I hope so but I don't think they are looking at any short-term cap issues.

From the post above, the McCaffrey extension saves the Niners almost $12M over the next two years.

Aiyuk carries a $14M cap hit this season. A long-term extension will probably give them short-term cap relief.

But, but, wait! Isn’t that how the Rams kept so many stars on the payroll—by kicking the can down the road? Does that ever work?

Seriously, I see what you’re saying. They can keep avoiding THE BILL by extending contracts. The Rams are the gold standard for this because they made it work and won a title, but time is limited even if the $$ isn’t—guys go downhill.

Between players aging and not being able to play up to their contracts and the looming purdy extension, they’re headed for THEIR 2022/23. Right now they appear to be in the “talent retention” phase, but those guys are declining and the “talent replenishment” phase is when they have to make the hard decisions (as the Rams did).

So maybe it doesn’t necessarily come down to affording the existing roster, so much as it comes down to level of talent these guys still bring.

You packed a lot in there.

I'm just suggesting that not all extensions are the same, resulting in future salary cap hell; and the actual contract terms should be looked at and considered. Plus, it's easy to do because there are two quality sites to view and check against one another for accuracy and consistency.

Another consideration is the actual player and his performance post-extension. If a 25-year old signs a 5-year extension, and plays at a high level for the next five years, there may never be a negative cap impact.

The opposite is also true. If a player signs a big extension but then does not play to his prior high-level (for whatever reason), that will result in a negative cap impact. Todd Gurley is an example.

2018 was Gurley's last really productive season; and it was the final year of his rookie contract. The extension he signed prior to the 2018 season carried $45M guaranteed-$. That hit the Rams salary cap in subsequent years but the Rams got almost no production for that cost.

Thank you. A guy never gets tired of hearing that!

I do agree with the premise that it all comes down to player performance. That’s why I’m looking at williams and kittle to start that process. Heck, you might as well add greenlaw. As a Ram fan, I’m looking forward to seeing the deterioration of the talent on that roster.

Eventually, the Niners will be cap constrained; and need to find quality, young and less expensive talent. However, I don't think they will be in trouble as early as 2025. Huge, long-term contract extensions are usually cap friendly for the first (and often) second years of the deal.
According to Spotrac they'll be 23 million over the cap. Over The Cap has them 37 million over the cap. The top ten account for over 185 million. And they still have to pay Aiyuk and Purdy next year. They can retain most the talent with creative financing but its getting older and the depth is thin.

Vikings unveil 'Winter Warrior' alternate uniform for 2024 season

View: https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1798688634402738542

The Minnesota Vikings unveiled "Winter Warrior" alternate uniforms on Thursday.
The club called it the "coldest uniform in the league."

"This uniform celebrates Minnesota and Nordic Vikings," Vikings art manager Jackie Ramacher said in a statement. "Minnesotans are battle tested, resilient and tough. We are not only bonded by our harsh, cold winters, but we embrace them, so it's fitting that the Vikings wear the coldest uniforms in the NFL."
The all-white helmet includes a metallic gray stripe to emulate early Vikings battle helmets. Utilizing white, purple and metallic gray as the primary colors marks the first time the Vikings' uniforms have not incorporated gold into the scheme. Details include "icicle drip" numbers and a Nordic Knots pattern on the back neckline.
The Vikings plan to wear the "Winter Warrior" uniforms for their Week 15 game against the Chicago Bears on Monday, Dec. 16 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Every team is allowed up to two alternate uniforms, and the club can choose to wear the substitutes twice each season.

Eh, I don't hate it but I think it'd look better with a little purple... maybe purple socks. It's better than the all black uniforms it seems a handful of fans of every team is always clamoring for. Also, they couldn't get a better picture of a helmet where the horn decal wasn't as sloppy looking?

Yeah at least they did something different than all these teams grabbing black uniforms.

Think I'm gonna go on x and point out Vikings routinely enslaved the ones they didn't put to the sword and question why they aren't changing their name to something else. Feeling assholish today. :laugh4:

Chiefs backup lineman had a seizure and went into cardiac arrest. Not sure whom it is, but the Chiefs have cancelled all practices.

Not a very good offseason for them.

EDIT: Just heard it was B.J. Thompson, former 2023 fifth round pick. Hope he's okay.

Plus, aren't they playing in a dome now? The only cold things about Minnesota are the trips to and from the games

I kind of like the new Vikings uniform. It's certainly better than the ugly christmas sweaters that the Giants will be wearing.

I’d love to see the Rams in the Vikes Dome.
I've done it, and I HIGHLY recommend it. That stadium is widely regarded as the best in the league for a reason.
