I don't know where people get the idea that Whitworth is done from. I thought he played great this season. He took a step back from last year, and in particular took more penalties, but I am not sure how much of that is even attributable to age vs playing next to a new LG every few weeks (and often a below average and inexperienced one at that) instead of a Pro Bowl vet like Saffold who had continuity with Whit. Big Whit had to cover for a lot this year. He is still playing at a high level in my opinion - easily in the top half of LTs in the NFL - and those cost money. I do think his contract ought to be for less this time around. He isn't quite the same player as when he arrived here. But those thinking that we can get him on the cheap are dreaming. I expect many teams will want his service on a short term deal if and when he hits the open market, and that many will be willing to pay handsomely for it.
I agree but I think Whit likes this Team so much that if he doesnt come back that he will hang em up. I dont look for him to be dirt cheap but I have a feeling he will take a discount for this team. Well that's what I'm hoping for anyway lol

Whitworth is always welcome, seems like he's the only one who can take care of himself pretty well and I have yet to see Goff get blindsided protecting his rear.

hope he comes back for one more season, Notboom might not be ready till midseason

I hope Noteboom never plays at guard ever again, that'll be forcing a square peg in a round hole at this point.

Viewing Noteboom strictly as a tackle. He was being groomed to take over for Wit but I'm guessing he won't be ready till the middle of the season at best. That makes signing Wit a must in my opinion.

Poor O-line play at other positions can make the other O-linemen look suspect. Certainly Whit is not what he used to be but the idea that he played poorly just isn't right. He's still a very good tackle and I'd welcome him back if he doesn't break the bank.

Well said.
Don’t see a better option at this point.

We have no clear path to replace him. Noteboom was Plan A, but there isn’t a Plan B except to likely pay a lot for another player in free agency or see the oline go further downhill. Resigning him is a good answer for both Whitworth and the Rams.
Keep in mind also that he could have other offers.

Yep.
Hardly an ideal situation.

Whit and his leadership is integral to not only our oline but our team as a whole.

I would hope that we plan to bring him back. Continue mentoring. Continuing being the Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for our team.

Goff and Whit have a close relationship. If Goff and other players can continue to get the mentorship from big Whit we certainly try to bring him back.

Like many starry eyed fans who want to see players turn playing careers into coaching careers. It ain't likely to happen. Weddle and Whit both are family guys and aren't about to go retirement and give up time with their kids to be even more busy.

I don't envision either guy hitting retirement and saying let's coach right now!

I don't get it either. He was easily our best OL. I would love to have him back.

1 year deal for 9M with incentives for games started, Pro Bowl and Playoff escalators.
I'd ask for his input on players at the Sr Bowl and combine for what traits to look for and to possibly help hand pick a replacement to groom with Noteboom's status in the air. Really would try to leverage his knowledge of the game for the young guys going forward.

I for one actually think it is an ideal situation. Whoever said Whitworth was never the number one situation either, it’s always been an assumption that Andrew Whitworth was just going to retire after his contract was up. He’s been a solid Ram and an excellent free-agent signing.
Now that note boom is heard it’s a perfect ending, with Whitworth still being that veteran leader and mentor to young lineman

I'm all for it.

With Noteboom uncertain for the start of the year, it only makes sense to bring him back. He's still a quality starter. And in the best case scenario where Noteboom is healthy and earns the LT job, Whit seems like the type of guy who would slide inside to OG. He played OG at points in his career and was just as great there.

I think if Big Whit plays next season it will only be if he can reunite with the Rams.

Noteboom is recovering from a major injury and will likely start next year on the PUP list. He has been disappointing in his play before his injury and has given no indication he can play LT at a high level.
All the chips in that basket is foolish.
Whitworth is the best option but his play has fallen off a bit. He would have to come back at a reduced rate for me to be interested. Otherwise, another old vet LT like Penn will cost $2M for the year. Is there that much of a difference between a C LT and a B- LT? There is of course. Is that difference worth a ton of money? Not really.

I think Whitworth's decline may be over-exaggerated, he also has had to play his position right next to guys who have had no or extremely few NFL snaps at LG. OL chemistry didn't really exist this season. And not to over-emphasize Notebooms LT experience which is quite limited, he did have 78 2018 offensive snaps as a reserve and looked fine, and with zero penalties.
Still, I'd like to see the Rams draft another OT fairly high to compete with Noteboom for a starting or swing/reserve role at both LT for when Whitworth retires and/or at RT should Havenstein continue to struggle. jmo.
