How many years since we had a good debate over which open receiver our qb should have thrown to?

McVay often talks about the timing an rhythm of the play this is an example of that. On the "missed Watkins TD" video clip it seems pretty clear that Kupp was the primary read in the progression since that was such a quick throw. Simply put Kupp was open and Goff hit him for a very nice gain. QB's in the NFL are taught to get the ball out quick because pass rushes are so dangerous.

Here you guys go. Watkins WIDE OPEN.

The safety was dropping to his spot as a single-high. If Goff had looked for Watkins, he would have moved back over the top of Watkins. Maybe he isn't able to recover. But if Goff is looking at Watkins, maybe Scandrick takes outside leverage and sticks with him. That would change the play entirely. All we know is that the defense reacted to what Goff did. We don't know how they would have reacted if things were different. We also know the outcome of the play was a 29-yard completion, so I'm not bothered by it.

Dallas was giving a pre-snap look with the safety over the top of Watkins and it influenced Goff's read I think, where he went through and found his guy quickly then made the throw.

This is where Jared will grow to be better and more dangerous, where he might note that safety's repositioning at the snap and adjust his read/make the throw for the bigger play. We have a QB who is still learning, but given that he is playing lights out.

Yeah, something I've learned finally as a fan all these years: who knows where Watkins was in Goff's reads. It's probably a mess up if Watkins is somewhere early in his reads for the play but what if Watkins was down the line in reads?

Minor quibble: Had that been a better pass to Higbee, perhaps that could have been a touchdown, he had his man beat. The pass seemed low and behind him.
