I also think your thinking like me that it's perplexing to think they might consider carrying 3 at C ?

Its not perplexing to me at all. I believe for THIS season, Jones is being viewed as more of a Guard then necessarily a Center. Unless he lights it up, and is noticeably better than Barnes, I think they both stick. With the history of injuries across this unit, having all 3 of them here would seem logical.

I also think they have drafted over Washington. H has managed to stay in the mix only because he was the best at the time, in what was a very thin crop of interior linemen. That they now have brought back Saffold, drafted Robinson, and signed Joseph, Washington has run out of lives.

You might be right about Brandon W. because I was thinking he was right in the mix ?
I will not have a chance of getting down there til early August so Id appreciate your thoughts when you see them this week.
Ill be real interested to get your assessment of how GR is doing on his Pass Pro, and if they are running Hooey at both Tackle positions as my understanding is that they are going to see if he can be the swing Tackle.
I think Mike person is going to be inside at RG behind Roger Saffold ?

Fair enough, but I think whether Cunningham dresses or not, will be more a case of it being a choice between him or Mason. If one of them wins the KO Return duties, the other will most likely be the odd man out. There just isn't enough between them and/or Stacy that makes me feel comfortable enough in passing situations that they can be counted on to pass block. So ST aside, until that area is shored up, IMO, Pead still has a place on this roster.
like your 46 and agree about Pead

I see that you seem to be very high on Hooey, and for me, its too early to make any judgements on him. Based on what I saw from him last year, he will have to be drastically improved to garner any real consideration. And while i realize it was just ONE DAY in a very early OTA in the spring, they seemed to be auditioning Person for more than a backup RG role.

I will say, at the very least, this training camp should be very interesting as to how things develop and end up shaking out with regards to the o-line. For the first time in forever, they have legitimate depth across the unit, and it should really be a case of "best man wins" for the roster spots.

Yes...I would like to see him get the job done? ..But totally agree he has to earn it. He has legitimate size, and tools to play OT. I see Person, and the others more or less Guards.

I wanted to take an updated crack at this:

My 46 man Game day "active" roster for week 1 - Vikings

Offense (21)
QB: (2) Bradford; Hill
RB: (3) Stacy; Mason; Cunningham
TE: (3) Cook; Kendricks; Harkey
WR: (5) Austin; Britt; Quick; Givens; Pettis
OL: (8) Long; Robinson; Wells; Saffold; Barksdale; Barnes; Joseph; Jones

Defense (22)
DL: (8) Quinn; Long; Hayes: Sims; Brockers; Langford; Donald; Carrington
LB: (6) Laurinaitis; Ogletree; Dunbar; Armstrong; Bates; Steward
DB: (8) Jenkins; Johnson; Joyner; McDonald; McLeod; Alexander; Gaines; Reid

Specialists (3)
K: Zuerlien P: Hekker LS: McQuaide

Special Teams:
Kickoff Team:
Zuerlein; Carrington; Gaines; Reid; Joyner; McDonald; Alexander; Armstrong; Bates; Sims; Steward

Kickoff Return:
Reid; Carrington; Alexander; Steward; Armstrong; Bates; Sims; Jones; Barnes; Harkey; Joyner

Punt Coverage:
Reid; Cunningham; Armstrong; Steward; McQuaide; Sims; Bates; Harkey; Alexander; Gaines; Hekker

Punt Return: Austin; Reid; Gaines; Joyner; Alexander; Steward; Armstrong; Bates; Sims; Carrington; Harkey

The rest of the 53 (not dressing for week 1): Westbrooks, Bayer, McGee, Gilbert, Bond, Pead, Davis

Practice Squad: Bryant, Sam, Rhaney, Roberson, Watts, Van Dyk, Sabino, Moe

Suspended: Bailey

notes: Yes, I'm not ready to give up on Reid yet just because he is rusty and 'lost' in coverage - While I think he may not see the field on defense much, he is going to work his way into being a core ST guy including our kickoff returner. Pead makes the 53 man roster but doesn't suit up against the Vikings. This game is going to be a slugfest - we expect them to come out running and we expect to do the same.

Most difficult cut was Conrath - he can play - there just isn't a spot for him here. Hopefully, we can land a late pick for him rather than just letting him go.

When Bailey comes back, one of Givens or Pettis is going to be in street clothes on game day - but probably stays on the roster for now. I have 10 DBs on the 53 man as it is - and that number likely needs to go down to 9 - but its also our thinnest position, so we may carry that 10th guy and trim from elsewhere (but where?)

Hard to argue with much of O's 46 ....

A few changes once Bailey is back:

Offense (22)
QB: (2) Bradford; Hill
RB: (3) Stacy; Mason; Cunningham
TE: (3) Cook; Kendricks; Harkey
WR: (6) Austin; Britt; Quick; Givens; Pettis; Bailey
OL: (8) Long; Robinson; Wells; Saffold; Barksdale; Barnes; Joseph; Jones

Defense (21)
DL: (8) Quinn; Long; Hayes: Sims; Brockers; Langford; Donald; Carrington
LB: (5) Laurinaitis; Ogletree; Dunbar; Armstrong; Bates
DB: (8) Jenkins; Johnson; Joyner; McDonald; McLeod; Davis; Alexander; Reid

Specialists (3)
K: Zuerlien P: Hekker LS: McQuaide
I have a hard time believing Reid makes the team over Gaines. Especially with what the first few days have camp have told us.

I had Gaines making it, too.

Oh - you were quoting me from last week there - nevermind.

Curious why you have Westbrooks, who hasn't even seen the practice field yet, on the 53, and Sam who has been impressive thus far on the PS. Otherwise I can see Pead making the 46 for his pass protection and ST value, and maybe Cody Davis over Reid as well.

Reid may get cut completely - and from the sounds of camp reports - that is the most likely scenario - but I think once he has had a week or two to shake the cobwebs - he will be a special teams standout for us.

Westbrooks I think makes the 53 man but doesn't dress all year. Why? Because another team will jump on him. Of course - that is contingent on him showing something in the preseason. If he stays hurt or hidden - then he is probably a safe PS stash. After all, all teams did have chances to draft him. Sam's way onto the 46 game day roster is thru special teams - if he makes an impact, then good for him - but its not very easy to break into those special team roles - competition is fierce.

As I put together the STs - I tried to go with the kind of lineups they have used in years past (the same number of smaller faster guys, bigger stronger guys etc)

Ray Ray, Bates, and Steward - the bottom 3 linebackers - you can pretty much count on for every ST. Carrington was a special teams standout in Buffalo. Sims has always been pretty good on STs. I'm kind of assuming that Alexander will find his way into a core ST role. Then you have the DBs. Generally, I wouldn't want to have Jenkins and Tru out there - too much risk of injury - although I think both were used on punt coverage last year. Gaines, Reid, McGee, Davis, Roberson, Daniels, Woodard, etc - if you want to dress - this is the area to win those final roster spots. Joyner's roster spot is obviously safe, but I think he will end up being a core ST player as well this year. The 4th and even 3rd RB spot up for grabs in this regard as well - right Pead? Pead apparently ran with the 1s today on special teams - if Fassel says he wants him, then Pead gets the spot. I think Stacy was much improved in pass protection towards the end of the year - but it wouldn't surprise me to see Pead suit up and Mason be inactive depending on the matchups. It also wouldnt surprise me if Pead gets cut outright if Fassel finds guys who offer more in coverage.

If he does, it would be as TE4 / special teams monster. I'm rooting for him - the Rams obviously care enough about him to spend the energy trying to convert him - so who knows?
