It’s not an either/or question, though. We could have a shortage of pass rushers AND also be playing too soft in coverage.

Indeed, I’ve seen both. I’ve seen plays in which AD gets double or triple teamed, the QB takes his time, and nobody else breaks through.

I’ve also seen a lot of plays in which a QB takes two steps back and fires a pass to a WR who, due to the CB lining up 10 or more yards off the LOS, never is challenged.

Our offense needs the help of turnovers. I think Morris needs to be more aggressive and try to force some.

AND we should get more pass rushers this offseason.
What I have been saying all season.

What stat I would really like to see to know if it is our imagination or not is time to get throw off by a QB stat

I would think the majority of throws by the opposing QB is 2.0 secs or less the way our defense is playing soft coverages.

The only time I see us pressure the QB or get a sack is when we play the rare press coverage.

But then again if we played against Evans as the OL, we would be able to get to the QB in 1.5 secs.

I asked in the vent thread I'll ask again in reply to this one. Who was the last edge rusher that McSnead draft that was worth a damn? The defense was amazing last year once we added the pass rusher in Von. We let him go, didn't replace him and now everybody thinks Morris is stupid. When was the last time McSnead drafted an edge that turned out to be worth a damn?
John Franklin-Myers' / I though he played good for the Rams. I don't know why they got rid of.

1. I never thought we'd be here again this soon.

2. Three games under .500. Seriously?

3. Intellectually, its not difficult to understand what has happened this year.

4. Injuries to the OL have been catastrophic. There's no way to overstate how insanely impactful the loss of starters and backups has been.

5. This game revealed another problem. John Wolford is not an NFL quarterback. Not as a number 2 guy. Probably not even a number 3 guy.

6. Here's the profile I want for our backup: a smart, experienced, NFL veteran. Like... say... Colt McCoy.

7. Or, if you want a different look, how about a young, athletic QB who can provide a dual threat.

8. Wolford isn't either of those things. He's inaccurate from the pocket, he's not a quick release guy, and he's not athletic enough to pressure the defense with his legs.

9. Going into this Wolford as the No. 2 was irresponsible. There, I said it.

10. Looking at the defense, I'm torn. They are being put in an impossible situation due to the lack of offense, but I can't fully absolve them when they continue to miss key tackles, allow big catches on third down and in the Red Zone, and fail to produce turnovers.

11. I still think that part of the defense's problem is Raheem Morris' continual reluctance to let the defense pressure opposing offenses with press coverage. I know that Jalen Ramsey has backed Morris recently, but can every observer who has made this point be wrong?

12. Cooper Kupp's nightmare afternoon ended early. I'm expecting words like "high ankle sprain" and "IR" to be heard this week. Injury added to insult added to injury...

13. Can this season get any worse?

14. So here's my random potential overreaction thought: the Rams may need to part with one of their prize superstars this offseason to allow for a rebuilding of the foundation of the team (i.e. the OL and, to a lesser extent, the RB position).

15. So who would I consider sacrificing? Scratch Matthew Stafford and Aaron Donald off the list. Same with Cooper Kupp.

16. Ramsey, maybe? Not out of the question. He's a great player, but he could be a luxury we can't afford. Not when a 28 year old all-pro CB (who has a market value contract in place) could fetch multiple premium draft picks. And not when his talents, vast though they are, are arguably being wasted.

17. I'm not even sure I believe what I just wrote. I'm just frustrated. Perhaps, though, it's not entirely crazy.

18. As I look back at last year, I realize just how many things went right. Overall, we had good health. We found amazing replacements for those who did get hurt. The ball bounced our way in many key moments. That's how a championship season happens.

19. This year is the polar opposite. Our karma has run out, Murphy's Law has taken over, and its hard to see any light at the end of this year's tunnel.

20. I'm still here, though. And I'll be here every week.
Colt McCoy did good this game, but he had 2 major things that Wolford didn't, time and open receivers. I get Wolford did a bad job, and McCoy is the better qb, but he had a fairly more ideal situation to work in. Not fair to praise McCoy and shit on Wolford, especially when you admitted yourself that our coverage was soft.

No, I can do both. Wolford missed open receivers on several plays, and he showed poor pocket presence.

Well I think Donald retires during the off season. He said he only wanted to play 8 years, this is his 9th and he only came back to win back to back which won't happen. I think it's time to blow the defense up and trade Ramsey and move on from Wagner. That will free up plenty of salary cap they can use to start building the defense again. Hopefully someone will hire Morris to be head coach. Let's hope. I think we see an entirely new Defense next year.

I think you start with Stafford at QB, Hav at RT, Cupp and Jefferson at WR, and Allen at C. Maybe Williams at RB. Henderson is a free agent and probably won't be back. Dump Akers. This team will look very different next year.

Tough game. Even tougher season. The only thing I can think of that will be beneficial is the idea that McVay will be ANGRY all offseason. He doesn’t strike me a someone who will walk away when things get tough. This season will be a very teachable moment for him. This is a losing season, guys. Let’s face it, it’s over. But I think there’s a good chance we right the ship during free agency and the off-season. Let’s see.
I have my doubts about coach.

