Rookie running back Cam Akers starting to emerge as Rams prepare for the stretch run

Rookie running back Cam Akers starting to emerge for Rams - NFC West- ESPN

The rookie took a handoff in the second quarter from quarterback Jared Goff at the Arizona 9-yard line and his legs did not stop -- even as he carried a defender five yards on his back -- until he crossed the goal line. "It's all a mindset thing," Akers said after the game. "If you don't got the mindset to be a dog, then the dog plays won't come to you."

The Rams are 8-4 and the victory, along with a Seattle Seahawks loss to the New York Giants, moved them into first place in the NFC West. They have the same record as the Seahawks, but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

In a running back committee with Darrell Henderson Jr. and Malcolm Brown, Akers is emerging as a powerful weapon in a crucial stretch that includes an upcoming Thursday night matchup against the New England Patriots (6-6).

"He just continues to take great leaps," quarterback Jared Goff said about the second-round pick from Florida State. "Early on in the year -- we have a lot of faith in everyone but Darrell and Malcolm were just a step ahead a little bit and understanding what we were trying to do on each play and at this point Cam is right there with them."

With his 9-yard score Sunday, Akers became the first Rams rookie since Todd Gurley II in 2015 to score a touchdown in three consecutive games.

Akers caught a 4-yard pass to score his first career touchdown in a Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He followed in Week 12 with a 1-yard touchdown run in a 23-20 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. "I have supreme confidence in myself to go out and perform," said Akers, who turned 21 this past June.

Rams coach Sean McVay described the run game against the Cardinals as "tough sledding" as they rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Akers, who came off the bench behind Henderson, led the way with 72 yards on a season-high 21 carries. He also caught a pass for 22 yards."He had some really tough, hard-earned yards," McVay said. "You're seeing a really physical player that's got explosion."

In the third quarter, on third-and-7, Brown caught a short pass and went 30 yards to help set up a 39-yard field goal. And in the fourth quarter, with the Rams clinging to a 24-21 lead, Henderson broke away for a 38-yard touchdown run."All three of those backs did a great job contributing," McVay said.

Henderson, who missed time during the game because of a knee injury that he eventually returned from, rushed for 49 yards on three carries. Brown was unable to get moving in the run game, as he had minus-3 yards on three carries but came through with the third-down reception.

Akers' 22 touches were the most from any Rams back this season. Brown had 21 touches in a season-opening win over the Dallas Cowboys and Henderson also had 21 in a Week 3 loss to the Buffalo Bills.Akers said his increased touches helped him find a flow. "More always helps, I'll say that much," Akers said. "If you get more carries, it's kind of easier to get in a rhythm."
Said Goff: "He can catch, he can run, he can do anything we want him to do and he had a great day."

The Rams' use of Akers has been inconsistent.Out of training camp, he earned the starting job ahead of Henderson and Brown. But he suffered a rib injury early in Week 2 and was sidelined the following two games. He returned in Week 5, but came off the bench. And despite being available in Week 6 and 7, he did not record a touch.

Over the last five games, Akers has rushed for 244 yards and two touchdowns on 54 carries.
At the start of the second half of the schedule, McVay said he trusted that Akers would have a "really good" remainder of the season. So far, so good.

Akers’ breakout game on ground bodes well for Rams’ future

BY GREG BEACHAM AP SPORTS WRITER
DECEMBER 11, 2020 03:52 PM

Cam Akers appears ready to provide the rushing brilliance that the Los Angeles Rams have been mostly missing since midway through their Super Bowl season two years ago.

For the moment, coach Sean McVay insists his speedy rookie is still just one part of a ground attack that has shown signs of rejuvenation all season long for the Rams (9-4).

Akers' 171-yard performance in the Rams’ 24-3 thrashing of New England on Thursday night evoked memories of just how effective McVay’s offense was when Todd Gurley was regularly churning out yards by the hundreds in 2017 and 2018.

Gurley's production decline amid murky knee problems slowed the Rams on their way to the Super Bowl, and his ineffectiveness last season ultimately forced the Rams to reboot their running game without their franchise running back.

That reboot looks like a success with the increasing emergence of Akers down the stretch: The Rams moved up to eighth in the NFL with 128.9 yards rushing per game after beating New England with 186 total yards on the ground. The Rams finished last season 26th in the league with 93.7 yards rushing per game after being third in 2018 with 139.4.

Put another way: Akers rushed for more yards against the Patriots than Gurley managed in any game last season.

