For the first 52 minutes of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, Rams rookie Darrell Henderson hadn’t stepped foot between the white lines. He spent the entire time on the sidelines, watching as Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown handled the workload at running back.
But with 7:21 left in the game and the Rams at the Panthers’ 5-yard line up three points, Henderson surprisingly trotted onto the field. It was a huge spot for a rookie who had played no snaps up to that point, given the circumstances and the area of the field the Rams were in.

Fans were shocked by Sean McVay’s decision to plug Henderson in after Gurley gained momentum with 41 yards on four carries during that drive. It wasn’t necessarily by design that way, though.
On ESPN Radio, McVay explained that it had to do with Gurley needing a breather and Brown getting an IV because of the heat and humidity in Charlotte.
“I know we were missing some key players in some important moments that I was wondering how long these IVs take to get these guys back on the field,” McVay said.
Host J.B. Long brought up the “and-goal situation where Malcolm Brown was nowhere to be found.”

“That was very true, you noticed that one,” McVay said. Malcolm was nowhere to be found. Brandin Cooks had to take a little bit of a breather. Malcolm’s veins must not have been working with us because he was gone forever. Either that or he had to use the bathroom. I don’t know which one it was.”
Later on in the show, McVay went deeper into the decision to play Henderson there and the confidence he has in the rookie.

“It was a good job by Jared (Goff) kind of getting everything coordinated and making sure that Darrell understood what to do in those situations and we have confidence in those guys,” McVay said. “Certainly, Todd and Malcolm were the ones carrying the load yesterday, but in an instance where Darrell had to go in, there wasn’t any hesitation on our part due to the confidence we have in him.”
Henderson’s carry went for no gain, but he stayed in the game for the next play, too. That was the touchdown pass to Tyler Higbee, which proved to be the difference. On that snap, Henderson split out as a receiver and ran a route into the flat, but Goff didn’t look his way.
Gurley received only one touch in the red zone and none in goal-to-go situations, which was surprising. The Rams likely would’ve preferred to keep him in on that crucial drive, but with the heat and humidity wearing on the players, Henderson got the call.

Last year when TG went down Brown wasn't available. Which concerned me, I mean that is your job as a backup. To be available. But hey, things happen right.

Now he just had another opportunity pass him by. So yeah, I am probably being unfair to him. But IMO there is a need, a role in this offense for a power back and it is why I wanted us to sign CJ. Brown needs to be ready when those moments afford themselves. He certainly has the ability but this league isn't just about that, truth is being able to stay up is crucial too.

I thought at the time, Henderson’s appearance was strange in it’s timing. He was probably not in sync or needed more carries.

I would think that all three RBs would be use to playing in the heat and humidity after their college days at Georgia, Texas, and Memphis. To me, they may want to upgrade their off season training.

IMO Coach Skip Peete might have failed to keep McVay aware of the situation ongoing with Brown. If Peete did make McVay aware then that's on him.

Brown being unable to perform then telling McVay that info thus McVay might have utilized Henderson (in place to spell Gurley) when the offense was not in the critical Red Zone.

Gurley rested while Henderson being worked........the Gurley utilized in place of Brown in the Red Zone!

That's how that should have went down......

I thought McVay was setting up a pass play for Henderson. Turned out to be Higbee. Turned out that he was the only one available at the time.

Gurley was on a roll after the Natson punt return set the Rams up in good field position. You have to feed him the ball there. Sounds like McVay expected Brown to return sooner than he did. I don't think he changes the play calls because things were clicking in the run game. I'm a little surprised he didn't let Gurley finish the drive. McVay has wasted so many time outs in other games but, using one here may have been a good idea. Give Gurley a breather and let him finish the drive.

It certainly wasn't an obvious play vhoice which may have been part of the reason he was called on.

He certainly didn't have any where to run with the ball as the hole closed so quickly and there didn't seem to be anything on the outside either.

Henderson is going to have a big game at some point, where he flips some field for us. Sure would be nice to have it happen this weekend.

Have we seen McVay call a screen pass yet with Henderson on the field much?

Not that I can recall. But I eagerly await that dude running the ball with just a crack of daylight.

I hope this play into shape strategy that the RB group has going on isn't indicative of a Superbowl hangover.

Reality is this is what you get with the new rules of training camp and not playing starters at all during the preseason. Kelly and Davis would not have been as gassed. I don't see it as much of a problem moving forward. Our backs will be fine in another week for those kind of conditions, road game, hot, a lot of plays. I wouldn't doubt Henderson gets a few "Kamara" plays this week though. I can't wait!!!!
