Tampa Bay Vipers vs. New York Guardians

Sunday's XFL opening weekend slate will feature a duel between a pair of expected contenders. The New York Guardians will host the Tampa Bay Vipers in game three of this weekend's four-game slate. The Guardians are the second XFL franchise to call the Big Apple home. The 2001 XFL featured the New York/New Jersey Hitmen, who played their games at the old Giants Stadium. The team finished with a 4-6 record and missed the postseason.

The Guardians are looking to fix that, especially in light of the Giants' and Jets' struggles in recent seasons. Meanwhile, the Vipers are the second Florida-based team for the XFL, following the Orlando Rage back in 2001. In XFL 1.0, the Rage posted the league's best record at 8-2 but came up short in the 2001 playoffs. So the Vipers have some history to live up to in 2020.

Before either team can think about long-term goals, they'll have to play one another to start the season. Let's get you ready for what should be an entertaining game.

Tampa Bay at New York

Kickoff: Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. ET
Where: MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)
TV: FOX
Spread: Vipers -2.5

Three Things to Watch
1. Both head coaches have something to prove

The matchup between the head coaches could wind up being the most interesting part of this game. New York's Kevin Gilbride and Tampa's Marc Trestman both have something to prove this season. Gilbride wants to show that he can still lead a team after a six-year retirement. Gilbride had a memorable run as the Giants offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach (2004-13), where he won two Super Bowl rings (XLII, XLVI), and molded Eli Manning into a future Hall of Famer.

Trestman is out to prove that his recent NFL stint, which didn't go very well, was just a bump in the road and nothing more. Trestman coached the Bears in the two seasons following the Lovie Smith era (2013-14). Unfortunately, the Bears went just 13-19, there were numerous reports of locker room strife during that span, and Trestman was dismissed as soon as the 2014 campaign ended. From there, Trestman became the Ravens offensive coordinator where things didn't fare much better.

In 2015, the Ravens had a dismal 5-11 season in which they only went over the 20-point threshold in six games. Then-Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco only started 10 games that year before tearing both his ACL and MCL. Trestman was fired just five weeks into the 2016 season. Although the Ravens had a 3-2 record at the time of Trestman's firing, the Ravens were averaging just 19 points per game. Perhaps a fresh start in Tampa is what Trestman needs.

2. Choices at quarterback

Both teams have depth at quarterback, which could make for some interesting coaching decisions. Trestman says that Aaron Murray will start for the Vipers but that the other signal-callers on the roster — Taylor Cornelius, Quinton Flowers, and Chase Litton — could see snaps as well. Murray is best remembered for his four seasons at Georgia (2010-13) during which he threw for 13,166 yards and 121 touchdowns while winning two bowl games. After bouncing around a few NFL franchises from 2014 to '17, Murray seemed to find a home with the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football (AAF).

Murray completed 64 percent of his passes for the Legends and threw for 1,048 yards and three touchdowns before the AAF folded. Cornelius threw for 3,978 yards and 32 touchdowns at Oklahoma State in 2018 and spent 2019 on the Packers' practice squad. Flowers, who is a Tampa legend based on his days at the University of South Florida (2014-17), is the American Athletic Conference's all-time leader in total offense (11,796 total yards, 112 combined touchdowns). Flowers spent time with both the Bengals and the Colts as a running back. Now with the Vipers, Trestman plans on giving Flowers reps at quarterback and using his speed in other packages as well.

As for Litton, he turned pro after just three seasons (2015-17) at Marshall. He was a practice squad player for both the Chiefs (2018) and Jaguars (2019) but was released from both teams after just a few weeks. Litton was originally chosen by Seattle in the XFL draft a few months ago but was traded to Tampa during training camp.

The Guardians also have some options under center. There's former Penn State standout Matt McGloin who played in 13 games for the Raiders (1,868 passing yards, 11 touchdowns) from 2013 and '16. There's also Luis Perez, who was originally assigned to the Los Angeles Wildcats but was traded to the Guardians just a few weeks ago. Perez made a name for himself with the AAF's Birmingham Iron in which he ranked third in passing yards (1,460), fifth in touchdown passes (5), and third in pass completions (135) at the time of the league's demise. New York also has former Tar Heel Marquise Williams, who's thrown 42 career passes in the NFL, CFL, and AAF.

3. Head-to-head

These two coaches have gone against one another before. When Trestman was coaching the Bears in 2013, they took on the New York Giants who had Gilbride calling their plays. The Bears won that Week 6 meeting 27-21, so there is some brief history between these two men, albeit that was nearly seven years ago and in two entirely different leagues.

Final Analysis

This will be a close game with plenty of points scored, but in the end, the Vipers have a little more firepower on their side.

