McVay gets criticized for not prioritizing the OL but each year there are ppl here that want us to trade up for a skill position.

Was drafting Ferg not the right move?

In this case I think it was the right move. Tight End has been a need with Higbee’s age and young guys not developing. Besides the OTs available at pick 26 weren’t that great and not worth passing up a first round pick next year.

The reality is that it’s tough to find a franchise left tackle without giving up draft capital in a trade or without having an early pick. A drafted OLT, especially in the 2025 draft, and after pick 26 would not be guaranteed to solve the Rams current dilemma at the position. I’d say the odds of patching that hole are higher with a proven vet or two, like they did.

And they did resign AJ and brought back Coleman Shelton. Maybe they thought those two moves we’re enough.

Post draft the biggest weakness on the roster was swing OT, because we knew that Jackson generally speaking was likely to miss some time. Now the biggest weakness on the roster is LT. No telling how this will play out, but just like I said last year when the Rams were fiddle fucking around with Avila after he clearly wasn't impressing at C, this is what qualifies as a bad look for the season.

Also and for the record I was behind the Rams' approach on Jackson. Just like with Noteboom I knew there was risk but overall approved of the way the Rams handled the situation. Both instances they rolled the dice. With Noteboom they got burned. This time we'll have to wait and see.

In McVay's time with us the typical failure element for him is the OL. It is where his teams typically come up short and where the most instances of the fans being right when they criticize the roster have occurred. There have been quite a few subpar options that were depended on more than they should have been, and questionable approaches mixed in, than at any other position. Basically if you look at McVay's insanely high standards with his pass catchers, or QB, compared to what he has accepted on the OL, it demonstrates that the OL group is the biggest area of weakness for an otherwise Hall of Fame level coach.

Said this on another board and will again here. That if McVay had an elite OL coach he would be running a dynasty. But instead he's had a steady stream of median types at best who have contributed to the subpar decisions they have made over time with that unit. The fact that I agreed with their decision on Boom or Jackson is irrelevant here, because I'm just some asshole pounding beers on his couch. If it backfires it will be exactly like with Boom, where we say ok they fucked this up and move on after it costs them a year window. It sucks but there is really no reason to try to sugar coat it.

Lastly as it pertains to how McVay will operate IF Jackson is a loss overall for the season... The best approach would be a heavy run game. McVay on the positive side of the ledger is a master of misdirection in his scheme and manufacturing movement for the offense even when they are undergunned up front. He's had a ton of practice doing that. And I really like this RB room. Can he actually do that though. Can he actually discipline himself to run the ball. Well I'd say that he has shown in streaks an ability to do that, though it usually happens after a bad run of losses like in 2018. Also overall it seems like he has to have high trust in his lead back to do it.

So all of the above is a long winded way of arriving at what I think is now the most important competition on the roster, that being the question of whether Hunter can win a primary role and add some explosive plays to this unit. Because I don't believe in Williams as a lead back. I don't believe he is going to fix a fumbling problem that is the result of a weak chicken wing when he's working his contact balance, as that is a huge part of his game. I hope the Rams don't sign him prior to this season due to that. Corum is a potential high volume back but is similarly limited wrt a lack of explosiveness. So best case scenario is Hunter comes in hungry and wins a big enough role to where McVay will concede the job to him over the early part of the season. Because he is enamored with Williams, and I understand why, even though he is not going to be the dude to lead this team through a potential LT disaster.

And from there of course we have the defense. We're gonna need to be a defensive team, a team that limits points among the best in the league, to win a ton of games this year if we don't have Jackson. The front is strong enough but can the secondary live up to that? Meh. Let's just say I hope so.

Not too optimistic huh? LOL. Reason to be cautious about AJ. His condition is serious but can be managed. He will need time to get his condition under control and then to be back in football shape once he’s cleared to practice with the team. He dealt with the same condition in 2022 and was able to play most all of 2023 and 2024 with no problems so there is hope. The use of more 12 personnel could help them protect the LT position until they get things figured out. I’m optimistic that given the timing the Rams will be able to come up with a solution before the games count. Could see some more movement before week 1

This is why I acknowledged that I was behind Boom at the time, and Jackson just recently. Straight greed of wanting that skill position player.

But that does not change the truth of the situation. That OL tends to always be the unit that lets McVay down. Or that if McVay had found an elite OL coach by now he'd be running a dynasty.
Time is running out but I would love to see Stafford behind an elite OL. They would need a better OC and an elite LT in the next 2 years for that to happen.

I am still hoping we get a miracle with AJ. It's just that the trend is not good. Last year was the same shit. Feels like it's always something with that unit man.

But we have two first round picks next year. So getting a LT and a C should be doable if they want to.

The question never changes.....at the expense of what?
I think we have Staff for 3 more years. Ride him out. Make a run for a QB in 2027 Draft (with 1 bridge year). Make LT and OC a priority in next years draft or free agency. CB being the only other glaring need next year. Rams have 3 picks in top 64 next year. Go LT/CB/OC.

I take your point as far as Stafford is concerned. This coming crop of college QBs looks very promising but some of those touted will probably return to school, Manning included, so 2027 should be another bumber year

That said I will watching QBs like a hawk this season out of expectation and excitement :)

I would be All-For-That. It's an excellent thought and a beautiful dream but it's really difficult to do.

Elite O-Lines usually have a ton of draft capital invested in them. I mean multiple first round picks.

I'm thinking of the Lions in recent years, with three top-20 draft choices at LT, RT and Center; or the Cowboys of several years ago with three All Pros ... all first round picks.

Aside from using the best draft capital on the position, the O-Line is a difficult position for players to master. Most top young offensive linemen play as rookies but don't really perform at the highest level until they have a couple seasons of experience.

Even if the Rams hold-on to their two 2026 first round picks and use them on the O-Line (excluding QB, CB and WR) and get quality players that can be Day-1 starters ... those guys are not likely to be top-tier-OL for a couple seasons.

In my opinion finding a quality Quarterback is the most difficult challenge to a Front Office, while building a quality Offensive Line is the second-most challenging ... and ... those are at the top of my list of most critical positions to have a quality team.

The odds of a rookie coming in on OL and being dominant are very slim.
Evan an all time great like Orlando Pace had struggles as a rookie......and it would take a very high 1 to get a top LT.
Maybe next year although I think the QB year is next year.

I expect a few additions as they will bring in a camp arm and a camp leg eventually. Really wish they would bring in someone who could challenge Bennett, but most likely they will just bring back Dresser Winn, who was not good in the UFL with the Showboats.
Just read an article that said they are bringing back Dresser Winn.
