Todd Gurley names his top 5 RBs of all time, one Ram among them

Todd Gurley has risen up the ranks as one of the top running backs in the NFL today, if not the very best. Being an elite running back, it’s fair to assume Gurley knows a great tailback when he sees one.

He was asked to name his top five running backs of all time and his list is pretty interesting. There’s one Ram included and a surprise honoree who starred with the Titans thanks to his speed.

Gurley said Barry Sanders is “probably the G.O.A.T.” and was the first back mentioned on the list, which shows how highly the former Lion is thought of by Todd. Adrian Peterson is next on the list for his resiliency after returning from that devastating ACL injury. Gurley mentioned Chris Johnson after Peterson, followed by Walter Payton and Eric Dickerson.

Gurley said this list is in no particular order, but it’s pretty clear he thinks Sanders deserves to be at the top of the list.

I'm kinda partial to Dickerson. But I have a feeling Gurley will be moving up my list of all time greats pretty soon. (y)

#1 only had 5 great years...so, I could never count him. But,if you took his 3 best, maybe you are right.

1. ED
2. LD
3. Payton
4. Sanders
5. Maybe Faulk....I am not very partial to him, but he was smart, and made clutch plays, too.
Gurley, I hope will replace him on this list!

Sanders was defiantly the most elusive by far. But over rated IMO. Too many tackles for loss. The Lions were ALWAYS in 3rd long. Too much to overcome on a consistent basis.Lions never won anything with him.

I believe Faulk is the most underrated RB to ever get mentioned on these lists. For a guy who held the single season TD record, won a SB, MVP twice, 1st ballot HOF, etc., you would think its impossible he could be underrated... but he is.
Outside of Rams fans he is an afterthought and among Rams fans he plays second fiddle.

I will take Marshall in his prime over anyone.

Same here. I'd put MF ahead of everyone. While some of them were better "runners" than Faulk. None of them played the position as completely as MF did IMO.

Exactly dude.
Yes, there have been better pure runners.
There has never been a better FOOTBALL player at Running Back.

Marshall Faulk in your backfield gives you an elite ball carrier who will not fumble and will always be conscious of the sticks, an immediate upgrade in pass protection and safety valve for your QB in every possible way.
Capable of the big play, 100% dependable on the SMART play.

Marshall! Marshall!! Marshall!!!

Any list that doesn't have Eric Dickerson at 1 is invalid.

I find it fascinating that not a single poster mentions Emmitt Smith.
Honestly me to and to add to that I was expecting Jim Brown on somebody's list and none. Maybe to old and not many people seen him?

Kinda reminds me of the GOAT in basketball debate and nobody mentions Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell?

I think OJ, Sanders, Dickerson Campbell and Sayers oh and Bo, if you are talking pure runner. Best all around, Faulk, Payton, Craig, and Allen.

But that 5 years was the best I ever saw, and gave him the Hall of Fame. Earl Campbell ran the way I like RB's to run. I saw him in person at the Astrodome many times, as I lived in South East Texas, and he ruined me for other RB's. He ruined Eric Dickerson for me, because ED seemed to be half-assing it all of the time, which I now know is not true, but then it made me wish for Cullen Bryant, John Cappiletti (sp?), and Lawrence McCutcheon. Crazy, huh? lol
