he doesn't learn. why McVay, why?
I think its because he is too much of a good guy, he doesnt want to run the score up or embarrass a fellow HC. If I were in McVays shoes with a shiny new 1st rd draft pick QB, I'd be looking ways to get up by as much as possible the 1st 3 qtrs then rest Stafford and let Simpson do mop up duty. Not sure how to get Stafford on board with sitting the 4th qtr, but some kind of reward for going in to the 4th qtr with a 28 point lead. Maybe bring Stafford his favorite breakfast every morning for the following week.

Great post. I cannot believe how good Adams looks - he may have 2 or 3 good years left in him after this.

Not finishing games is a culture/McVay problem. He's too fucking conservative. I worry this may never change.

Forbes is very polarizing - I think he has tremendous skills and a great attitude, but something isn't clicking upstairs yet.

And I have no idea why he holds onto guys like Smith and WHittington, who are JAG (or maybe even less), and will never be anything more than that.
You can't fix stupid.

#7 I don’t understand why Xavier Smith was handed a job before the preseason even started. I understand giving him a second chance after his crucial muff in the NFC Championship game. What I don’t understand was giving him a free pass to not even have to compete for a roster spot. He sat out the entire preseason when he could have been working on catching punts in live action and returning kickoff's. He’s been terrible in both categories in the regular season and looks so lost out there trying to just catch punts. He will either run up to catch a punt and then back off at the last second and let the ball bounce in front of him or he’ll catch the ball inside the 5 yard line instead of letting it go in the end zone for a touchback. Retuning punts is difficult. He simply has no confidence in himself and it shows. It’s almost like his vision is off. I hold my breath every time he tries to return a punt. McVay’s vision of certain players is blinded to an extent. He likes to talk about what a great individual a person is. A good teammate etc. Special teams coaches getting fired yearly for the Rams yet guys like Xavier Smith has somehow stuck around for 3 years without any significant contributions.

#9 Emmanuel Forbes- Washington bit the bullet and released Forbes 2 years after they used a FIRST ROUND PICK on him. They saw enough of him to determine that they would rather pay him NOT TO PLAY for them. Snead picked him up and considering how poor the Rams secondary was it seemed like a worthy gamble. He’s been terrible for 2 years but somehow has a roster spot. I think it’s hilarious that he wears the number 1 just like previous RAMS SUPERSTAR Derrion ( I CANT COVER ANYONE) KENDRICK. One of the two couldn’t run, cover anyone, and was known for his ability to collect unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. The other can run like a deer, can’t cover, can’t tackle. The one common denominator between the two #1’s was the empty space between their ears that made them both so untrustworthy that you couldn’t even hide them on special teams.

They didn't get as much pressure in the second half, in the thin Denver air.

The Rams always seemed to be the better conditioned team in years past. Travel and thin air in two early games haven't helped.
This really could be the complete explanation for the 2nd half. Maybe they were gassed; it's not something players would be fully aware of in real time.

We are getting no interior pressure from the D tackles. If that doesn’t change we are looking at a losing season. We are going to give up more big leads if the pass rush doesn’t improve greatly.

Good OP post.

Rams need to be peddle to the metal for 60 minutes every game. change personnel if you have a lead but never play soft, prevent, never. If you have a lead and it's 4th quarter you keep the peddle down! Always !..... Always!
This is Mcvay weak spot. It Burns US over and over

This is what I believe the problem is also. Was at the game and we just weren't getting enough pressure on Nix IMO. Mile High was awesome, so loud, great environment for the home team and definitely gives Denver a home field advantage. Rams had numerous communication issues throughout the game.

Once again... we'd have a sweet "celebration thread" going if it weren't for special teams.
We are in the BOTTOM of the league in this category. You just simply can't keep giving your O a long field to march down, and your D a short field to defend. It's too much. Bubba was supposed to fix this problem, but it's almost just as bad as '25 if not worse.
This guy is a ST's fanatic, and has dedicated a whole 15 mins to the Rams's ST problems. He covers NFL & NCAA stuff, and knows what he's talking about. And for him to dedicate a long video to our crappy ST's play, is saying something.

