Per Nate, it sounds like if Stafford is down for any amount of time, Rams will come calling for Jimmy. And sounds like their initial plan was to have Jimmy at 2 and Simpson at 3 before Jimmy went all Imma retire on them.

Will be interesting to see if Bennett plays preseason.
Aren't the tea leaves saying and aren't all implications that McVay trusts Bennett now, and Jimmy G is not needed?

Disagree. I say Bennett has now approached JG level.
Ron Burgundy What GIF

You can hope that he's reached that level, but you can't disagree with my basis for it.

Bennett has zero game experience.
And with that kind of thinking he will never GET any, LOL.

Jimmy G is a done deal and a retired player. We will roll :

1. Stafford
2. Bennett
3. Simpson

I would listen to the Nate interview from Sat. Sure sounds like they'd be okay going with a current backup if Stafford was out a game or two but anything more sounds like they'd be calling Jimmy. Specifically talks about them wanting a guy who's started games and a guy who has played in the playoffs for the 2 spot.

The plan was for Jimmy to be the 2 and Simpson to be the 3 till Jimmy waffled. Rams then tried to get Kirk. Bennett is a shaky plan C. Perhaps he has improved. Maybe that's enough.

Sure sounds like Rams park does not want to find out.

Bennett will 100% play this preseason. He’ll start the first game. He’s gotten every first team rep when Stafford has sat. If he plays poorly he’ll get cut. If he lights it up I’d say there’s a 50% chance he’s QB2 and a 50% chance he gets traded for a late round pick and we bring back Jimmy. A big part of me believes McSnead just think the ceiling is way too high for this team to have a backup that’s never taken a regular season snap. And even moreso with Ty because he played so little in college.

If both QBs for the Browns continue to absolutely suck, it wouldn’t shock me if Todd Monken was open to taking a flyer on Stetson. He did an interview earlier this summer where he was gushing about Stetson and said his biggest coaching regret ever was not committing to Stetson Bennett sooner at Georgia.

I'll cosign seeing Simpson play the entire time. Keep Stetson healthy and give Simpson all kinds of experience.
A coach can't just plug a QB3 into all the snaps without eroding the good order and discipline of the roster. It would affect the mentality of the team overall as well, if the results are anything other than extraordinary. So McVay isn't going to take that level of risk to shove Simpson down the roster's throats.

The way it works is you reward the player with more importance as he earns it. Let that QB2 competition run its course. Start there, and see where it goes. Simpson doesn't need to be anything other than a redshirt this season. So there is no reason to push him up the depth chart. The players decide that on the field.

Someone help out, I don't think our QB 2 usually plays in preseason in the past, no?

If he lights it up then I expect he will be our QB2 to start the season. You can't run a QB competition and then shitcan the QB who wins it. That smacks of roster manipulation to get the result you wanted. If you give Bennett the opportunity, which the Rams have, and he lights it up the Rams will honor their end of it.

Now by midseason or so if Simpson is rocking the scout team like Mahomes did, then you have sufficient reason to move the QB2 out of his way. But those types of situations start with one QB outperforming the other QB. That has to be there in the minds of the players, where they have seen it on the field. Because they must be able to rally around the dude when his number is called.

Bennett has zero real game experience.

If Jimmy is available and Stafford is going to be out anything more than one week, they're calling him.
I don't think they can wait to see if someone gets hurt. Before the season they have to decide between having Bennett or Jimmy G on the roster. Simpson has to be on the roster or get stolen.

I guess they could have the rookie on the roster as QB2 and Bennet on PS to save space and then if Stafford is out for an extended period bring Bennet back and start him.

With everything that is on the line I would dump Bennet for Jimmy right now, but I am afraid with AD coming back and all the players coming due for contracts that the Rams are trying to get by without paying Jimmy. I hope it doesn't bite them in the ass.
