San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh – Conference Call – September 24, 2013

(On how they plan to get the offense going this week)
“That’s a pretty broad question – consistent, good football. We’ve got to play good football, especially against the Rams. They are a stout defense, multiple defense, talented and well-coordinated. The response has to be good football.”

(On if coming off back-to-back losses creates a tough time for the team)
“We’re facing adversity. It gives us the opportunity to stare it in the face and respond. That’s a relentless quest for improvement, that’s where we’re at.”

(On the reason for the lack of offensive production)
“The first question – offensively, it’s always a team game, the 11 (players) with precision. The effort’s been extremely good and the precision needs to be better out of the entire unit.”

(On what he remembers about the two meetings between the Rams and 49ers last year)
“Hotly contested, division rival, big game and no different going into it this year.”

(On their offensive approach this week)
“I don’t think it’s in our best interest to discuss what our approach will be going into the ballgame.”

(On establishing the run being a key part of the offense)
“Definitely, we want precision in our game. We strive to be a balanced offense running and throwing the football. As coaches, try to put your players in a position to be successful – that’s what we’re working at right now.”

(On how he plans to contain the Rams’ offensive weapons)
“Again, good football, team defense, playing our assignment, playing our role, having our eyes in the right place and continue to play with the effort. Getting up off the ground, running to the football, swarming the tackle, tackling with more precision. All those things that create good team defense.”

(On if he agrees with Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher’s statement regarding the 49ers probably seeing themselves in a similar situation to the Rams)
“Yeah, we want a better result. You want the better outcome. You work very hard to achieve that and feel like you can try to – maybe there’s something you’re doing that you shouldn’t be doing or something that you are doing that you shouldn’t be doing to influence the outcome. You feel like there’s something you can do and you want to implement it for a better result.”

(On what the Rams did to be successful against the 49ers last year)
“They’re a good football team. Those were, as you said, hotly contested battles and very competitive. It has been throughout our division and we anticipate the same going into this ballgame. We’re looking forward to it. We know it’s a big task and our guys are excited for it.”

(On if he sensed frustration from his team not being able to beat the Rams last year)
“When you don’t have the result – the winning result – that’s what you’re striving for. That’s the goal every week. How can you win your next game, that game being the most important game of the season and that’s every single week.”

(On if this is currently the most adversity he’s faced since he’s been in San Francisco)
“Stare it in the face and defeat it. That’s the…demonstrate who you are as a team. That’s where the opportunity is.”

(On if defensive coordinators have caught on to the read option offense or if the offense is just struggling)
“It’s a relentless quest for improvement – I think any team, any offense, any defense – is what you’re striving for. Had there been adjustments, it’s an ever evolving thing. How the Rams – what’s their plan, what’s our plan going to be and how that plays out. Able and ready to adjust is part of the excitement of the game.”

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick – Conference Call – September 24, 2013

(On if it is part of the 49ers game plan to keep him in the pocket more this season)
“It’s just part of the game plan that we’re going through right now.”

(On if he would rather run the ball than stay in the pocket)
“I’ll do whatever this team needs me to do to win.”

(On if he ever thinks about how far he’s come since he played the Rams last season)
“No, I just think about moving forward.”

(On what he’s seen from the Rams defense and how they plan to attack it)
“They’re a great defense. They play hard. They play fast. We have to come prepared.”

(On what was different in their losses over the last two weeks compared to their win against Green Bay in Week 1)
“We didn’t play well the last two games.”

(On if he has noticed a difference in the way that defenses have played him to keep him in the pocket)
“A little bit, but it’s more our execution than anything.”

(On why the Rams were able to have success against them last year)
“Because we didn’t execute.”

(On if this week’s game is an important game with both teams coming in 1-2 on the season)
“Yeah, I think we want to win every game.”

(On what the attitude of the team is right now)
“We have to win, that’s all we’re worried about.”
