RB Todd Gurley is better than ever

Todd Gurley’s career in 2016 looked like it could be on the rocks. It seems crazy to say given how explosive he had been as a rookie, but things were so bad with the Rams last year that he had begun showing worrying signs as a runner.

Gurley was beginning to look like Trent Richardson – seeing ghosts in the hole, bailing on clean plays and expecting the blocking to break down before it ever did. Poor pass protection from offensive lines has broken quarterbacks in the past, but Richardson – and then Gurley – were raising the question of whether the same thing could happen to running backs.

Fast forward and all of those concerns look foolish. Gurley is not only back to his best, he’s better than ever and has been as big a beneficiary of the changes the Rams have made as anybody.

Gurley is now PFF’s No. 2 ranked running back, trailing only Alvin Kamara of the Saints, who has significantly less playing time. Gurley is second in the league in yards from scrimmage, just 47 yards behind Le’Veon Bell, and his 13 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns lead the league.

His effectiveness as a receiver has been the real strength of his season this year, but he has been better across the board.

As a receiver he ranks fourth among all backs in yards per route run after having ranked 34th a season ago. He has gained more receiving yards per route run than most wide receivers, including names like Larry Fitzgerald, Dez Bryant, Alshon Jeffery and Michael Crabtree.

Gurley has been a big play threat all season, making the kind of athletic plays we saw during his rookie season that were largely absent in 2016. In 2016 he was more concerned with turning broken plays into anything positive, such was the situation on the offensive line.

He has 12 runs of 15 or more yards this season, which is already five more than a season ago. Those big-play runs last year accounted for just 129 of his rushing total, but the dozen this season have already racked up 271 yards, and account for 26.2 percent of his rushing total.

The offensive line isn’t the cause for his success this season, but rather the catalyst that allowed him to play like the player he can be. He ranks sixth in PFF’s elusive rating, which attempts to distill the performance of a running back from the blocking that influences him by measuring yards after contact and broken tackles, both as a receiver and runner. Last season his rating was fifteen points lower and he ranked 19th in the same category.

All of the ink at the moment is going to the breakout season from Jared Goff and the display by Sean McVay as the head coach, but the renaissance of Todd Gurley in the backfield has been one of the stories of the season for the Rams, and every bit as important a reclamation project for this franchise.

Here's another stat for you: Gurley hasn't fumbled the ball since week 5 against the Seahawks (Earl Thomas fumble)

All Gurley saw last year was 8,9,10, 11, even seemed sometimes like 12 in the box. I don't blame Gurley for last year's drop off...blame for that goes to...ready or not...Fisher!!!

He's amazing! We were told by Philly fans that we wouldn't be able to run on their number one run defense. The only thing that stopped him was a holding call and McVay not using him more.

Need to feed the beast more than 13 times through the entire game. I know he wants him fresh for playoffs, but doesnt matter much if we dont make it in. And what is it? When Gurley rushes 20+ times we are 7-0 or something. forget the stat exactly but you get the point. We need more Gurley rushes plain and simple/

Yup it's 20+ touches, runs and receptions combined. You would think that s not hard to do. I understand not over taxing him but maybe run Brown more?

Thanks for the confirmation. Dont see how 15-17 rushes + 3-5 passes would be too taxing for him. Thats still a pretty light workload for a workhorse 3 down back. McVay really needs to get Gurley his 20+ touches. More Brown would be nice too. I think the real problem is McVay just abandoning the run so much, especially when it is working so damn well.

Great to see his reemergence.

Goff and Fisher might get the spotlight, its to be expected as QB and coach.

But Gurley's the player I enjoy watching most on our team.
How good was it to see the hurdle last night against the Eagles?

We didn't run enough offensive plays (which is actually impressive given the score) for him to get those carries. He was right on track in terms of percentage wise, so he would have gotten those carries had we not fallen behind. McVay going for the pass late instead of the run wasn't smart, but it's a lesson he'll learn as he grows as a coach.

I believe we ran 43 offensive plays? something like that, cant remember exactly. yes we didnt run many offensive snaps but was still a bad ratio pass/run wise, especially with how well Gurley was doing. Agree its a lesson learned, hopefully at least.

My issue was that we came out after halftime and ran three straight plays to Gurley for 40 yards. Then, after Wentz went down, featured Gurley again with three plays for 30 yards and a TD. After Havenstein went out, we're 1st and 10 at our own 35, up by 1, with 9 minutes left. I understand being aggressive, but Gurley was averaging over 10 yards a play after half time. Fourth quarter with the lead should be Gurley time, especially with our RT out.

Trying to make some positives in all the bad that happened Sunday.......Gurley should be ready to carry a major load going into the most important game of this regular season. We have two banged up starting OT's who would rather run block for Gurley than pass block over & over again against the front seven of the Seabirds. RB Malcolm Brown will have put another week further from his knee injury too.

Todd's running harder and faster. He can run inside but, he's at his best using that speed and power on the outside. It helps to have better blocking but, maximizing his speed and power he doesn't always need great blocks. He has shown surprisingly great hands in the passing game. While he is not known for his elusiveness he has shown some good shiftiness avoiding tacklers this year. It's fun to watch his explosiveness in both the run and passing game.

I'm not as worried about the pass/run ratio because McVay uses the passing game as an extension of the running game so he can get Gurley some additional space to do what makes him special, but it just has to be the right call in the right situation. McVay didn't make the right call in my opinion, but it is what it is. I like that he's aggressive, I like that he and Goff are fearless, I think that'll help us more than it'll hurt us. As he grows I think he gets better at understanding when it's best to be aggressive and when it's best not to be.

Agreed, with how well Gurley was running, I would have liked to see him featured more late, but with the season winding down, he should have fresher legs to make tired defenses pay.

As an advisor fantasy player I'm a big believe in the 300+ touches rule/theory/whatever you want to call it and 20 touches a game is 320 not including playoffs which is a huge workload.

Idk if there is a deliberate plan to not get Gurley too many touches so they don't wear him out but if that's the case, I for one can live with near meaningless losses in the regular season if it means more touches for Gurley and better play calling in the playoffs.
