Nice narrative but the reality is slightly different from my perspective. The Niners held on to Jimmy G for a reason that makes perfect sense. They are going to start a rookie QB with a ton of potential. Learning to read defenses in the NFL is a very steep learning curve for QBs who haven't played as a pocket passer, reading defenses in college.

The Niners want to be competitive this coming season. I think they want insurance Jimmy G provides if Lance struggles badly in camp or during the season. Rather than destroy his confidence they would sit him down and allow him to develop another season. Remember Josh Allen took a couple of years to blossom.

The other factor complicating Jimmy G's trade is his health issue. Teams were wary about Jimmy's injuries to his thumb and throwing shoulder. He had surgery on both and they were successful. The problem is he won't be able to throw for 4 months, i.e. until after TCs start. So once he proves he's fine in TC his market will be much greater. It also provides them time to continue to evaluate Lance's progress. I for one am not sleeping on Lance. He doesn't look like a bust to me, rather if the Niners don't rush him, he can be a franchise-level player for them. He had a high ceiling in the draft but also the caveat that he was raw and needed time to develop. This is exactly the same type of evaluation Josh Allen had and now he's looking like he will be an elite QB.

If Lance validates the Niner's confidence in him during TC then the team will have a market for a healthy Jimmy G either leading up to the draft or during it for teams who miss out on their targeted prospect. In other words the Jimmy G story isn't finished and neither is Trey Lance's and the Niners were right in not pressing the issue on either.

Unless Lance is a bust and they can’t get good value for JimmyG, which is an entirely possible outcome.

Reality is actually that if Trey Lance isn’t ready to play this season everything they did to acquire him was a colossal failure. They should have put Lance in the lineup after Jimmy got banged up against the Titans. Maybe they don’t make the playoffs but they would have known exactly what they had in Lance. No matter what level Lance performs at in preseason this year they still won’t know. You don’t send two number 1 picks out for a guy you can’t take the training wheels off. By holding on to Jimmy and his 25 million cap charge they haven’t been able to fully address their biggest weaknesses in the secondary and the offensive line in free agency. Most teams are set at QB now so the limited market they had for Jimmy is gone. If they stubbornly decide to hold on to Jimmy then Lance will be looking over his shoulder every time he makes a mistake. The Niners made a bold decision to improve their QB situation and followed it up with being scared to actually play him when their QB was playing injured.

Lance has a strong but inaccurate arm and has slow processing skills like Jared Goff-- I think he's bust potential the 49ers pissed off the football gods. It's been over 30 years since the last time the 49ers had an elite NFL franchise QB, Joe Montana)))

You could have said the same thing about Josh Allen after his first season. Teams don't draft QBs in the first round simply to give up on them so easily.

Josh Allen is not a bad comparison. There is/was a lot more projection with Lance, attempting half the college passes, but their scouting reports read the same.

However, there is a lot of smoke swirling around Lance that doesn’t sound good, i.e. not ready. Thats a lot of picks to keep waiting.

First, nobody said anything about giving up on Lance.

Second, Allen started 11 games as a rookie, and still did not start playing at a consistently high level until year 3.

Lance started 2 games last year. The 49ers don’t know what they have yet. They spent a lot of draft capital and, at the same time, likely diminished JimmyG’s trade value by holding on to him.

If they had gone to the Super Bowl last year, or if Lance becomes the next Allen, everyone would/will forgive this unusual approach. If not, they’re going to be strongly criticized (just as our approach would have been had it failed).

Let’s hope they don’t get vindicated!

I don’t know what you think is off about the ‘narrative’. The Niners were trying to trade Garapolo. That was the plan. For some odd reason they thought his recent success would impress teams enough to give up a first or second round pick. While everyone else was saying a fourth.

The reality is Garapolo is a weak armed QB with a bad shoulder who is a good leader, supposedly. For a fourth it is better to just keep him as insurance, but at some point they need to play Lance regularly. I’d bet if they make Lance the starter Garapolo will request a trade or release next summer. Insurance gone.

IDK, I never liked Steve Young, but he was pretty good, but I hope Trey Lance can't dance and ends up playing Quarterback in France.

F the whiners. Deebo was acting all tough saying they like to punch the Rams in the face. I LOVED seeing him get blown up going over the middle and thankfully the refs got it right and didn't penalize a clean hit. Loved seeing him cry after losing. Good player but he talked sh*t and deserved that ending.

I have a lot of whiners fans who threw a victory party (before the game was played) and I didn't go. The next day, none of them could look me in the eye. LOL
That’s whiner fans. They are cocky before the game and full of excuses after the game. They are confident enough to bet on a game but not man enough to pay up when they lose.

Great topic!

CRAZY! The storylines would look so different.

So many what-if’s… what if Cleveland doesn‘t release OBJ? Do we make the SB? Do we win the SB with Skowronek full time in his place?

I think it was @Mojo Ram who made the point about Matt Ryan… how his standing in the league would look so different had they held onto the 28-3 lead vs the Patriots in SB-51.

You can play that game, but it was Jalen RAMSey who went to Robert Woods & ask him to talk & ok OBj to become a Ram. —That is fact.

OBj was going to be a Packer & that is why after GB beat The Rams for there 3rd loss in a row Matt Lafleur face OBj a big hug. I won’t be surprised if he becomes a Packer either.. that is to be continued.(can talk about how that effected things).

There was a poster this week talking about Jalen RAMSEY not being a team leader. When Robinson signed he knew Jalen RAMsey & said Donte Fowler liked the culture. Van Jefferson went to the same HS,but different years.Still there both tight around that community & what that means to both of them.

Say what you want, but I was in front of that Chargers stadium in Carson & saw Robert Woods mother meet The Rams family & introduce herself as Robert Woods mother.Saying how proud she was & could actually walk from there.I think his dad was there ,maybe saying they were the parents as well? That was a special day for me.
I got tickets & drank 3 Heineken’s(bottles) before going in & had got a free mobile ticket & quickly with that Charger group. It’s SAD Robert Woods Dad Died SuperBowl week & with that he is no longer a Ram.To the points as well. ROBERT WOODS got hurt the next day after OBj so maybe ROBERT WOODS doesn’t get hurt. You see how fast things change in LIFE!!

Being on The Rams side Front(3rd) row 50 yard line & 2 pints . Shula kisses his wife & kids in front of me & Mcvay hugs Tru Johnson because he was the Rams 2 time Franchise Player.

Les Snead is on the right side of the sideline. I watch Goff & the 1st. Team offense come off the sideline. Whitworth going to the far left back of the bench & sidelines. John Sullivan right there. Jared Goff goes right over there & gives him a love plus a few words. Roger Saffold lost & upset at himself kneeling down at the 50 yard line behind players on the sidelines.Rob Hav & J.Brown looking lost.

Big Whit & Robert Woods took The Rams to 2 SuperBowls. Now The Rams are still in a position to compete at the highest level still. Never understood The Rams are all in concept. F” the 9ers!!!

Seven straight 49ers victories over the Rams but losing the NFC title game at SoFi Stadium to the hated rivals Sean would have a hard time getting past that.
We would've all had a hard time getting over that. I just hope that was the beginning of us having their number!! F**k the Whiners!!

I don't know how good Lance will be.....or if Garappolo will even be traded. But in any event, I think we're back in the thick of this rivalry where a split is a win and a sweep is a rarity.
