You ever go to Ho Toys in Sherman Oaks? Chinese food place, was popular with Sinatra and other celebs as they had really good Chinese food and it meant not having to drive downtown.

The name rings familiar, but I don't recall ever eating inside there. Wasn't it on Van Nuys Blvd ? I believe my parents would order take-out on occasion from Ho Toys when I was younger. When I was in that vicinity, it was usually Hamburger Hamlet that I visited, although there were a number of good restaurants along Restaurant Row, both on Van Nuys Blvd & Ventura Blvd. During my most major dating days in the 70's & 80's, if it was dining-in for Chinese food, there was a place on Sepulveda Blvd or Van Nuys Blvd, I just can't remember clearly, somewhere near Sherman Way or Roscoe as I recall, it was owned and operated by a fairly well known Chinese character actor, it had an excellent bar that served top notch Polynesian cocktails and some really good rumaki.

Yes! It was on Van Nuys. My mom was working there in HS and met my dad there...LOL.

Oh man... huge Kurt Russell fan here. Pretty sure I've seen all of his movies (note below)

Tequila Sunrise was one of those movies that was the epitome of the 80s "STAR" movies... Mel Gibson near the apex of his fame, Michelle Pfeiffer at her hottest and most chic and Kurt Russell with that slicked back hair... oh man.

Such a FUN movie. Was kinda funny to watch how they had to dance around all those love scenes that just HAD to be in movies with any action in them...

Okay... about seeing all the movies.

I made up a game.

It's the Actor game. (I may have mentioned this before, but w/e, I got time)

Question goes around... "Is there an actor that you've seen ALL of their movies and LIKED them all. Doesn't have to be love, but liked them all". That can be tough not only because many of the greats had total bombs (LOOKING AT YOU, DUSTIN HOFFMAN... AND F/U FOR BEING THAT ABOMINATION THAT WAS ISHTAR) or you haven't seen their latest stuff... sorry... anyway, it can also be difficult if you don't have IMDB handy because you'd be surprised how many movies some folks make.

An alternative is "Is there an actor that you've liked everything you've seen them in?"

It's a fun game if you have folks over who like movies and aren't zygotes who think that Deadpool was "before their time"... ugh
And let's not forget Russell's look/vibe for that role was based on LA's biggest star at the time... Pat Riley.

I've always had people say I look like kurt and when I went as captain Ron for Halloween it was uncanny but what made it awesome was my girlfriend at the time was a Goldie look a like.

Yep. I looked up the restaurant because as I said, my mom worked the takeout window as a teenager and my dad used to go there all the time as the Encino/Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys area of the Valley was in large part the epicenter of martial arts in the US with a few schools opening up in the early 60s. When my dad got out of the Navy I think in '63 or '64 as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He'd met everyone in the martial arts scene that was the SFV in the 60s... Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Bob Ozman (Frank Dux, the inspiration for JCVD's Bloodsport, credited Bob Ozman with teaching him how to properly strike with the power that allowed him to record record breaking KO streaks and the speed of his KOs). Heck, Bob Ozman was his best man. What's funny is that my dad doesn't really like Chuck Norris.

He was at a Karate competition and he as a brown belt was fighting another brown belt from Chuck Norris' school and they didn't have a referee, so Chuck Norris says he'll referee. Well, dad didn't like this one bit and when the other guy won by like a single point on an iffy call by Norris Sensei... well... dad took exception. He just turned 80 and he's STILL not over it...LOL.

Anyway, Frank Sinatra used to love Ho Toys and even had Jilly pick up the food from there when Sinatra was in town. It was full menu and was considered among the best Chinese food restaurants in SoCal.

It's funny you mention egg fu young. No one serves that anymore. I remember looking for it a few years back and no one makes it (at least anywhere near where I am). I remember it being more popular than lo mein. As for chop suey... I can't remember when the last time I saw that on a menu... Now it's all General Tso's chicken and beef and broccoli...

For that older more nostalgic crowd, egg fu yung is incredibly easy to make at home.
