Snead talks Rams franchise tag candidates, free agents at NFL Combine

Stu Jackson
STAFF WRITER

INDIANAPOLIS –A pair of important deadlines loom for the Rams and their key free agents.
General manager Les Snead is aiming to get those situations resolved sooner rather than later, but the organization will take its time with those decisions.
Speaking to a group of reporters at the NFL Combine Tuesday afternoon, Snead provided updates on where things stand with inside linebacker Cory Littleton, outside linebacker Dante Fowler Jr and left tackle Andrew Whitworth, as well as players who are entering the final year of their contract in 2020.

Littleton and Fowler
The most immediate decision the Rams face is whether they want to use the franchise tag, and if so, who they want to use it on. L.A. last used the franchise tag in 2018 on former safety Lamarcus Joyner, but it has two candidates in Littleton and Fowler.
Both linebackers are pending free agents – Littleton for the first time and and Fowler for the second time in as many years – and in position to command lucrative deals this offseason based on their play in 2019. Littleton expressed a desire to return to the Rams toward the end of the season.

Snead's preference is to find a long-term solution rather than the short-term fix afforded by a franchise tag.

"We would always love to get things done before, try not to use the tag because that can become more of a short-term type decision, but it doesn't mean that you do," Snead said. "Technically, I think you try to work to the deadline to get something done with the players you want to get done, and then from there, as it gets closer, decide is it best to utilize that or not. I don't think it would be, 'alright, day one, we're putting the tag on someone.' This free agency, the puzzle is a little more complicated but definitely manageable. And then adding the fact that new coordinators are in, some tweaks to scheme, really taking our time to work through which positions and which players playing those positions are the most important to help us moving forward."

Whether the Rams can keep one or both may depend on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported last week that the NFL and NFLPA agreed to push back the franchise tag window from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27, with the deadline to apply the tag now set for March 12. However, if players approve the current proposed CBA – which has already been approved by owners – Pelissero reported in a follow-up tweet that teams would go back to being able to use only one tag, instead of both the franchise and transition tag this year. The league and NFLPA reps are meeting in Indianapolis this evening to discuss it after the NFLPA executive committee voted, 6-5, not to recommend the current CBA proposal, according to Pelissero.

"We have a franchise and a transition available right now, right," Snead said during his podium session. "There hasn't been a collective bargaining agreement so I think at that point we're still going through a lot of things, trying to determine the best strategy to get as many of our good football players who've helped us win a lot of games over the last three years back. That's always impossible but having those tools in the tool box definitely allows you to try to accomplish that."

Andrew Whitworth
Free agency officially opens March 18th at 1 p.m. pacific time, but Snead is aiming to have a contract done beforehand.

"He would go in the same boat, in that the goal would be to do something before the bell rings for free agency, with Whit and all the players that we want back," Snead said.
Timeline for Kupp, Johnson and Ramsey extensions?

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp, safety John Johnson III and cornerback Jalen Ramsey's contract are all set to expire after the coming season, but that doesn't mean new deals and extensions aren't on Snead's mind for them.

Snead said the organization has long preferred getting ahead of these details, but its focus will first be on the pending free agents whose contracts expired after the 2020 season, then shifting that urgency to players in situations like Kupp, Johnson and Ramsey.

"You have to take it in process, but strategically we've always enjoyed checking that box for not only us, but for the player so that we all know, OK, we're here together and we're working toward the same goals for a long time," Snead said.

As for Ramsey, Snead hopes he'll be in a Rams uniform for a long time. "There's really no timeline on that, like when the deal gets done, at this point," Snead said. "But we'd definitely like to have Jalen helping the Rams for more than just the 2020 season."

NFL combine 2020 results: A.J. Epenesa, Marlon Davidson winners as edge rushers and defensive linemen weigh in

It was a big day on the scales for some of the top offensive line prospects, but Chase Young didn't impress

by Chris Trapasso

Chase Young, Derrick Brown, Javon Kinlaw and the rest of the edge rushers and defensive linemen weighed in at the 2020 NFL Combine on Wednesday morning, and we saw a plethora of trench players with loads of length.

Edge rusher winners

Khalid Kareem, Notre Dame. Being 268 may hurt his ability to test well, but he was noticeably more compact with much longer arms than his edge-rusher teammate Julian Okwara. And Kareem is a power player on the outside who knows how to use his hands to win at the point of attack.
What's the latest news from the NFL combine? Brady Quinn, Pete Prisco, Ryan Wilson and Jamey Eisenberg get you caught up on everything you need to know on the Pick Six Podcast. Listen below and be sure to subscribe for daily NFL goodness.

D.J. Wonnum, South Carolina. The high-energy outside rusher measured in with a great profile at nearly 6-5 and over 250 pounds with the longest wingspan in his position group.

A.J. Epenesa, Iowa. We all expected Epenesa to have some monstrous numbers at the weigh-in, and he did. His figures, across the board, were more impressive than Chase Young's and not far off from Myles Garrett's three years ago.