Akers’ speed and elusiveness are undeniable, but McVay said Friday that Akers is still a part of a trio. Darrell Henderson also looked sharp before he was slowed by injuries, and Malcolm Brown is a reliable veteran leader.

“I think what’s important for us is capitalizing on all the different playmakers that we do have,” McVay said. "Certainly Cam did a great job (Thursday) night, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t see opportunities for Darrell and Malcolm (Brown) moving forward, because both of those players have done a lot of really good things. ... We're really pleased with Cam, and not surprised."

McVay thought the Rams’ rushing total could have been even bigger, but he got conservative on purpose after LA’s 90-yard scoring drive in the third quarter because of his defense’s dominance. The Rams still won a game with more yards rushing than yards passing for the first time since the 2018 season.

A blowout win over the Patriots before a national television audience is a pretty good way to start a long weekend, and the Rams earned the right to a little satisfaction from their fourth win in five games out of their bye week, even while they realize they've got much more to do to stay atop the NFC West.

Dominating the Pats — even this Brady-free, drastically weakened 2020 version of Bill Belichick's club — felt like a landmark in the Rams' surprisingly strong season.

But veteran defensive tackle Michael Brockers believes it's only part of a process for an aspiring Super Bowl contender.

“I don’t want to say we peaked, because after a peak, you’re going downhill,” said Brockers, who had two sacks. “So we’ll continue just to keep climbing, getting better and staying consistent each and every week.”

WHAT'S WORKING
Coordinator Brandon Staley's defense thrashed another opponent, holding the Pats to 220 total yards, stopping three drives on downs and keeping New England out of the end zone entirely. Los Angeles' D nudged into the NFL lead for fewest total yards allowed (285.8) and yards passing allowed (191.7). Staley's group also bounced back superbly from allowing four touchdowns at Arizona last week.

WHAT NEEDS HELP
The offense was undeniably inconsistent. The Rams had three lengthy scoring drives, but managed just 65 total yards on their other eight drives. McVay's purposely conservative second-half approach played a part, but the Rams probably need more than 17 offensive points to beat most good teams, even with their dominant defense.

STOCK UP
Linebacker Kenny Young had the biggest game of his three-year NFL career, making a 79-yard interception return for a touchdown while leading the Rams with eight tackles and getting a sack. Young hasn't always made major impacts this season despite having a prominent role in LA's thin group of inside linebackers, but he was all over the field against the Patriots.

STOCK DOWN
Jared Goff shares the NFL lead in completions with Ben Roethlisberger (324), but his quarterback rating is down to 23rd in the league (60.6), and his 11th interception was his 15th turnover of the season. Goff is mostly getting the job done in 2020, but brilliant games have been rare.

INJURED
McVay reported no new injuries Friday after the Rams' second game in five days. He always credits the team's remarkable durability throughout his tenure to Reggie Scott, the team's senior director of sports medicine and performance

KEY NUMBER
42 — The Rams' total sacks this season after dropping Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham six times. That's the second-most in the NFL for now, and it's more than the Rams managed in their entire 2018 regular season, which ended in the Super Bowl. Aaron Donald had 1 1/2 sacks to take the overall NFL lead with 12 1/2 this season, and he applied seven pressures on just 23 rushes, according to Next Gen Stats.

WHAT'S NEXT
After a long weekend off, the Rams prepare to host the New York Jets next Sunday, Dec. 20. McVay has already been talking up the winless club and its quarterback, former USC star Sam Darnold.

Here's a bit from the pre-season I wrote

Part One: Why I'm So Excited

Offense:
I'm excited for a few reasons. One is clearly Cam Akers. The more film I watch on him, the more from a pattern perspective I see a slightly slower, slightly less jukey, harder to bring down version of Marshall Faulk. He's got wicked soft hands, makes one-handed contested catches and runs legit routes. Having been a QB, that makes sense. He's got that "coach on the field" mentality like Marshall as well. I am fairly certain that when McVay sees up close what he can do, we're going to see him featured in the run game and the pass game. Moreover, with Cam Akers, we will have a legit option for those screen passes that McVay is so enamored with.

Love Cam Akers performance last night. I am concerned about one thing: Don't you think defenses are now going to clamp down on him. A sort of stop Akers and you stop the Rams. They started doing that with Gurley. And I'm really concern about playoff opponents focusing on Akers. What do y'all think?

His suddenness is his biggest strength IMO. Accelerates through the los like Zeke. He completely changes the look of this offense the Pats were in shock.

