I hadn't looked that closely at the contracts in a while. I think the Rams have to cap-out Donald's deal and cut someone if they need real cap space, and there aren't many candidates. Based on the replacement talent on the roster, Weddle's $5 million seems like a possibility. Those two moves open about $17 million. I know the Rams have avoided shifting big money to future years in the past, but with how tight things are, and possible changes to the CBA, I think they might do it with Donald.

One guy that's almost never mentioned here or anywhere else about needing an extension is Robert Woods. Man is amazing for our offense and is clearly trusted by Jared and McVay. He's signed through 2021 and he'll be 29 at that time. Might be something soon they extend him and boost his coin a bit.

NFL projects salary cap to rise $8-13 million in 2020

he Los Angeles Rams (and the other 31 teams) will have some extra spending money next year thanks to the ever-rising salary cap. According to Ian Rapoport, the NFL has informed every team that the salary cap is projected to be between $196.8 million and $201.2 million.

That’s a rise from the current cap of $188.2 million, meaning it will increase by $8-13 million next year. As Rapoport points out, the cap has risen by 40% since 2015 when it was just $143.3 million.

he NFL informed clubs today that projections for the 2020 salary cap are in the range of $196.8 million to $201.2 million. This marks a 40% increase from five years ago in the 2015 season ($143.3 million).

Over The Cap projects the Rams to have $26 million in cap space next year, which is the ninth-fewest in the NFL. That’s with the cap projected at $200 million, so based on the new information released by the league, the Rams will have between $22.8 million and $27.2 million in cap space next year.

Obviously, that’s not much in comparison to the Colts, who are projected to have more than $105 million in cap space. The Dolphins are also expected to have over $100 million to spend next year. The Rams have players they need to pay, too, led by Cory Littleton.

He’ll be a free agent in 2020, and after seeing the contract Carolina gave Shaq Thompson – four years, $54 million – it’s reasonable to think Littleton’s deal will surpass that. Then there’s Jalen Ramsey, who’s undoubtedly seeking a contract extension, as well as Dante Fowler Jr., who will hit free agency after this season.

The Rams don’t have much money to work with, but with the cap rising and money rolling over after trading away Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, the team has some added flexibility.

Don’t see them cutting Matthews or Weddle after just one year, as we’ve got to be careful after trading Peters and Talib, and that would look bad to other free agents interested in signing with the Rams.
agreed. both were reasonable $$$ contracts

I believe they gave him a bonus during the off season but I agree he hes an awesome player who gives 100% from whistle to whistle. Going to sound like a homer here but I wouldn't trade Woods or Kupp for anyone not named Aaron Donald.

I remember something about that but even with it his cap hit as it stands the next two years is a very affordable $9.17 million he has some escalators and bonuses built in for like another $1.1 million.

I hope he keeps playing like he does and that we can keep him as long as we can. The guys a work horse. I dont really keep up with cap and contract stuff so I didn't know he was under contract for the next 2 seasons so that is good to know but I know 2 years will fly by so hopefully we can afford to keep him when the time comes.

While it’s nice to see a salary cap increase, announcing it early may not be much of an impact considering that teams with larger cap spaces can drop a king’s ransom on some of our FAs

Honestly I don’t know that this changes much. Those teams already could do that.

Weddle will most likely be gone. Hes very slow and with Johnson coming back I believe its Rapp who will replace Weddle. Rapp has already been seen lining up the secondary when in for Weddle, which is a sign to me he will be the starter next year.

Fowler will be gone as well. I love Fowler but I believe Obo can fill in and not even miss a step.

Brockers would have to take a very friendly deal in order to stay, and even then I feel Gaines is in the immediate future for our D line.

Matthew's is cheap and playing like his old self. I could see him staying but also wouldn't be surprised either if they let him go to save money.

Cooks will more than likely be let go due to high cost and inability to stay concussion free. We'll have to eat some money but it will be well worth it If it helps us to resign Littleton, Kupp, Johnson and Ramsey.

Geez how many times do I have to point out to the doubters? The Rams will have the money to extend the key players.

Bubble players likely to be gone in 2020 to clear cap.

NRC - $6M
Brockers - $10.7M
Whitworth - $16.6M
Weddle - $6.2M
Mathews - $3.5M
Brown - $2.1M
Blythe - $2M
Bortles - $1M

Cap Increase est. $15M
Current free cap $8.3M

That's over $68M in free cap next year.

Money to extend Fowler who is already making $12M will only add $3-$4M.
Woods increase won't kick in until 2022.
Kupp will get his increase but it won't kick in until 2021.

The team already has starters for all the guys listed above so their leaving won't be creating holes. Weddle and Mathews are standing in the way of Ebukam and Rapp. Henderson will take over for Brown and they will simply draft a big RB. NRC is over paid for his role. Hill or Williams can play the nickel DB. Boom will replace Whit, which has always been the plan since Noteboom was drafted.

So where is all this doom and gloom over losing players due to money issues coming from? The Rams have done a very good job in managing the cap. IMO their eye has always been on having the home grown team by 2020 without the hired gun vets. The young guys on the o-line exemplifies how well they are building this team.

Well, one thing is clear, you're no accountant. Didn't we have a go around over this CAP issue a few months ago, and then you disappeared for several days ? I'm sorry, but it doesn't look like you have learned much since about how the CAP, dead money, or how to account for lost free agents you want back or those you are turning into CAP casualties. Your version of the 'new-math' is non-sensical. I'd suggest just starting with Spotrac and going from there rather than try to reinvent the wheel.

"Free CAP', that's rich.

You have listed 8 players above who you want gone, but 5 of them have already been calculated as out of the 2020 total CAP as they are soon to become free agents. You count retaining Fowler as $3-$4mil, but he's also already off the 2020 books as he too will also be entering free agency, so you must account for his entirely new CAP #.

Including the 2019 rollover, the Rams are now estimated to have approximately just over $23mil in available CAP for 2020, and this already assumes an $11.mil raise in the overall league per team CAP. This figure accounts for all 41 players who are currently under contract for the Rams in 2020.
What it doesn't count is the cost for signing the new draft class, probably something over $6.mil, and any of those rather expensive or B grade free agents the Rams may want to bring back next year.

Since you have chosen to make CAP Casualties out of Weddle, Matthews & NRC (which I don't necessarily disagree with), you can apply perhaps something near that $12.5mil in CAP savings back towards our total, which is now likely closer to $33-$34mil, but still nowhere near your $68mil. figure.

We've gone over this a ton of times I don't know why I'm even responding but you're counting people's cap hit this year as cuts next year to free up more cap space. Brockers Whitworth Blythe and Bortles aren't on next years salary cap and them not coming back doesn't change how much cap space we have.