If you are talking about defense then I concur but only when it comes to the coverage because you have to expect pass when you are 16 points up and the rush and coverage should dovetail. We weren’t getting home and we’re playing a softer zone. Yet again, disastrous though we usually can rely on a big sack or interception… (officiating allowed!)

As for offense, I would argue the pick six would never have happened if they had played it more simple if not necessarily conservative. Even a disguised RB draw would have been a better call. Denver tightened up precisely because we kept doing what we were doing. I would argue that the big plus of 13 personel is that you can run the ball down their throat and play action pass off it. That would have been a recipe for success in the second half rather than splitting out wide!

Man I have a hard time hanging this loss on two players. I get it but that feels too harsh. If we can find a better returner than Smith we would all be pleased. Not many teams have a former starting CB backing up their first teamers. Like Smith, Forbes has had some good games but both have limitations not least consistency

That, consistency, is admittedly one of the worst problems for a coach and the team

After giving it a few days for everything to sink in I have come to the conclusion that the real problem this season has been with coaches and the decisions they are making during the games. If real progress is not made within the next five or six games, I want to see Shula and Bubba given their walking papers.

Its easy to say the "melt downs" are a trend, but you have to take each one separately and really look at it.

In the Eagles game, our defense played over their heads in the first half. They were never good enough to do that to the Eagles. The Eagles kick returners in that game also looked like the bad news bears trying to field ground balls....so you have to acknowledge that in the first half, things went our way. In the second half, our defense regressed to the mean - offensively, we drove down for the game winning FG but it got blocked. Two FGs blocked in one game has probably happened to us one time over the past 25 years if that.

In the Seahawks game, McVay made a mistake not going for two when we scored a TD to go up 29-14. IMO, every team regardless should go for two in that situation, but especially us: our offense last year was much better than our defense. We go for two and get it, we win that game. That said, the Seahawks "converted" a two point conversation that is the first of its kind. So something that has happened one time in the last hundred years.

Finally in the Broncos game, we were called for five penalties in the last two minutes which was the most in 25 years.

When things happen that haven't happened since smart phones became a thing - or since phones became a thing in general with the two pt conversion - those are outliers.

Now, the ACTUAL common thread between those games? Settling for too many FGs. But all three of those defenses are good, and in two of those games, we were missing either Puka or Davante.

Well done!

My thoughts:
I think McVay becomes infatuated with the passing game at times.
I am a firm believer that balance is important - without it, you become predictable and that leads to losses. Williams averaged 5.9 YPC. I've seen McVay give up on the run before it was necessary far too many times. Yes, when you have all your elite pass options healthy, you can pass some more. The Rams do not have that right now, but McVay insists on passing (70%) too much IMO.

I am getting very impatient with Shula. It started last year and, for the most part, is continuing this year. Soft zone... players out of position, missed tackles... just plain sloppy and disorganized. I'm afraid we're stuck with him for the remainder of the season (McVay's buddy) - hope it improves or things could get very sticky.

Agree on Forbes. You are taught in Pop Warner to not run out of bounds on a kickoff. I don't know if it is coaching (STs are NOT good right now) or Forbes... but, if he has to be reminded not to do that during practice? Not very bright - bye.

The defense continues to be my biggest concern. They played a good QB (not great) in Purdy and got taken behind the woodshed. They played a QB-less team (NY) and still lost. They played a decent QB who, frankly, they should have dominated and held that offense to 21 at most.

Philly, in Philly, next. Hurt is a dangerous QB. He can hurt you multiple ways. The Rams defense is going to have to be disciplined and play their assignments almost perfectly. I just don't have a good feeling about this game - good news? Whenever I don't feel great about the next game? Rams win :laugh2:

I truly fear what Allen can do to that defense. Maybe they right that ship this week and are a better unit with better schemes by the time they play him.

Go Rams... always!!

Wow. This is the most HORRIFIC analysis I can ever recall watching. Talk about players lack of effort and desire, this is a perfect example of that. Disgusting isn't even a fitting description. What's a word worse than disgusting?

Here's a clip of a special teams player that shows what effort and desire can be like. Why aren't the Rams special teamers playing like this?