Yetur Gross-Matos, Penn State. At 6-5 and 266, the Penn State star looks like a traditional defensive end. Add in his nearly 35-inch arms, and you have a towering presence on the outside.

K'Lavon Chaisson, LSU. Chaisson was listed at 6-4 and 250 pounds, and if there are any clear-cut concerns about him, it's that he's not imposing physically. To bulk up close to 255 -- instead of being under his listed weight like many prospects are -- with a wingspan over 79 inches led to a huge weigh in for Chaisson.

Terrell Lewis, Alabama. On film, Lewis looks a little lanky. No one will be calling him that anymore at over 6-5 and 262. He has vines for arms too, which is very helpful around the edge. His 83 4/8 inch wingspan was the second-longest of the edge rusher group.

Edge rusher losers

Kenny Willekes, Michigan State. As someone who doesn't look explosive on film, coming in close to 265 is worrisome for Willekes. Also, arms below 32 inches? Not great, although he does know how to use them.

Kendall Coleman, Syracuse. Weighing in close to 260 was a good development for Coleman, who looked smaller than that on film. But his wingspan was the shortest of the group. He is a technician, and typically has a pass-rush plan, yet his lack of length will scare some teams away.

Chase Young, Ohio State. This is similar to Joe Burrow being a "loser" during his weigh in. Neither labels in this portion of the combine are anywhere close to being deal-breakers. While nearly 6-4 and 265 equates to a sturdy defensive end (nearly identically sized to Gross-Matos), Young's arms weren't as long as some of the other bigger, taller edge rushers at this year's combine.

Darrell Taylor, Tennessee. Taylor added eight pounds since the Senior Bowl, and for an edge rusher with heavy hands yet lacking burst, the increased weight raises at least a tiny red flag.

Raequan Williams6-430833 3/8"78 6/8"
Rob Windsor6-4 4/829033 1/8"79"

Defensive line winners

Marlon Davidson, Auburn. Davidson's conversion from edge rusher at Auburn to defensive tackle in the NFL continues. He weighed in at 297 at the Senior Bowl and is now up to 303. He was a lower-level athlete on the outside in college yet used his hands well and had plenty of power. He could prove to be one of the most dynamic athletes at defensive tackle in this year's draft.

Ross Blacklock, TCU. Blacklock weighed in at only 290 pounds, which to some means he's a little small, especially being over 6-3. But I'm listing him as a winner because the lighter weight should help him during on-field drills over the weekend.

Benito Jones, Ole Miss. The active nose tackle weighed in at 6-1 and 313, so he'll look the part. Add in a gargantuan wingspan of nearly 84 inches and you have quite the compact yet lengthy interior disruptor.

Justin Madubuike, Texas A&M. At nearly 6-3 and 293 pounds, Madubuike is in line to test very well in the explosion drills. Also, his 80-plus inch wingspan checks the box in that department.

Defensive line losers

Khalil Davis, Nebraska. His height and weight were fine. The wingspan under 75 inches was not. He'll have problems controlling interior blockers in the NFL.

Josiah Coatney, Ole Miss. Like his teammate Jones, Coatney is a high motor nose tackle with some juice up the field. Having short arms will limit him to a certain degree on Sundays.

Olonilua is officially at 6'3", 234 lbs. I'm getting S-Jax lite vibes, especially because Olonilua is good on third down.

Huge fan of Blacklock and Fotu's weigh-ins.

Muti weighed in at over 310 (don't recall the exact weight). If he can have his special movement abilities to go along with that weight, he's not going to last to our picks.

I bet the Raiders are looking at Jacob Eason
If I were them I'd be all over Jordan Love. I think he's underrated. Move up if you need to and grab that dude.

Can't wait to watch the receivers in particular, given how much impact this stuff has on their draft spot. Even though it's not a big need, boy that group is talented.
This receiver class is so ridiculously talented and deep, I don't see how the Rams don't grab one.

I think Tyler Johnson is going to have mediocre combine measurables and fall in the NFL draft. He'd be a perfect target with the Rams' picks. He isn't even running the 40 now, so I think his agent probably knew it was a bad idea.

Brandon Aiyuk and Tyler Johnson are my prospect crushes for the receiving class (not going to count Jeudy, Ruggs, Shenault, or Reagor; they'll be way long gone before we pick.)

He'd be a nice add for our WR room. I do think WR is a need for the Rams, not a top need but they could really use another young route runner/fit for this offense.

I wouldn't rule out WR at 52 either btw. Rams boards might riot but yeah I could see it happening since the depth at the top could very easily slide us a round 1 talent.

Check out Aiyuk. He's one of those guys on my list that I'd pull a fuckin hamstring sprinting to the podium if he's on the board at 52. :D
Johnson, Jefferson and Cephis for me. I’m curious where they end up being drafted.
