Practice Report 7/29: First Padded Practice

PRACTICE IN PADS

It seems fitting that the Rams first padded practice of 2018 came on a Sunday.

The first padded practice of camp provided a bit more of a realistic look at the what this year’s Rams might look like on Sundays that count.

Throughout the first few days of training camp, head coach Sean McVay has mentioned how it’s easier to evaluate practices once players are in pads.

On Saturday, McVay said his team won’t go full-tackle football during camp, but padded practices will allow the team to “thud.”

“I think we’ve got a lot of guys that know how to practice [with] pads on,” McVay said following Saturday’s practice. “Want to try to make sure we’re getting that physicality, but also limiting the risk for injury with some of things that can occur when guys are going to the ground, consistently getting rolled up on.”

Veteran center John Sullivan exited Sunday’s practice early, but McVay said he expects Sullivan to be “OK.”

Overall, McVay considered Day 1 in pads a success.

“For the first day, the biggest thing is great energy. Guys were competing but doing it in a smart way and that’s what we like,” McVay said.

PHYSICAL DEFENSE

McVay got his desired physicality and maybe more in some instances on Sunday afternoon. Some of the first “thuds” of the season could be heard when the defensive linemen, led by Michael Brockers and Ndamukong Suh, joined veteran Andrew Whitworth’s offensive line for a series of drills to start practice.

Once scrimmage was underway, fans reacted to a handful of hits that may have surpassed McVay’s definition of the word “thud” — kicked off by a strong defensive effort by defensive back Isaiah Johnson on tight end Gerald Everett.

The tough hits on tight ends continued just a few minutes later, when safety Marqui Christian laid the biggest hit of the day on tight end Temarrick Hemingway. Christian rounded out his big day with an interception.

Big hits and all, McVay praised his teams’ now-padded defensive effort.

“I thought the defense did a great job, came out with good energy, matched a lot of our concepts, played the run really well, and the offense found a way to have a little bit of success,” McVay said.

THROWING AND CATCHING

In a padded practice that seemed heavily focused on the run game, many of the highlights from Day 4 — for better or worse — came with the ball in the air.

Third-year quarterback Brandon Allen took the majority of snaps on Sunday. Fellow QB Sean Mannion was away from practice for the birth of his child.

Starting quarterback Jared Goff seemed to take fewer snaps on his fourth consecutive day of work in Irvine. The pair combined to throw three interceptions, two of them from Allen.

Following practice, McVay addressed Goff’s passing into Wade Phillips’ newly remodeled secondary.

“I think those windows close up a little bit faster with some of those guys that are on defense. We always talk about reading with your feet and sometimes it’s appropriate to be able to try to fit those in those tight windows and sometimes the coverage dictates, we need to progress and do it a little bit faster manner,” McVay said.

Even though many of the windows slammed shut on his quarterbacks, McVay had good things to say about Goff’s ability to bounce back, and elaborated on just how difficult the quarterback position can be.

“But, what he’s done such a good job of is being receptive where he’s able to kind of – he’s seeing it real well right now. Even whether it be good or bad he’s able to kind of correct himself immediately after,” McVay said. “When you’re looking at 11 bodies on defense, rush is coming at you, different coverages — it’s a lot for a quarterback. I think, really, our group as a whole has done a nice job. But always, always striving to improve.”

While Goff and Allen, throwing in pads for the first time, struggled at times on Sunday against a physical backfield, a few of the Rams’ wide receivers wowed fans with some impressive catches.

Tight end Gerald Everett had undoubtedly the catch of the day during some red-zone work. Everett turned just in time, leaping to snag an Allen pass over his defender.

First-year Ram Brandin Cooks also showed off his hands, reeling in well-paced pass that Cooks bobbled across the middle of the field amidst tight coverage. He then showed off his speed, racing to the end zone for what likely would’ve been a touchdown.

So there you have it for all the Mannion haters out there and I don't understand why? Brandon Allen (who I've been a supporter of) threw a couple of picks, now it's a tough defense we all knew that, however, Sean Mannion for some odd reason seems to be the least loved back up Quarterback.

Now I like Allen because I believe the fact that he can run adds a different dimension, however, Sean Mannion IMHO can play in this league and I do believe could be successful, more like Foles was with the Eagles. If we learned on thing about back up Quarterback the right scheme is very important as Foles & even Case Keenum showcased that along with Goff too.

Mannion has a big time arm, yes he cannot move in the pocket, but he can make all the throws and if somebody like Kellen Clemens can play 11 years in the NFL, so can Mannion.

FWIW's on @VeteranRamFan guy Luis Perez, who's new nickname is trip, stumble and fumble, it's the curse of #9 for Quarterbacks, the Joe Germaine curse. For those who don't remember, the Rams drafted Joseph Berton Germaine out of The Ohio State University back in 1999 and he was not good.

In fact, Mike Martz could not stand him and after Martz released Germaine and signed Jamie Martin, Martin wore #9 and Martz instructed Martin to change numbers because it reminded him of Joe Germaine and the next practice Martin wore 8. The curse of #9 as Perez should switch to #2 and he might just play better.