Prediction: Vipers 30, Guardians 27

St. Louis BattleHawks vs. Dallas Renegades

The Dallas Renegades head into the 2020 XFL season as one of the favorites to win it all, and their road to a championship will begin on Sunday against the St. Louis BattleHawks. Globe Life Park will be the home field for the Renegades, as it begins its life as the former stadium of the Texas Rangers.

Bob Stoops will be back on the sidelines as the head coach of the Renegades. Stoops was the longtime coach of the Oklahoma Sooners had a tremendous level of success during his 18-year stint in Norman, where he won 10 Big 12 titles and a national championship. Stoops stepped down prior to the 2017 season to spend more time with his family and to recharge the coaching batteries, so to speak. The setup of the XFL with a 10-game season — in addition to not having to recruit players 24/7 like you have to in college football — should fit his situation like a glove.

It will be a mini University of Oklahoma coaching staff reunion on Sunday for BattleHawks head coach Jonathan Hayes and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chuck Long. Hayes and Long both coached under Stoops at Oklahoma. Hayes was the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for Stoops from 1999-2002 before heading off to the NFL to coach for 16 years. Long was the offensive coordinator for the Sooners when they won the 2000 BCS National Championship and should be able to help develop dual-threat quarterback Jordan Ta'amu, who will be the starter this week for the BattleHawks.

St. Louis at Dallas

Kickoff: Sunday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. ET
Where: Globe Life Park (Arlington, Texas)
TV: ESPN
Spread: Renegades -9.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Dallas offense

Landry Jones is the starting quarterback for the Renegades, although a knee injury suffered in training camp in January has put his availability on Sunday into question. Jones has had his share of experience in the NFL with most of his success coming in Pittsburgh. He is very familiar with Bob Stoops and his offensive mindset after playing four years under his tutelage at Oklahoma. Running back should be another position of strength for Dallas, as Cameron Artis-Payne and Lance Dunbar lead a pretty deep group. Their ability to wear down the St. Louis defense will be crucial in this season-opening contest. Former Sooners receivers Jeff Badet and Jazz Ferguson will also bring more continuity to the offense. Badet can run a 4.27 40-yard dash, which should set him up nicely to stretch opposing defenses all year long. Ferguson has the height (6-5) and speed that will cause matchup problems for opposing defensive backs too. His development is going to be an underrated key to success for the Renegades passing attack this season.

2. St. Louis secondary

The BattleHawks look to be well-rounded defensive football. Jonathan Hayes and his staff did a really good job of prioritizing the defensive line and secondary when putting this group together. This week, the secondary will be under the gun against the Air Raid offense of Dallas offensive coordinator Hal Mumme. Robert Nelson and Kenny Robinson will need to have huge games at cornerback and safety, respectively; Nelson has the ability to play at an NFL-caliber level and has previous spring football experience from playing for the Arizona Hotshots in the AAF. Robinson will be using this opportunity to create some impressive game tape since he is eligible to be selected in the 2020 NFL draft after leaving West Virginia at the end of last season. This will be a very unique situation with Robinson, and if he can play well and the XFL has lasting power, it will be interesting to see if other college athletes go this same route.

3. Dallas defense

The ability to play sound, disciplined football will be crucial for the Renegades defense this week because they will have to find a way to keep Jordan Ta’amu in the pocket. Dallas’s defense will face a tough test to play consistently for four quarters since their Air Raid offense can put their defense in harm’s way if they score too quickly or have too many three-and-outs. Hau'oli Kikaha had 19 sacks during his final year at the University of Washington. That performance led the Saints to select him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. When Kikaha is completely healthy, he can cause plenty of headaches for opposing offenses. Gelen Robinson will be expected to be a disruptive force at defensive tackle, which will set the tone for the rest of the defensive line to go to work against opposing quarterbacks. The secondary has plenty of experience; Josh Hawkins has three NFL starts in 32 games across three seasons. His experience and speed should be very valuable assets for the Dallas secondary. Josh Thornton is another cornerback who has spent time in multiple NFL camps and has pretty good speed, which should fit help him a lot this week against the St. Louis passing attack.

Final Analysis

Stoops was known as "Big Game Bob" back at Oklahoma and should have his guys ready to go in Week 1 to play a pretty crisp, clean game. There won't be a ton of mystery as to what these two teams are going to try to do schematically since each staff is going to have a strong read on the other's primary tendencies. Home-field advantage should be the difference, as the Renegades will find a way to execute a couple of two- or three-point PATs to pick up their first win of the season.

Prediction: Renegades 30, BattleHawks 22

These defenses are off sides damn near every play and not a single one called yet. I like the loose play.

I was expecting more from the Vipers. Jerry Glanville of all people is their d-coordinator if you didn't notice!

I noticed. They need to figure out what they want on offense. I'd stick with Flowers.

Not bad football at all. I've enjoyed what I've seen of it this weekend. It's been better than I expected. BattleHawks not looking bad so far for being 9 1/2 point dogs. We shall see. GO BattleHawks. Cheers!
