How easy is this tendency to bite on play action to fix?


Sharp points out a key vulnerability in the Rams’ defense: “The LA Rams have been a great story down the close of the season. However, this defense is the most sensitive to play action in the NFL.” The Rams have struggled against play action since Week 10, ranking dead last in EPA per attempt allowed, success rate allowed, and yards per attempt, allowing a staggering 11.9 yards per attempt. Conversely, they excel when facing non-play action passes, allowing only 4.4 yards per attempt, the best in the NFL, and ranking number two in success rate and nine in EPA per attempt.

Since week 10 ... interesting. The big bomb that Spoon was covering, the deep post was PA. Durant's wasn't. Would have to check some of the other plays. .. but interesting data.

It can be corrected, PA buys time through distraction, Inefficient movements. Stay disciplined on the back end and don't over commit up front is a simplified correction. The way you communicate and accomplish that will be up to the players and coaches. It is really about getting back into the correct read as quickly as possible

IMO, play action is most effective on first and second down after you have had success running the ball on previous plays. IF it is 3rd and 7 rdyas to go, play action is not that effective because the defense is already keying on the pass.

I think this stat started growing when Morris started playing the single high safety with man coverage. The Safeties have not played well, biting on underneath moves and not staying deep.

Yeah I'd go with safeties need to play better, that is the guys in the pairing. Also if Durant can make the most of that look outside the hash that would be real nice for us. Those two things should help us immensely.

I’m sure they are aware of it. First to last is an enormous gap and they do rely on analytics.

Fans complain but it’s part of the game. Both WRs and DBs practice holding in ways that aren’t obvious to the refs. We saw it in slow motion on replay but sometimes it’s hard to catch in real time.

Oddly enough, Fuller is supposed to have a great football mind. He was had the green dot in his first year, didn’t he?

Fuller nor JJ have the closing speed to make up for bad guesses. This is not a strong safety class in the 2024 draft. I hope they can find a decent one in free agency. I wouldn’t want them to have to use an early pick on a safety unless it was a very good one.

Honestly, I do agree this is one of the correctable issues. Basically just stay in position and don't bite. It's possible some of the long gainers were robber calls where the safety was given the liberty to roam underneath. Either way, just staying back is a easy fix. Compare that to, needing a pash rushing edge or a cover CB or Run stopper or linebacker. All those things require actual talent.

Also, if teams are scheming to beat us over the top, since it's a so called "Weakness" of ours, then that would be an advantage to us if we are committed to staying deep with both safety's. It's going to be Surprise! we aren't leaving that open any more.

It has not been corrected yet true, but maybe the repeated failures will eventually allow the message to get across and the technique to be polished. May even have to get yeast or someone else back there who has more speed then Fuller.
