Defense isn't my strong suit. I know O a bunch more, so I defer to the wiser FB guys here but....

Isn't the best option at this point to go back to the basics?

1. Drop the blitzing. Use exotic blitzes and disguises situationally.
2. Rely on the strength of the front 4.
3. Press coverage when Tru J gets back.
4. Bring guys up.
5. Trust the DBs to stay on their man.

Start doing it this year, and continue on next year. I'm not sure if we have the LBs and DBs to press tight press, but goddamn, all that blitzing isn't working. I liked the way we were going on D before all the massive changes. All we had needed were DBs and LBs.

Is that really what this comes down to? Better LB talent and DBs that can press? I don't know. What do you guys think?

I'm a bit like you Athos in that I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to Defense (hell I can't even tell what warrants a Holding penalty anymore!! :) ) but that all sounds good to me.

There's a time and a place for for blitzing and it's not on every down. Hell, if we only send 4, it gives the zebras fewer situations to concentrate on and with any luck they might just start seeing Quinn getting smashed on every play!!

Well, if they're not gonna call holding penalties then we're screwed, either.

I think defense should pretty much always be aggressive. I like blitzing a ton.

We didn't blitz on JJ's bad play, either. That's why is incredible jacked up.

I really think Williams is pressing too much with the blitz packages, and it seems to be intensifying every damn week. Everyone expected our front 4 to be super awesome, and teams game plan for it every week and making Quinn and Co. look silly. Get Quinn off the outside once and awhile, and switch up rushers

Maybe he is trying to make up for all the blitzes he couldn't call last year?

I'm just not a fan of it. The D-Line proved the last two years it didn't need to blitz 50% of the time to do its damage. I liked the games Fisher schemed last year when he took control from Walton.

Well, if they're not gonna call holding penalties then we're screwed, either.

Which is why I said.....can Williams and if that stops it, then you know what the reason was. Doesn't change the disgusting cheating by officials, but...

I just don't see any value of blitzing right now. Make the QB stay in the pocket as long as possible, and maybe we get lucky in the DBs do their jobs.

If blitzing is NOT getting sacks, then continuing to blitz as much as GW has been is just plain dumb.

The more I think about it, the more @jrry32 's theory of GW being the McDaniels of defense makes sense. And if the two of us are agreeing on something, it MUST be right! ;)

that makes to much sense to implement

GW does some crazy stuff, to include run blitzes, too though. The guy knows what he's doing, and since he's not going to be hired away for a while even if the defense starts playing lights out and leads this team to victories this is the aggressiveness we'll be seeing for some time. Also, our head coach is a Buddy Ryan 46 disciple, so IMO folks need to get over their concerns with blitzing as it's gonna happen for the next couple years and it's not a bad thing if you simply execute wtf he's calling. Even JLau just said this, it's clear what the problem is:

2nd/3rd year + players that still blow assignments in this scheme. It's the same scheme just with a DC who is using much more of its capabilities in his calls.

Williams is going to start benching dudes who continue to blow assignments if necessary. Jenks doesn't have anyone pushing him right now, so until Johnson returns they're gonna keep trying to get him to discipline his eyes. Ogletree same deal, the LB depth is so crappy their best bet is getting his head on straight.

I want to see this defense playing the way they're capable and clicking on all cylinders.I understand they are young and will have growing pains but there's enough mix of veterans on the unit for them to be playing better right now.

This defense isn't built to blitz. Our front four can rush the passer with four rushers, so why not drop seven into coverage? Blitzing allows the QB to release the ball quicker since our corners usually get burned relatively quickly. If we dropped more into coverage, we'd get more sacks. More stunts on the line, Brockers need to eat up two lineman, and get one on one's for Quinn and Long when he gets back.

This isn't the same scheme at all. I'm not even really sure what team you're watching if that's what you think.

I will say I liked the scheme SF runs. They play a lot of tight man coverage and when you watch the way the LB's and safeties are set up it just looks like there is not a lot of room to get open. When you watch us it's like there are holes WR's and TE's can just pick a spot to run to. Especially when blitzes fail.
Boy do we miss Chris Long.

Not sure if it's plain scheme or coaching but if I see one more misdirection that we bite on for an easy 1st down I'm going to lose my dinner.

Jeff has got to step in and do something with Williams. His blitz 50% of the game formula isn't working out for us so far.

Getting Tru and Chris Long back would be a great starting point. We REALLY miss those two.

I'm not a big fan of Williams' overly complex blitzing defenses.
Especially with a young team, K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple Stupid! - or at least less complex.

Guys need to calm down about the d. It's not the same system it's similar. The biggest issue is tactics. Gw loves to blitz and nothing will change that. Guys are still learning how to do I correctly. It's a work in progress. Discipline is learned through repetition. Team will be find. Coach needs to protect his young guys better. Or he is trying to make them grow up to fast

if we cant generate a rush blitzing what makes you think we can do it without. i look at it as a lose lose situation. Everybody not named Donaldneeds to step up.

At this point we need a Fs,Mlb,OLB. When Tru come back Gaines should be moved to the nickel and Joyner should be Fs. I think that will help the back end a lot
