Then you look at what the Rams have. These two sites are posting slightly different numbers.

Lets say $19 million heading into the 2020 league year.

This is from the bottom of the spotrac page linked above at the bottom of the page counting the draft pool.

Cap Space from Spotrac (w/Top 51 & Projected Draft Pool) $18,192,737

Overthecap has Team Cap Space: $19,032,144

There usually seems to be confusion about the cap number with roster spots, draft pool and in season operating (roster move) numbers.

*Include top 51 players
*Includes draft pool $4,294,652
*To make it simple (I hope) the Rams get back cap space from the roster spots the drafted players replace.
*The Rams also need money during the season to make roster moves.
*I would just take the draft pool $4,294,652 as the operating amount the Rams need during the season and get to the 53 man roster.

*So yes $19 Million would be a good number to go on.

*Edit: This is only a guestimate of the cap space available for discussion purposes.

We need that ballpark figure for discussion purposes. Members have to be aware of the cap space limitations for player acquisitions.

Let's keep this updated as much as possible even if it's not an exact number but, a reasonable ballpark guestimate:cool:.

Nah.... I like grabbing numbers out of my ass and then making arguments for why we should grab high end FAs.

Sounds roughly in the expected range, where the Rams can make some key cuts to get to about $30M if they choose.

Timing on this is great. With no fucking sports it would suck ass to see the NFL FA period moved back.

I'm not sure how the numbers work but they just mentioned how restructures will only count a certain percentage in the future etc. Someone please explain???

I did however understand Mike Garafolo specifically mention Rams and Steelers could breathe a lot easier now and could spend because of the new CBA and not because of the 10 million salary cap increase. So the rams will be alive and well in free agency and maybe some smart trading.

I read that teams will get a $1.5m exemption from the salary cap for each player under contract with the team for more than four years. Offhand I think that applies to 10-15 Rams (depending on who we retain). Send like that might add another $20m to salary cap in 2020.

The way I understand it is like this. Most common way is to take a portion of a players base pay and turn it into a signing bonus that's spread over the remainder of the contract. So Goff has a base pay of $10 million. Take say $8 million of that and spread it over the last 4 years of the deal you clear up $8 million but the last 4 he takes a cap hit of $2 million more. You can also take his $21 million roster bonus that he'll get in a couple days and turn that into a different bonus and spread it over the remainder of the deal.

Took me a while but I get it lol. I'd take my chances with Goff and Donald restructure. The others I'd eat crow til after this season and decide on there future then.

Actually I think the number is closer to $25M free cap but when you factor in the rookie pool that drops it to about $21M. If they make Havenstein a June 1 release they can spread his dead cap over 2 years and get that free cap back to about $25M which is enough to do what they need to do as long as they don't waste it like re-signing an over the hill Whitworth for big bucks.

Free cap is not a hard number. There are a number of ways to clear cap. Also, teams that have a lot of free cap also have a roster full of holes and mediocre players. This team is essentially built. For those that say Noteboom and others haven't shown they can play LT, I say, neither have they shown they can't. Noteboom showed in 2018 he indeed can play the position and see no reason he can't return to form. Also, Edwards could potentially play there as well.

Yes, an edge rusher would be nice but Ebukam showed he's an impact player capable of filling that role. Ebukam is also more versatile than Fowler as he and Mathews can rotate on that edge. Mathews then becomes the fulltime SAM.

As I've said in other posts. IMO the Rams in this coming draft aren't looking for immediate starters, but depth and eventual starters which is a whole different approach to the draft. If an opportunity to grab a specific player like an edge rusher who might drop they could move up and grab him. But barring that, I think they will draft for depth and the future. Which means their cap is fine. If that is the case they can simply carry Havenstein as an expensive backup for this year and release him next year with minimal dead cap.

The Ram's public lack of concern about their FA's would tend to support the view that they feel their roster is built and this draft is about depth and the future. This means they aren't concerned about their cap as $21M free in Sept would be more than adequate. That would be enough to sign one or two selected FA's if available as it stands.

IMO the number one priority heading into free agency should be locking Ramsey up for the next four years and then go from there.

Unfortunetly, that starts in 2021 when the new CBA kicks in .

Didn't catch that. Potentially we could have as many as 19 players who qualify by then (more likely around 12). That's a lot of extra cap space.

So I guess the Rams gain $4.5 Mil with the NRC release. Now, the guestimate is up to $23.5 Million of cap space remaining. Don't know how the tenders to Mundt and Sheldon affect the cap.
