Alec Ogletree might be best NFL story of 2021 preseason

If you’re contemplating the best story of the Bears’ 2021 training camp it has to be inside linebacker Alec Ogletree.

Thursday I asked him to capsulize the emotional and physical roller coaster ride he’s taken over the last four weeks.

“It’s been a journey, for sure,” he said. “I’ve been blessed and it hasn’t all been smooth, for sure, but I am here now, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to be here and get a chance to play. I had been training to be ready to play and hopefully get a call, but when the call came, it definitely came out of the blue.

“I didn’t think anything of it when I was up here visiting (Robert Quinn). They (Bears) called my agent, he asked me where I was at, and he was like, ‘Well, don’t leave. They want to sign you.’

“I just try to cherish the opportunity to be in this league because I was on the outside looking in, and you see a lot of guys that struggle on the outside. To come back into this league and play and do what I love to do, I just try to take it day by day and enjoy the moment of being here with the guys.”

This is a winding tale involving a number of Bears players and coincidences.

Two years after drafting Quinn in the first round, the Rams used their first rounder on Ogletree, beginning a close friendship between the two and a sterling NFL career for both.

Halfway through the final year of his rookie deal, the Rams gave Ogletree a $42.75 million extension including $21.3 million guaranteed.

Then shockingly, the Rams, facing a salary cap squeeze, dealt Ogletree to the Giants six months later.

The signature moment of his 2018 season came Week 13 with two interceptions, including a pick-six off Chase Daniel in an overtime upset of the Bears.

After the 2019 campaign, the second in a row in which he played just 13 games, the Giants, facing a complete rebuild, released Ogletree.

On the street as the pandemic roared across the country, he was unable to find work, but the Rams, unable to adequately replace Ogletree after he was dealt, signed Bears free agent linebacker Leonard Floyd.

Ogletree had a cup of coffee with the Jets to start 2020, but by Oct. 10 he was out of the league. It seemed possible, if not likely, his career was over.

Then came that shocking call at Quinn’s house.

What nobody saw coming next was Ogletree picking off six passes in his first four Bears practices. How did he do it after almost a year away from the game?

“I’m wiser,” Ogletree said. “I’ve seen a lot of coverages, a lot of defenses, played in pretty much anything. So I kind of know how things work and stuff like that.”

That feels like a bit of an understatement now, doesn’t it?

Still, Ogletree was left on pins and needles just like the lowest of undrafted rookie free agents right up until Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline.

Surprisingly he told me had no idea what was next when the team sat him in the final exhibition last Saturday evening. He wasn’t sure if he would make the roster right up until Tuesday’s deadline.

“I didn’t want to assume anything or feel like I’m owed this, no matter what I’ve done,” Ogletree said. “So you just try to, like I said, just enjoy the moment, just be in the moment and live every day as well as you can.”

Has all of this left him something of a philosopher?

“You’re not always going to have the right opportunity to do something, even though you think you should, but when you do have the opportunity, it’s what you do with that opportunity while you’re there,” Ogletree said. “I just tried to take it day by day, didn’t want to hold anything back. Just tried to come out and be me and capitalize on the opportunity that the Bears gave me.”

Happy endings are always nice, and while no one is happy Danny Trevathan landed on injured reserve, Ogletree will now be starting for the Bears on Sunday Night Football in less than two weeks.

Talk about a road well traveled.

When Ogletree does manage to not whiff on a tackle... he delivers some punishing hits. When he makes contact, bad things can happen to the ball carrier.
Didn't he miss a crucial open field tackle in the Atlanta playoff game? I've tried to forget that game between Pharoh Cooper's punt return adventures and Higbee and Watkins both dropping late TD's

.

i have no doubt in my mind that after mcvay watched ogletree whiff on a routine tackle against the falcons in the playoffs on 3rd down with the rb needing 12 yards to get to the marker he told snead to get rid of that guy. had nothing to do with the cap.

coleman was facing his own endzone. should have been the easiest tackle for a lber to shut down with 12 yards of cushion behind him. but for some reason ogletree was in a massive hurry to get there. i can remember thinking what the fuck are you doing when he sprinted towards coleman. one side step and he was easily beaten.

inexcusable. first drive of the 2nd half. after cooper had screwed the rams to a two score deficit the rams had slowly worked their way back into the game and had gained some momentum. getting a 3 and out on the first drive of the 2nd half would have kept the momentum in their favour. instead ogletree whiffed and the falcons went on an excruciatingly long 8 minute drive for a td.

i wanted him cut on the spot. pulled off the field and cut on the sideline.

.

I wish I had your memory for detail

I liked him. No reason to slight him. He’s a better linebacker than me. Hope he does well.
My thoughts exactly. Was he an All Pro? No. But he was a good Ram and he always seemed to be around the ball to get a forced fumble, interception, fumble recovery, or lay the wood on somebody.

However, laying the wood and whiffing on somebody almost go hand in hand for some players who aren't agile enough to compensate laterally.

I'd assume him being older/savvy vet and not a young dropping the wood type of player he isn't going to be whiffing on a lot of tackles against us like some have said. I'm just glad Stafford is our QB1 not Goff otherwise I'd be fearing some INT's, strip sacks, or pick 6's.

I remember he was having a great year before getting hurt. It may have been 2014. It was a huge loss. Fisher at that time he was playing as good as any LB'er in the league. Hard to believe it's been that long.

I remember watching a Dallas game in Dallas. My wife and I were there. You could call out his mistakes before the play started. We won anyway, but it was upsetting.

I keep actually thinking he is out of the league.I saw him playing for NJ after the trade & another time against The Rams of late & believed he was hurt. He always flashed well & his game day numbers always seem ok.
He & Brockers we’re tight.Robert Quinn will be the guy to look for Sunday Night against Da Bears.Last season it was a huge game & Bears front office was so happy with Quinn & said they were not second guessing letting Leonard Floyd go.He has just signed a big contract.
Now $64 million later & those 3 gone will see how good The Rams defense is.Troy Reeder was like on of my favorite players last season. My GF loved both #51 & #54.Asked who was better watching #59 & #51.Each drill we would watch in front of us #50 wasn’t flashing in drills & he is not that player yet.I’m excited for 2021.
Ogletree I always liked. Snead & his Georgia guy. You pick Tree-Gurley or nor Sony-Floyd? Snead drafted the first 2 back to back first round picks.Tree was a guy Les Snead traded up for.Gurley was a surprise pick at #10 with his knee issues.Never understood The Rams got involved with that bidding war like Pittsburgh Bell.Bell sat out a whole season. There backups always do well with that next player up.

Let’s Go #25 & Rams

Wow - I’d have to call someone out WTF. Why slight Jared Goff who was a winner except with Fisher his rookie season.I don’t know what the future brings? Glad Matthew Stafford is The Rams starting QB as well.

I guess you must really like Troy Reeder & gave him Praise last season? At least Floyd who took over for Clay Matthews. I love the way Les Snead is always finding these type of player for Mcvay.

I guess I’m just grumpy, but (like others here apparently, lol) I still haven’t gotten over that critical 3rd and long missed tackle on the Falcons 2nd half opening dive in 2017 playoffs, Pharoah Cooper be damned, but that missed tackle was huge imo

Dude SoRam wtf you talking about? You’re not calling anybody out. We gave 2 firsts and a third to get rid of his ass.

Now do you do that for a player that is legit for your system? No.

Troy Reeder was the better option we had left last year. So before you go have a debate with yourself in a thread or wish Hekker to get off the Covid list to ship him out consider the nonsense you post on a weekly basis and say your going anybody out for anything? Stop.