Also worth noting is that a back like him gives the OL a big mental boost too. They feel that shit and it affects things. Akers is the type of guy you can stuff and stuff then BOOM. I fuckin love seeing him in this backfield.

I was laughed at for being so excited about Cam Akers. I said at the time we drafted him that I would have been thrilled if the Rams moved up 10 places to get him. I didn't believe he would be available and I was surprised more fans weren't as excited as I was. I even convinced myself that there must be something I was missing because to me, Cam Akers looked like a natural.

TG seemed to do some sort of split second hesitation or foot shuffle which also contributed to him losing his groove. Cam is like a drop of water in a stream where he just follows the opening with split second precision. Rams hitting solid gold again in the draft!

Akers was a great pick. We're just now starting to see what he brings to the table, after a little no-preseason learning curve and bruised ribs heal up.

It's pretty obvious now that with any decent blocking Akers is dynamite. To me at least he does recall some shades of LeVeon Bell and Faulk.

Quick, patient, then sudden and explosive, then powerful and dragging tacklers. A constant threat to break out downfield. Catches the ball, and then an immediate threat in open space.

Smart, level headed, and totally self confident. 21 years old.

Akers may well be the difference maker the Rams' O needs to break out again. Just in time for the stretch run and the playoffs.

during the draft people that were watching for updates on the internet were telling us that we weren't gonna like the pick. i was worried for some reason, didn't know who it would be for them to react like that. when they announced on tv the rams selected akers it was a huge relief. why wouldn't people like this pick? his highlight tapes were fantastic. even his lowlight tapes were not so bad.

Opposing defenses could very well bring more defenders in the box. I don't think it worked out so well for Bellicheat. His game plan was to stop the short throws, and stack the LOS to stop the run. The Rams ruined it by going 12 formation and using our WRs who excel at blocking.

At the end of the 3rd quarter you could see Bellicheat stacking the box to defend the run. If the Rams wanted to throw over that they could have. I don't think you beat the Rams by stacking the box and playing zone on our receivers (using cbs to defend long and outside runs). That's a recipe for getting a 40 burger dropped on you by Goff.

What struck me about Akers this game, his side movement was so quick. After the handoff, he was sudden with it.... glide-stick-go!

That’s what Gurley so amazing, then one day it was gone.

Hopefully Cams the real deal and not another Tre Mason-Zac Stacy situation.

A lot of those runs would have been no gainers for 2019 Gurley.

Brown should be limited to redzone and short yardage situations where they want a bullrush type carrier. Other than that his ass should be firmly planted on the pine.

Brown is not the vet who knows the whole offense and doesn't make mistakes. He's not the safe option. He's the vet who still fucks up. Also in pass pro Akers has been pretty damn good. So I don't see any real dropoff. I think the problem right now is all mental and getting Akers to where he can survive a full install with most of the snaps he probably is not there yet. He's been stuck in the "study these run plays for this Sunday" mode and that last game started looking like his college film so maybe he's turning the corner that's my hope at least.
Here's a cool breakdown video from earlier in the season. It's shows Cam before he was comfortable
enough to show any of the excellent patience, he has been showing of late.
It also shows Hendo and Brown and how far ahead they were at that time.
Cam has come a LOOONG way from the Dallas game. It's just a testament to the work he has put in.

Yeah, Cam is so smooth that you don't SEE the acceleration, you just watch and it looks like the other guys are just kinda slow.

That kind of acceleration, that "sneaky fast" type of back is hell for defenses because their eyes trick them. They think they've got an angle and then... he just glides past them.

When you combine that with his very sudden ability to change direction without losing speed or balance... yeah.

There's a reason I said he was a slightly slower Marshall Faulk after we drafted him.

Many of his runs that woulda had Hendo and Brown in the backfield, Akers turns into 4 yard runs. How many times did Akers turn a 3 yard run into a 9 yard pile moving run?

I will say that I'm glad McVay isn't going full Bum Philips. That should have the kid fresh for the playoffs.

If we account for QBs ‘that run’ (at least 5 come to mind) padding teams rushing stats, then is our rushing attack even better than advertised?

I do like the Bell comparisons. I think Cam is seeing the field much better but he still can get better seeing the cutback lanes.

He needs to be just a little more patient.

I am most excited to see him catch the ball out of the backfield. His hands and his ability to make people miss or just out run them is going to be a huge upgrade over Brown.
