To make the team, Bennett doesnt even have to prove he's worthy of potentially starting in Stafford's absence. He just needs to be able to make the throws in practice with the 1st/2nd teamers so they can limit Stafford's exposure. That's it.
Hrm. I think that's a bit of an oversimplification.

Simpson's overall growth in camp and readiness will definitely factor in too, and there's a long way to go in camp to include all the scrimmages vs other teams and all the preseason games. So way I see it there is a competition and the results of that competition are going to matter.

Trying to read between the lines on the odd camp comment and highlight we've seen, it's hard to say to what extent that competition has favored Bennett. I think he's definitely winning thus far, but that's to be expected vs a QB who had so few starts in college. Also from that perspective I think your take is accurate as it pertains to a redshirt being good for him. But if Simpson can show a full grasp of the playbook and McVay starts thinking "hell I can probably give him the Goff treatment by helping him read pre-snap" that could affect things.

And again I think it's a factor that Bennett is likely to clear waivers if they cut him. Which again means he's not just playing for that backup role, but to force the Rams to reconsider his ability to clear waivers by kicking the rook's ass in the competition and showing the league he can run this offense with good efficiency. Because if he does that then I think it changes things significantly in his favor.

This was the #1 offense last year…I’m expecting something like that again.

Can still be #1 offense and be defense-firsr team, in theory. I mean, adding Hall of Fame talents McDuffie, Garrett and possibly Donald wouldn't make it so???

Excellent post, the only thing I'll disagree with is I dont think Simpson is trailing because of so few starts in College. I think he's trailing because installation and learning of McVay's offense and verbiage takes a whole training camp in and of itself. If this was NEXT YEARS training camp Simpson would be WELL ahead of Bennett, naturally.

im ok with bennett, probably because as usual, i defer to those that know...

if simpson balls out in the preseason, i might change my tune...

let's get this thing underway, cuz i can't wait to see the kid!!

go rams

That he's underwhelming is certainly a valid opinion. I'm seeing that he's had some up and down moments, but more importantly, I see where McVay has said his improvement from last year is night and day.

If you're using practice reports as your evidence, then you're also obligated to take their reports that it's not much of a competition between QB2 and QB3 so far. #2 is clearly Bennett.

Maybe your question/wondering more pertains to if they'll cut Bennett and bring in a vet?
I feel I've stated that? I've never suggested Simpson was beating him out.

Yes.. that would be the scenario.

As far as how the QBs are doing or things I think I think I know:

- Rams seem to have a goal reported by Nate of not having Simpson take a gameday snap this year
- Simpson started to play better in camp when pads went on
- Simpson's got very limited to no snaps at at QB 2 (I think but not sure that he's actually gotten no snaps at QB 2)
- Simpson has not yet shown an ability in camp to drive the ball down the field (consistently or at all??) in this offense
- McVay's expressed that Bennett has improved from years past to now
- Bennett has had some up and down days in camp
- Joint practices with Saints and Cowboys will probably be definitive as to whether we stay with Bennett or seek out a veteran presence at QB 2 (I don't think this is likely).
- Rams have had at least one day during camp where Simpson hasn't done team drills and seems to just be drilling on mechanics, this does not speak to a guy who will challenge for QB 2 whether against Bennett or a veteran this year
- Nobody knows anything, I just think I know more of less

I've stayed out of the QB2 conversation because i think it is moot at this point. We will know a lot more once the preseason games start. I will say one thing though and that is don't give up on Stetson Bennett. I was not a fan of this pick and I'm still not but he has managed to hang on for 4 years now which says a lot about the young man and also what McVay thinks of him. And don't forget his college production was phenominal. If McVay still has faith in this guy then I do too. That said... I still hope Jimmy G comes back because I think he could manage the offense in a pinch, He's no Stafford but he's not bad either. McVay may only go with Bennett and Simpson this year but if Stafford gets hurt and Jimmy G is still available... I'm sure McVay would call him.

Sure, Kyle Allen can steer the ship in Buffalo for 8 games. Jarrett Stidham in Denver? We all saw how THAT was last Playoffs. Burrow goes down er......I'll check who Cincinnati 's backup is and get back to you......

If Stafford goes down for 8 games we're in major trouble. Thats with either Garoppolo OR Simpson stepping in. So if we HAD TO play run-heavy and rely on our Defense you'd equate that to Fisher days??? With THIS Defense? Really???
Disagree, Garoppolo would do just fine. I hate that he has 9er stench but lets not pretend like je didn't win with a pretty good defense in SF. Obviously rather have Stafford stay upright and healthy.

You must be new here. :laugh2:
What if we drafted Creed Humphrey instead of Tutu?

The expectation should be that our defense holds teams to 10 points. If Stafford goes down, that unit will have to carry the day.
Won't help the defense they are on the field all day if the offense craps the bed all day long. Defenses need some rest to be effective. It'll be interesting to find out but I rather not lol

Does he have any value? 4 years and not a single pass attempt.
I'm not even sure if anyone would poach him off the practice squad. I haven't been sold on Bennett since he had to take a year off for whatever reason. Makes me question his drive. His love of football. I think drafting Simpson is a huge tell too.

Disagree. Rams made it clear they want to take their time with Simpson. There is absolutely no reason to rush him. There isn’t a competition unless Bennett completely shits the bed. It’s like the Ferguson treatment.
McVay has had a placeholder at backup qb every season. It’s just the way he does things.

Man, there is a LOT of really exciting stuff in that piece. The Donald stuff is only the beginning. The observation that TFerg looks like he will be the 3rd receiving option behind Puka and Davante ... another plug for CJ Daniels ... the remarks about Max Klare and the depth of the TE room (I've never seen the room this deep in more than 50 years of Rams fandom) ... and the stuff about Corum looking like he's going to level up. This team is fucking loaded.

A must read.

Disagree that drafting Simpson had ANYTHING to do with Bennett. Drafting Simpson had to do with Stafford, and post Stafford succession plan which Bennett never was in the discussion of.