I think it's because mannion had a following of people who preferred him to Goff , which was really stupid lol. Exactly what you're saying about mannion was happening to goff before he blew up last year. Even Dickerson was calling for mannion when Goff was clearly the more talented guy

Thanks for all the pics and reports. Sounds like our defense is going to be a bit better this year. Pretty cool.

Thiry--Gonzalez Notes

Quote of the day Sunday, courtesy of Sean McVay, when asked about Aaron Donald's situation: "No, nothing new on Aaron. No news. Unless I go inside and Twitter is blowing up my phone." McVay was then asked if he had a secret Twitter account. Chuckling, McVay responded: "What do you think? I don't have a burner account."

Outside linebacker Matt Longacre has shown some progress since undergoing season-ending back surgery last December. Longacre participated in individual drills through the first two days of training camp, then took part in four plays of team work on Saturday and six on Sunday. Longacre, who had 5 1/2 sacks as a backup last season, is competing for the starting spot opposite of Samson Ebukam.

A few highlights from the Rams' fourth day of training camp as they put on full pads for the first time and followed individual drills with about an hour and 15 minutes of 11-on-11 action: Jared Goff connected with Robert Woods on a crossing route in which Woods laid out to make a great catch in front of Dominique Hatfield... Todd Gurley consistently rushed to the second- and third-level of the defense... Cornerback Troy Hill intercepted a pass from Brandon Allen... In the red zone Goff connected with Michael Thomas and Gerald Everett in the back of the end zone in front of John Johnson. Goff also connected with Cooper Kupp for a touchdown.

Rookie report from the fourth day of Rams training camp, the first in full pads: John Franklin-Myers, a fourth-round pick from Stephen F. Austin, continues to get some work with the starters at outside linebacker. Running back John Kelly, a sixth-round pick from Tennessee, broke off a long run in the first series of team action. Kelly and second-year pro Justin Davis are competing for the third RB spot on the roster.

First day of full pads at Rams training camp and center John Sullivan had to leave about halfway through the practice as he suffered an apparent arm injury during 11-on-11 work. Coach Sean McVay said after the workout that team trainer Reggie Scott indicated that Sullivan would be okay. "Reggie seems to think he just got his arm banged up a little bit," McVay said. "Haven't gotten inside yet to find out, but Reggie didn't seem too concerned about it." Sullivan started 15 games last season.

To those concerned about the Rams' depth/talent at linebacker — it isn't expected to show up as much of an issue. Rams are expected to play a lot fewer four-linebacker sets, which means they won't really operate much as a traditional 3-4. They'll play to the depth in their secondary, which means slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman will be on the field more often. DB Blake Countess might be, too. I imagine Samson Ebukam and Matt Longacre will be more of an edge-rushing rotation, with Cory Littleton and Mark Barron in the middle.

Good point, but that's not Mannion's fault. Goff proved last season that he's going to be an upper echelon Quarterback and teamed with McVay, it's a good match. That's why I will trust McVay to make the right call for the backup QB. If he's comfortable with Mannion, then great, however, if he feels that Allen has showcased enough and they are able to get a conditional pick for Mannion, then I'm fine with that too.

Well first off I agree that the scheme is critical, that and fit. And I don't hate Mannion and I can't think of anyone here who seems to, btw. I just think he's a backup level talent. And not to nitpick or anything, but he doesn't deserve any comparison to Foles as of yet. As maligned as Foles was during his time with us, he had at least demonstrated a top-notch statistical season as a starter at this level, albeit under Kelly running a college offense. So there was precedent for him to come off the bench and play at a high level. Mannion has very little to no precedent to be considered in that comparison.

Where Allen is better than Mannion is his movement ability. In the WCO that we run, with the misdirection and movement that starts at the QB position and which require quick footwork, that's what you call a better fit. Whether he gives Mannion a run for his money as backup, of course, comes down to his grasp of the offense and execution, which will go on into preseason games.

I think that battle for the backup position is real. And it's going to heat up as camp goes forward IMO.

You are not going to believe this! I got the numbers messed up! I had Perez as 8 and Allen as 9!!!

So for everything I said about Perez, strike that and make it Allen!

OMG! I am so sorry for the mixup. I am going to have to go back and look at my pics and see if Perez is even in them! But based on this major F-UP, I must change my tune about Perez. He will not make the PS but Allen could make the 53 as he is not PS eligible, I believe.

Now there is even a bigger battle for QB #2 between Mannion and Allen!

Allen can be on the PS still. New rule last year made it so teams can have up to 4 players on the PS who have up to two years of experience.

Right, but isn't this Allen's third year? Oh wait, so he has two already (up to two years) and this would be his last chance to be on the PS.

I think I got it.

If he was on the 53 man roster for 4 weeks, or maybe it's 6 I'd have to read again, that qualifies as a year. If he was on the practice squad all year I don't think it matters.
