This is the part of this draft when it becomes very apparent that the Rams should be able to pick up some pretty good talent with that 3rd and three 4ths.

Exactly. McVay and staff already knew what we figured out. This draft is deep at LB, CB, Edge, RB, OL..

Scouting Report: Ryan Izzo
2018 NFL Mock Draft
DraftGeek’s Mock Draft
School:
Florida State Position: Tight End Class: Junior Height: 6-6 Weight: 220 lbs Projected Draft Round: 3-5

Scouting Report:
A big bodied, blocking tight end that has shown soft hands when asked to contribute in the run game. With a dearth of tight ends that can block, the more he can show in terms of pass catching skills, the more his draft stock will rise. Shows good technique catching the ball away from his body. Doesn’t have much speed, but can make separation with posting up and blocking out defenders.

Carlton Davis III came into his own as a junior. He actually earned a starting spot as a true freshman in 2014, coming off a high school career after which he was named one of the top 25 recruits out of the talent-laden state of Florida (in addition to being a fine track athlete, a district 100- and 200-meter dash finalist). In 2015, Davis was a Freshman All-SEC selection, starting nine of 13 games, making 56 tackles, two for loss, while leading the team with three interceptions and breaking up eight others. He played through injuries as a sophomore, starting 10 of 12 games played and breaking up 10 passes (46 stops, two for loss). Davis was a first-team All-SEC pick in 2017, starting 13 games, making 36 stops, intercepting one pass, and leading the Tigers with 11 pass breakups. He suffered a concussion in the SEC Championship Game and missed the Peach Bowl with an illness.

Overview

Davis' combination of height, weight, length and ball skills make him a nuisance that college wide receivers could do without on Saturdays. Davis has some struggles mirroring routes in space and is best as a full-time press corner who is able to use his length and strength to take wideouts out of their game. Davis plays with confidence and some edge and was able to show and prove against NFL-caliber talent over the last three years. In the right scheme, he could become a high-impact starter.

Strengths

  • Outstanding size and length
  • Bigger and longer than the average NFL cornerback with arms that dangle down his size
  • Parks himself in front of receivers in press coverage and uses wingspan to jam and blanket opponents
  • Slow releasing receivers will get owned
  • Crowds and bulls wideouts into the boundary
  • Searches for incoming throws once receiver makes his break
  • Tremendously disruptive
  • Plays high or low side of the route and attacks the throw with relentless timing and aggression
  • Had double-digit passes defensed in each of his three seasons
  • Hands are like garden rakes dragging the football away from the receiver
  • Extremely difficult to feather touch throws over him downfield
  • Has experience guarding extremely athletic and talented targets in the SEC
Weaknesses
  • Can be goaded out of early press positioning by fakes
  • Plays upright in space
  • Slow to hit brakes and challenge comeback routes
  • Long-strider in short spaces
  • Off-man can be a struggle
  • Transitions are spotty unless he reads the pattern
  • Sometimes stumbles and loses balance checking complex routes
  • Unable to mirror and match from a backpedal
  • Extremely grabby at the top of the route
  • Tugs on jerseys as recovery tactic
  • Six pass interference penalties in 2017
  • Opportunistic angles on the throw leave him susceptible to big plays when he misses
  • Takes inconsistent angles as tackler
  • Needs more fundamental strike and wrap approach

CHRIS HERNDON | Miami (Fla.) 6036 | 253 lbs. | SR. Norcross, Ga. (Norcross) 2/23/1996 (age 22.2) #23

BACKGROUND: A three-star tight end recruit out of high school, Christopher “Chris” Herndon IV was basketball-focused most of his life, but football emerged as his best sport, especially after he transferred from Meadowcreek to Norcross as a junior. He recorded 33 catches for 543 yards and six touchdowns as a senior, helping lead Norcross (teammates with Georgia’s Lorenzo Carter) to the Georgia 6A State Championship in 2013. Herndon was ranked as a top-20 tight end recruit in the country and committed to Miami (Fla.) over Mississippi State and Western Kentucky. After not recording any stats as a true freshman, he started three games as a sophomore, posting 18 catches for 237 yards and one score. Herndon shared the tight end duties with David Njoku in 2016 and finished with 28 receptions for 334 yards and two touchdowns. He became the clear starter as a senior and recorded 40 catches for 477 yards and four touchdowns over the first 11 games before a season-ending injury, earning Second Team All-ACC honors. Herndon was invited to the 2018 Senior Bowl, but was unable to participate due to injury.

PRO DAY N/A

STRENGTHS: Quality body thickness with core strength…graceful athlete with loose body control…fluid route-runner and doesn’t run stiff…reliable hands-catcher to pluck…adjusts to the football like a wide receiver, bailing out inaccurate throws…athletic YAC threat, efficiently transitioning from pass-catcher to ballcarrier…not an easy player to get on the ground…athletic feet to move laterally and quickly recover in pass protection, shielding the pocket from rushers…versatility allowed the coaches to play him at fullback, wide receiver and tight end…graduated with a degree in sociology (Dec. 2017)…described as a “humble leader” by his coaches…set career-bests as a senior before his injury.

WEAKNESSES: Physical build, but doesn’t always play like it…needs to do a better job powering through road blocks mid-route…too much of a finesse finisher, preferring to go around defenders instead of lowering his pads and barreling through contact…needs to add glass to his diet as a blocker, lacking the aggressive nature desired…get-in-the-way pass blocker, lacking the sustain skills to shut down defenders…draft grade will hinge on the medical reports after season-ending surgery to repair the MCL in his left knee (Nov. 2017).

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Miami (Fla.), Herndon lined up as the “Y” tight end in the Hurricanes’ offense, lining up inline, detached and in the backfield as a fullback. He moved to the top of the tight end depth chart after David Njoku left early for the NFL and responded with a career-season over the first 11 games, helping Miami go undefeated when he was healthy. Herndon was at his best on bubble screens and underneath routes where he could snatch and use his athleticism to create in space. His sweet feet allow him to move laterally and stay in position as a blocker, but he needs to get stronger and tougher as a finisher, both as a blocker and receiver. Overall, Herndon is coming off a serious knee injury, but if healthy, he has the athletic profile and blocking potential to grow into a versatile Delanie Walker type of role.

GRADE: 3rd-4th Round
