An interesting development on the injury front.

49ers C Weston Richburg out for year; Richard Sherman, Dee Ford also hurt

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers' wild win against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday came with a hefty price.

Starting center Weston Richburg suffered a torn right patellar tendon early in the third quarter of the Niners' 48-46 win in New Orleans, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday afternoon.

The injury ends a strong season for Richburg, who will miss the final three games and postseason and have to undergo surgery and the accompanying rehab. Richburg's injury was the most serious but the Niners also had a pair of shorter-term injuries to key players as cornerback Richard Sherman and defensive end Dee Ford are expected to miss some time with hamstring injuries.

Shanahan said Sherman would likely miss "a couple of weeks" with his right hamstring strain and Ford, who aggravated a previous right hamstring injury, would be expected to miss "at least" three weeks. Nickel cornerback K'Waun Williams is in concussion protocol and defensive tackle D.J. Jones is dealing with a sprained ankle.
"It's tough," Shanahan said. "It was a huge win and we enjoyed that a ton obviously but some mixed feelings today with some of these injuries, which is tough, especially losing Richburg for the year. The other guys got some serious ones, too, hopefully we can keep playing well so we can give them a chance to come back and help us if we can make our season longer than three games."

Emmanuel Moseley figures to step in for Sherman opposite Ahkello Witherspoon while the Niners have already been using Ford in limited snaps because of hamstring, knee and quadriceps injuries. Shanahan said he anticipates some roster movement coming, although any moves have yet to be decided.

Richburg's injury happened on third-and-1 when running back Tevin Coleman was stopped for a 3-yard loss. On the play, Richburg was driven back at the same time as guard Mike Person, with Person's left leg crashing into the back of Richburg's right leg.

Almost immediately, Richburg crumpled to the ground and grabbed for the injured leg. In the Superdome press box, the injury was announced as ankle and knee issues, and Richburg left the locker room on crutches as his teammates lamented losing one of their most important and underrated offensive players.

"Losing Weston is big," left tackle Joe Staley said. "He's the center position on our offensive line. He's one of the captains for our group and you don't want to see him go down at all."

After the game, Shanahan indicated the injuries were serious, although further testing was needed to determine the extent. That testing confirmed the Niners' fears on Monday and they will now be without Richburg for the rest of the season.

The patellar injury comes a year after Richburg played 12 games of the 2018 season with what turned out to be torn left quadriceps. Richburg believed that injury to be a knee sprain, so he played through it before doctors told him it was much worse at the end of the season.

Richburg had surgery in the offseason and didn't return to practice until just before the start of the season. In his absence, Ben Garland will step into the starting role. Garland, who filled in for Richburg in training camp and the preseason, earned positive reviews for how he played in Richburg's place against New Orleans.

"Ben came in and I think we have a deep group," Staley said. "I think we've seen that all year. Guys just step in and I think that just talks to the urgency that everybody has and the way that they understand the next man up and how special this team is."

Let's see how the Niners deal with Injurys.

It's not fun.

when they beat us earlier this season they were playing with their top 3 tackles out.

maybe this center injury will be different, but they have already had tests of their depth.

Losing their Center could be huge. Guess who plays 3T for the Rams? Normally it's the center and OG doubling on him.....

The Ram's o-line is completely different than the one they faced the first time. This version is far better. Also they are much improved this time around in the secondary as well. The Ram secondary right now is better than the one they rang up big points on in Aintville.

Turnovers and mistakes will be the only way I see the Niners winning that game. They are a good team for sure. But it's about matchups. The Ram secondary matches up well and the Ram d-line matches up well. The Ram offense IMO is better than the Aints because of the quality of the WR's. They will be in zone most of the time because of the depth of WR's, TE's and Gurley. So give Goff time and he's got the accuracy to destroy it.

As is the case in so many games it's going to be won or lost by the play of the 0-line and D-line. Win the LOS on both sides and win the game. A month ago I wouldn't feel so confident. But this O-line is coming together. Edwards and Blythe are the only real weak points. I expect the Niners to run multiple stunts against a young line. How well they adjust will be the key. The problem is Blythe has shown he struggles both at C and OG seeing the stunts. I would like to see McVay run more two back sets or at least play Brown on obvious passing downs, as he's a much better blocker than Gurley.

Overall I feel good about this game as long as they can stay healthy and eliminate mistakes.

Their D line is still scary as fuck.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how our young guns hold up on our oline. That will be a true test.

Staley has majorly declined, his backup played better than Staley, when Staley came back.

Mcglinchey is like Havenstein. Execellent run blocker but poor pass blocker. I am not sure having him out affected them much.

The thing is Donald will be lining up inside vs their backup. Richburg was having an excellent season inside.

The Sherman loss might be their biggest. Sherman is the #1 CB in the NFL and a big reason why the Niners had the #1 pass defense in the NFL. Their defense was already in decline giving up 23ppg in the last 6 games.

If we can take card of Business vs the Cowboys and play our game against the Niners then lookout. We are now getting healthy while they get to deal with the injurys the rest of the league has.

I like MCVay's track record when playing a team for the second time. I think the Rams have a good shot at winning the Niners matchup. This team is playing much better on both sides of the ball. They have a revamped defense with the addition of Ramsey, and Hill starting. Brockers is playing better than he was earlier in the year. Lately Ebukam has been showing up too.

On offense, the number one issue has greatly improved. OLine was bad in the first matchup. Plus this group will have another game under their belt by the time they play the Niners.

Everyone has to deal with injuries.

When we play the Niners in two weeks Kyle Shanahan is the one that will be the toughest to strategize against. He’s got Jimmy STD playing well. Our defense is going to have to play disciplined and come up with some turnovers.

Shanny is the best at the run game. That and his use of Kittle are the keys to shutting them down. Stuff their run game, put Garoppolo in third and long, and don't give up early reads to Kittle.

But all I care about right now is Dallas. Are the Rams past their irritating tendency to come out flat vs lesser matchups? One game at a time.
