With the 167th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft the Buffalo Bills select:...

  • Carter Coughlin
  • Position LB/Edge
  • Ht./Wt. 6-4 / 245
  • Hometown Eden Prairie, Minn.
  • High School Eden Prairie
1586632094094.png

Coughlin, a product of Eden Prairie, MN and a legacy player at the University of Minnesota, was an anchor on a Gophers team that had their most wins in over a century. Over four seasons, Coughlin recorded 158 total tackles (52 solo, 106 assisted), 22.5 sacks, 40 tackles for loss and eight forced fumbles. He also was awarded second-team All-Big Ten honors in both 2018 and 2019.

Although Coughlin participated at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, he chose to only do the broad jump, vertical jump, and 40-yard dash in addition to measurements. He measured in at 6’3” and 236 pounds, so definitely on the light side for both an end and a linebacker. His arm measurement was only 31 ⅜” as well. Coughlin did run a 4.57 40, which is extremely good.

Coughlin’s tape is fun to watch because it is some of the best Gopher football I’ve seen in my lifetime. On an individual level, he’s extremely quick and had the ability to navigate past man offensive lineman at the college level. His athleticism was apparent as a stand up defensive end/linebacker hybrid.

Coughlin is an extremely smart and instinctual player, as indicated by his forced fumble numbers. He knows how to process plays, keeps his eyes up, and doesn’t often get lost. He also has a high motor and never gives up on plays. His slight frame means that he needs to make up for it with effort, and he’s constantly giving that effort.

Like I said, Coughlin is certainly small, about 20 pounds lighter than most current Vikings defensive ends. That means it’ll be tough for him to keep playing so hard at the next level. Unfortunately, his cover skills aren’t enough to slide him back and play linebacker or safety. He will need to pack on the pounds to have a chance at the next level.

He will also need to work on his technique to stick on an NFL roster. He got by in college on his effort and athleticism, but he had issues using his hands to stack and shed. With his lack of length, he’ll need to use leverage better and learn some more pass rush moves.

With the 169th pick in the 2020 R.O.D. Draft the N.O. Saints select........
Alex Taylor OL SC State

1586647800774.png

Dominating the competition
Typically when observing prospects from small schools, they have to jump off the tape. It shouldn’t take more than a few snaps before they make their presence known. In the case of Alex Taylor, that’s precisely how it goes.

For starters, Taylor would be easy to spot even on an NFL field. He stands tall at 6’9” and has been listed between 305-310 pounds. The mammoth is more than just size, however. It’s rare to see, but Taylor is a human highlight reel of an offensive lineman.

Routinely he wins reps with emphasis. At times Taylor looks like Michael Oher in The Blindside as he topples over opponents and drives them way off the ball. For such a big lineman, naturally, there would lie concerns regarding leverage. However, that comes easy for Taylor. He’s a natural knee bender and does a tremendous job of getting underneath his opponent with tons of power on engagement.

Not to sound cliche, but Taylor is the epitome of a dancing bear. The size is obvious, but where Taylor really impresses is in his movement skills. He sinks well in his hips and moves around the arch with ease. Taylor has shown progression in his pass sets with quickness and depth in his kick slide. His length is one of his best attributes which Taylor uses to his advantage time and time again.

The flashes he’s shown as a pass protector are mightily encouraging. However, he’s even more dominant as a run blocker. It all starts with leverage for Taylor in the ground game. Once he engages his opponent and gets a grip on them, the clamps are turned on. Taylor has exceptional leg drive and holds his form while pushing defenders away from the play. His combination of power and reach makes it easy to open running lanes.

As polished as Taylor may be for a guy who’s only played football for about four or five years, of course, he’s not a finished product. You see Taylor struggle when reacting inside to delayed blitzes. Developing an inside power step would do wonders for his game and that’s something that should come with time and more experience. Taylor has also shown inconsistent grip strength and hand usage.

Despite the rawness in terms of experience, Taylor possesses the unmatched size and physical tools. He’s much further along than you’d expect for a player who has only had football as their sole focus for a few years. Taylor has absolutely dominated the competition over these past two seasons and has played his way to being an NFL Draft pick.

2020 NFL Draft status
Through all of the HBCU/FCS prospects I’ve evaluated thus far, Alex Taylor is the best I’ve seen and has the best chance of getting drafted. Size and athleticism will always draw scouts. However, when you have a quality, improving skillset to go along with that, the sky is the limit.

NFL scouts are sure to have caught wind of Taylor by now. In what is viewed to be a top-heavy offensive line class, Taylor will be a prime project pick in the mid-late rounds. I’d love to see him get a chance to perform at the Senior Bowl this winter and compete against some of the best college football has to offer. That could do wonders for his draft stock and boost his name recognition. Regardless, Taylor is sure to get an invite to some post-season All-Star game.

Saints Draft:

#1. 24 Kenneth Murray LB Oklahoma
#3. 88 Kyle Dugger S Lenoir-Rhyne
#4. 130 Devin Duvernay WR Texas
#5. 169 Alex Taylor OL SC State

With the 171st pick in the ROD mock draft, the Houston Texans select: S/LB Tanner Muse, Clemson

A big-bodied safety, Muse surprisingly functioned primarily as a deep safety in Brent Venables' defensive scheme last season. It’s apparent from studying his film that he plays with a sharp understanding of coverage spacing and knows how to work into throwing windows. He’s a sound zone defender with excellent awareness which is likely why he's often tasked with playing in single high safety looks. Muse does well to read the backfield and cover ground.

While playing so deep off the ball didn’t lead to stand out production, Muse is an impressive athlete for his size and offers a large tackle radius with good contact power. He closes on the football quickly, demonstrating both long speed and short area quickness. He takes clean angles in pursuit and attacks the football with urgency. Muse flashes the ability to use his hands to play off contact and win in pursuit.

Given his physical traits, Muse should get more opportunities to function in man coverage on bigger slots and tight ends. Additionally, Muse's size and strength could lead to opportunities to play closer to the line of scrimmage in more of an attacking role. Should he achieve these opportunities, Muse has the upside to illustrate a more versatile and complete skill set.

Texans Draft so far:
2. J.K Dobbins
3. Lloyd Cushenberry III
3. Donovan Peoples-Jones
3. Netane Muti
4. Alex Highsmith
5. Tanner Muse

Thank you! It was a hard direction of which way to go with the Jags since they have so many needs. I wasn't sure what to do as far as strategy.

I decided stay with Menshew and build the OL and DL around him unless there is a amazing BPA there. Everybody else took those BPA's before I could so stayed true and finding some gems in the secondary now. Maybe not Ramsey talent of course but with a good draft next year could hunker down some top tier talent.

I forgot to put my safety in there to! lol

2 great 3rd round picks I was going to take before you got to them in Cushenberry and Muti. Was thinking he'd get to the 4th.
It appears he logged on earlier today , should we wait or make some suggestions?

Let's wait. Maybe he will get on soon.

I like your draft and draft strategy. I like Menshew as well. I think he'll develop pretty well, especially as he is surrounded with more overall talent on his team.

@sdakotaram has been on line viewing other threads for an hour or so. I've sent him a pm but no pick yet. I say we make it and move on. The Pats need an edge and Nick Coe from Auburn is still available.

Thoughts?
