Which NFL team could become the next Patriots-style dynasty? Here are the most likely candidates

Listen: Pick 6 June 17: https://www.cbssports.com/podcasts/pick-six/

The New England Patriots have won six Super Bowls since the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era began in 2001, and it only gets more head-spinning from there.

Eighteen consecutive seasons with an above-.500 record? Check. More playoff wins for Brady than all but four other franchises in their entire history? Check. A coach who's been a part of 21% of all the Super Bowls ever played? Check, again.

It's really not a fair question, then, to ask who'll become the next Patriots, because that bar is set so insanely high. But we asked it anyway. Which team is currently set up the best to become the NFL's next dynasty?

Four CBSSports.com writers took on that question (and many others) on Monday's mailbag edition of the Pick Six Podcast, and the team that received the most backing was the one that got left at the altar by Josh McDaniels just a year and a half ago.

"It's the Colts," Ryan Wilson said. "Chris Ballard has been crushing it, they have Andrew Luck and young guys like Darius Leonard, Quenton Nelson, and so much cap room."

Pick Six host Will Brinson said there's another good reason to think it'll be Indy.

"The Colts are my answer as well, and the other thing with the Colts is that their division could go (downhill) fast," Brinson said. "Houston's got a crazy situation with their GM, everybody in Jacksonville could get fired, and I like what the Titans are doing with their front office, but at QB they're in no-man's land.

"The Colts have a QB who's a little older (Luck turns 30 in September) but he should still be able to play for a while."

Other teams that came up included the Eagles, Seahawks, Rams and Chiefs. Sean Wagner-McGough thinks K.C. has the best chance because they have the best quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, but not everyone agreed.

"Not the Chiefs, because Andy Reid is 61, and he's not coaching forever," said John Breech, who mentioned the Browns, among others, as a possible future dynasty.

Listen to the full conversation below as the guys answer other mailbag questions, like which team is most likely to move out of the country, the O/U for James Conner rushing yards, who they'd chose to be stuck with if they were stranded on an island (!), and more. And be sure to subscribe/listen daily to get all the latest NFL news and notes.

I think the Colts and Seahawks are a bit of a stretch for this list due to the age of their QB’s.

It would seem to make a dynasty projection you need a QB mid-20’s.

To be a dynasty like the Patriots you have to have a cutting edge cheating mind like Bellicheck. A coach who finds new ways to innovate cheating systems when he is exposed cheating in established systems.

Like stealing hand signals to opponents walkthroughs to crashing opponents headsets to stealing playbooks to deflating footballs etc.

So next dynasty i’m going with Seattle.

The Pats haven’t had to expend a lot of energy winning that crap division year after year, that’s why I have to leave the Rams out. As long as Russ is around the hags are a threat. Same with the Chiefs, Rivers is gonna retire sometime but who knows when that’s going to be. So I go with the colts, don’t know much about their coach but they have the qb and the questionable competition.

. . . or you just need a magical Leprechaun! Didn't Belichick already personally endorse McVay's Horns as the next dynasty?

24 year old quarterback who's been a two time pro bowler and took his team the Superbowl. 32 year old coach who's already won Coach of the Year. Its pretty easy to see who's got the best chance.

NFL Media collective brain trust: "... but, but, but we already denounced Goff as a bust and McVay as too young to be a real coach; so we simply can't consider them as being seriously worthy - not while we are driving the talking heads in this here league, dammitt!!!"

Not sure that we’ll ever see an NFL dynasty like the Patriots again.

It would require an unlikely combination of HC, QB, and playing in a perpetually weak division for decades.

But if I had to name one team? Yeah, I would pick the Rams.

They’ve already got the HC, might have the necessary caliber QB, and definitely have the talent acquisition GM.

The improvement in their roster and their coaching has been phenomenal over the last 2+ years. Sooooo...

Certainly not the Chiefs or seahawks. Mahomes will have maybe 2 years before he falls and the seahawks qb is getting older

I agree...the #1 criteria to me is playing in a division with 3 absolute dumpster fires year in and year out...unfortunately I don't see that in the NFC West...But the Rams will be in the mix every year for quite some time...

The Colts?? Ok just because they have cap space and a QB doesn't translate into sustained decade long success.... what's this writer on, sounds like something worth trying:sneaky:

It'll be very hard for any other team to repeat what the Patriots have done. Besides the QB and HC with a system that works, they've also shown a willingness to exploit holes in the rules and of course outright cheat at times - and many of the loopholes have been filled, and I suspect in the future teams caught cheating their way to a Super Bowl will be punished more severely - not just a draft pick, but costing themselves entire drafts or cap room or both, along with those responsible facing life time bans. The Patriots would still have done very well without cheating, but not as well, and with a lower level of success players would be less likely to give them discounts to help with chasing Rings.

The colts seem like a reasonable pick, until you realize that they couldnt even become a dynasty with one of, if not the best qb ever in the league.

There will never be another Patriots-style dynasty , other teams don't cheat like the Pats do.
