les Snead and lead negotiator Tony Pastoors. Robinson qualified for the NFL’s medical opt-out—which meant he’d get $350,000 to sit out the season, and his contract would toll (he’d keep his $6 million signing bonus, but his $3 million base for this year, and $8 million for next year would push to 2021 and ’22).

Kiernan’s idea was to create a virtual opt-out, which the agent and Pastoors then worked on just ahead of the opt-out deadline of Aug. 6. Over about a day, they crafted a solution.

• Robinson agreed to go on the non-football injury list, and lower his base salary to $500,000, which represented a $150,000 uptick on what he would’ve made as an opt-out.

• Being on NFI meant the earliest Robinson could come back would be Week 7. And with the Rams’ bye in Week 9, realistically, Week 10 would likely be the earliest he’d return.

• If Robinson were to come off NFI, and make it on to the 53-man roster, his base would increase to $1 million, and that would be paid out on a prorated basis (meaning his game checks would reflect a $1 million base, starting with his activation, rather than a $500,000 base).

• Robinson would also get $125,000 roster bonuses for every game he was on the 48-man gameday roster. Over a 16-game schedule (which is obviously off the table, because he’s on NFI), the $125,000 roster bonuses, plus $1 million base add to $3 million, the original total.

• The Rams also guaranteed Robinson’s $3 million salary for 2021 for injury, and it vests and becomes fully guaranteed next March, meaning the team will have to make a decision early on whether it’s keeping him or not in 2021.

Ultimately, the Rams are paying an extra $150,000 to give Robinson a chance to play, and they get the contract they agreed to in March over the two years to follow this one. Robinson, in turn, gets the extra money and a shot to play this year (with a bump in pay if he can), but knows he’s protected beyond this year if things don’t work out between now and the end of the season—he’d still, obviously, need medical clearance to play.

The last piece was deciding when to execute the contract adjustment. That happened this week, with the sides waiting to push the button in case anything unforeseen happened in America that would change circumstances on them.

And now, it’s done—a creative solution found in, again, a most unusual time

This is good. It'll allow us to roll over all that unused cap space or use it for Kupp/Ramsey extensions.

Wow, interesting. This is definitely better news than him just being injured or major medical problem at least. Gives us flexibility for other contracts.

That’s excellent news. I’m so glad that it’s a COVID opt and not injury related.

OK - I have to admit that I am a little (Maybe, A LOT!) slow but after reading all that information I am still a little (Maybe, A LOT!) confused! So, After reading all the great comments, This IS apparently really good news?! And, IF, I read this correctly, There is a Decent Chance that Robinson could still play this season?! IF, This is True and the Rams Defense could really get him AND Terrell Lewis back sometime this season before the Rams begin their PLAYOFF/
SUPERBOWL RUN that would be AWESOME!!!

im glad they crafted this as a hybrid opt out. And I’m glad it wasn’t in reference to an injury but was prophylactic.
