Stranger's comment that this topic deserves it's own thread rings true for me, what is the most important play in team history?

My vote is for the Proehl catch in the NFC championship against the Bucs in '99. I think what can distinguish a champion is often doing the one thing the other team never suspects - like Jordan kicking it out to Steve Kerr for a game winning three in the finals. That's what made this play so special - their backs were against the wall for one of the only times all year and they found one of the few guys who hadn't caught a TD all year, a guy who was a role player but lacked virtually all of the athletic elements of his teammates to finally climb that mountain.

The sheer unexpectedness, contrasted with how epic is was, is what seperates it in my mind (not to mention the Rams were facing a deficit, albeit 1 point, at that juncture).

Gotta think the 1 yard short has to be the most important one.

The Proehl catch and the Bruce TD are definitely up there though.

I've said it was the Proehl catch since it happened and the Rams won the SB. Of course had they lost it would have been in the running for most wasted play.

It's an amazing throw.

For me it's a toss up between JJ's pick 6 and Tavon's punt return for a TD in Superbowl 38.

Ricky's Catch is a hard one to argue against. So clutch.

Many of you may know of my pure disgust for tampon... Making Ricky's Catch that much more beauti-mus in my eyes. :hehe:

Hell, I even witnessed one of our own members here at ROD proudly sport a Proehl jersey into Raymond J Tampon Stadium during a Ram game in that shit-hole. That was none other than RamHusker btw.

But for me, there is one play that stands above all others...

Bruce's game winning TD catch in our only SB victory.

I've heard that Faulk has a picture of that catch hanging over his fireplace in his home. I think he agrees with me.

Just to throw a monkey wrench into the mix... what about Flipper Anderson's game winning walk-off catch against the Giants in NY during our playoff run which lead to our appearance in the SB against the Steelers. Like the Proehl catch, we don't get to the SB without it.

On edit: Oops, did I just get my seasons mixed up? This was the year we got smashed in the NFL Champsionship by the whiners, no?

Yep. Everett had a really shitty outing that day.

That play is UP THERE, it literally made me collapse into my chair from my feet.
But Dre Bly's interception in that game was the defensive play I look to.

I gotcha covered. :sly:

thanks!

A big part of the reason I think that's the play is that the Rams were behind, and the offense was not moving the ball very well. Had they kicked a FG there it might have won the game too though.

As a fan I've always been grateful that one of the most over rated coaches in my lifetime was dumb enough to insert Shaun King as the starter over Dilfer that year.

Mike Jones tackle, 1 yard short to seal the Super Bowl win.

Although, there have been a lot of important and great plays in Rams history that was an easy answer for me and I agree with you that it was the Mike Jones TACKLE that helped preserve the Rams Superbowl victory!

While we flubbed in the NFC Championship the next wk, that Flipper catch to beat the Giants has gotta be top 10, perhaps even top 5 :)

Also going with this. First one that popped in my head. Have a football signed by Mike Jones sitting on my desk right now saying "The Tackle" and XXXIV Champs.

That was fricken awesome! One of the best Rams moments ever. I have to go with the Mike Jones tackle, but I do have great love for the others mentioned here.

Before reading any responses... just off the thread title...

My pick: Proehl's catch.

That catch set the rest in motion. Without it... There is no Bruce catch. There is no tackle. Proehl and Warner connected for one of the most pivotal plays in Rams history.