We could be playing soft because we don't have corners that are good playing tighter press coverage and we don't have a good pass rush. It is possible Morris and his staff are all good coaches they just don't have the players to excel in the defense he wants to play. We just don't know. It could be that Morris went to bat for these players and they aren't performing like they have in the past or they should or how the coaches think they're capable of performing. We just don't know.

In the mean time we're stuck with massive hyperbole about our opponent and our players along with character/personal attacks on our coaches and players from those of us that sit in our reclyners being arm chair football genuises, myself at the front of the arm chair pack so I'm attacking anybody with this.

I just find it extremely hard to believe that first paragraph.

We have almost all of our defensive players back from injury and we are still playing that style.

I’m not here to respond to every comment made by other people on other threads.

I’ve made my points, and provided support (just because you think win rate rankings are bogus does not mean everyone else has to disregard them). If you disagree with something I’ve said, fine. We can discuss it, or simply agree to disagree.

I don’t care about the hyperbole spouted by armchair geniuses that apparently has gotten your dander up. Argue with them elsewhere.

We lost Daeyon and William# two huge factors in our secondary. We lost Von as a pass rusher. Those players affected the type of defense we could call last year on our way to winning the super bowl with this same DC. Something a few of have been pointing our for month#, we dont have the personnel to run the defense you want.

You can believe what you want and keep attacking Morris’ intelligence and abili but it’s a simple fact we don’t have the players like we did last year.

Daeyon? Really??

Williams maybe but he had a bad year last year.

Miller hurt but we still had a high number of sacks and pressures before Miller.

2 Players really don't make that huge of a difference. I just can't believe that. It hurts but to go from a top 5 team in sacks and pressures to a bottom 10 team due to losing 1 very good player and 1 okay player? No just no. And then we get a top middle linebacker.

Again No just No.

Something is wrong this year and it all boils down to scheme.

Whenever we play press on a pass play, the other team has time after time has usually not done well.

Go look at the games again. I have.

However, when we blitz we almost always have 4 DBs 7 to 10 yards back and the QB gets rid of the ball in 1.5 seconds. It is just not working.

The 3 and outs we get are almost entirely when we use press on a play or two during the series. ALmost never when we play soft.

Daeyon didn’t play one snap at CB in the playoffs, and he played only 10 games in the regular season.

And where the frick have I attacked Morris ability and intelligence other than that last drive against TB. You really make things up.

I disagree with his scheme because I really believe we could be better if he mixes in more press and less soft coverage.

He can design a defense because I have seen it. I am just disappointed that he has gone the really safe route this year.

This is one of the most telling reasons why we have lost so many games. We never get turnovers. Even when we force the ball out, the football gods put the ball back in the offenses hands. I literally cannot remember our last caused turnover. The numbers don't lie either. We have 6 on the year, tied for worst with the awful Raiders defense. We also have the 3rd worst turnover ratio, as we have given the ball to the other team 15 times, over double the amount we have taken. Teams with this ratio don't win.

I'm not sure how you address this with the team, but, I have to think playing with a huge cushion on the WR's nearly every play (yesterday they actually played press some) has to contribute. Especially with the amount of games we play against QB's who prefer to get the ball out quick to short routes. You really have to adjust your schemed to each team, week to week. I'm not sure Morris has done that effectively.

Three players and yes Daeyon. He was better last year than anybody we’ve run out at CB other than Ramsey and Williams was better than Daeyon. Add in the loss of Von and those three make a huge difference to a D. The drop from Daeyon and Williams to the young CB is large.

nobody myself included likes all the soft coverages. I’m used to the hyperbole being over the top now though. I also was thinking Long from last year whos missed time this year and not been the same.

Sorry thinking Long from the playoffs who was better last year as our third. We desperately have missed Williams though we’re finally gettingHill back which as has been said helps the soft coverages. So we’re getting ther3 with coverage. Never going to replicate the pass rush though to change the overall scheme success.

I believe Hill is a good replacement for Williams so basically the only real change was Wagner over Reeder and losing Miller and having Lewis instead of Miller

I feel like they offset somewhat and we should be doing the same defense like last year. Maybe we wouldn't betop 10 in sacks and pressures but I have to believe out turnovers would be better than 1 in 6 games

Hill has played two games due to injury so really it was a bunch of rookies and a second year guy in our #2 and #3 cb role. That’s a huge difference. And in no world does Wagner come close to offsetting Vons pass rush.
If we had actually replaced Von and if Hill was healthy we aren’t likely to be discussing Morris and the D. This has been my point the whole year. We all wanted Wagner to transform the d but honestly he’s a slow shell of his former self. Add to that Hollins, Lewis and guys like Garrett just aren’t holding up their end.

side note this iPad keyboard is annoying. So many times I want a t and end up with a 5.

Not fair to praise McCoy and shit on Wolford

Go back and look at the game again. Wolford didn't see some open receivers. At times he looked lost. His lack of height showed in his play. He's never been accurate beyond 10 yards. He's a dink and dunk QB and the Cards know that. So they simply took away his quick reads, and wouldn't allow him to roll out. His lack of arm strength really showed when he tried to throw to the sidelines. His passes floated out there instead of being driven. Go back and look at his mechanics, and arm strength and the things he didn't see (open receivers). Wolford is a JAG. It's very likely he's out of the NFL within 2 years.
