So... when that SI cover came out, I thought that all old cougars were in love with Jones. It weirded me out thinking about it.
Did we even know what the term "cougar" meant back then? Anyway I was a Vince Ferragamo fan and the acquisition of Jones proved how Georgia was Penny wise & dollar foolish. Georgia would not pay Ferragamo after the 1980 season, which he set team records with 3199 yards and 30 TD's. She decided to stick with Pat Haden and Vince went off to Canada. Then after Haden was another epic fail in 1981, she trades several draft choices for the washed up Jones and Ferragamo came back from Canada and then replaced Jones after his career neck injury, but if she had paid Ferragamo in the first place like she should have, they never would have dealt with trading those picks for Jones.

She wasn't late to her own funeral, but, she was late to Carroll's funeral. Strangest time ever as Rams fans.

The ceremony got off on the wrong foot when Georgia was an hour late. Sandy Scully, CR’s former executive assistant, remembers Georgia’s grand, if tardy, entrance: “Everybody was very uncomfortable. We were all waiting there and didn’t know what was going on with her.”
When the memorial service finally did start, comedian Jonathan Winters, one of Carroll’s close friends, acted as master of ceremonies. Two vocalists sang Carroll’s favorite songs. NFL commentator Howard Cosell, star of Fantasy Island Ricardo Montalbán, and Hawaii Five-O regular Ross Martin were among those who delivered eulogies. Don Rickles performed his trademark off-color shtick. Some thought it was the perfect celebration of Carroll’s raucous spirit.

Some people just love to make a grand entrance. Going over some of Georgia's Head Coach hires, they were checkered at best.

  1. John Robinson 1983...The Rams had just hired Ray Nagel as Director of Football Operations and Nagel was interviewing perspective Head Coaches focusing in on Arizona State's Darryl Rogers, when Georgia swopped in and hired John Robinson without letting anyone else know on Valentine's Day. Nagel spent one year with Rams as he was never given any power whatsoever. Result...Robinson much better hire then Rogers, who was hired by Detroit in fired four years later with an overall record of 18-40.
  2. Chuck Knox 1992...Georgia's primary henchman advised her to hire 49er Assistant Mike Holmgren, but Georgia overruled Shaw and hired Chuck Knox, who she said that her late husband Carroll said was his biggest mistake letting Knox go in 1978....Result Holmgren would have been the better hire although Frontier did give Knox power as he was also President of Football Operations.
  3. Dick Vermeil 1999...Georgia this time listens to Shaw and brings back Vermeil after a 15 year hiatus proving even a blind squirrel finds a nut (John Shaw) that is. Result...Super Bowl Title 1999.
  4. Scott Linehan 2008...On her Death Bed, Georgia tells son Chip, to give Scott Linehan another year, he's an affable fellow and deserves one more year. Result, don't listen to someone that close to the after life and Milquetoast Linehan proved once again he couldn't motivate a Marine at a Brothel & was fired after getting off to a 0-4 start after going 3-13 the previous year.

Ross Martin. Wow... I didn't know they were buds. I'm glad you posted this Brudda.
