Jeff Fisher’s Rams were a hotbed of quarterback talent

Nick Foles is the Super Bowl MVP, and he’s the NFL’s all-time leader in passer rating in the postseason.

Case Keenum led the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game, where he lost to Foles’ Eagles.

Jared Goff is one of the NFL’s best young quarterbacks, a 23-year-old Pro Bowler.

What do those three quarterbacks have in common? They were the three quarterbacks who started for the Rams in 2015 and 2016.

Any coach would kill to have that kind of talent at quarterback, and yet Jeff Fisher’s Rams put together an ugly offense with those three at the helm.

In 2015 the Rams went 7-9 and finished dead last in in the NFL in both passing yards and total yards.

In 2016 the Rams went 4-12, again finished dead last in the NFL in total yards, and finished 31st in passing yards.

When Fisher was fired late in 2016, there was some talk that his failure with the Rams was all a result of never having a good quarterback. But that’s not quite right. Fisher had three good quarterbacks. The problem was that Fisher, even with three good quarterbacks, couldn’t put together a good offense.

Me: Talent was acquired, talent was not used.

Hahahaha. Actually, i think there's a real argument to be made for some QB's being ruined and others being made. I believe that had Derek Carr, Joey Harrington and definitely Sam Bradford could have been good QBs had they had a different coach and different supporting cast. I'm not sure Tom Brady would be Tom Brady had he not gone to NE and played in that system for his entire career (seriously, he's played in the same offense his entire career, just different coordinators, think about that!).

I really believe David Carr was actually not as bad as a lot of people think. When you get sacked 70 times a year, it’s hard to feel comfortable in the pocket.

Fish's name is mud right now, and it's deserved. But once again his big mistakes were his coordinator hires. If you hire bad coordinators or dudes in over their heads, even a guy whose philosophy doesn't match your locker room, your units will get eaten alive at this level.

Also, people conveniently overlook the very shrewd additions made last offseason to the offense. Without those additions this might well have been another .500ish team. McVay would not have looked like a genius relying on guys like Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Brian Quick, et al. Not to mention the addition of a LT who can hold things down.

I was waiting for this article come out.
It's a true indictment of how bad Jeff Fishers coaching hires were.

Our coordinator's under Fisher were horrendous, we covered that a billion times over. It was Fisher's responsibility to hire those coaches.

It wasn't just Fisher's coordinators. They were just doing what Fisher wanted. And Fish drafted/signed all the players HE wanted. I'm not saying his offensive coordinators were good... but they would have been better if not for Fish. JMHO.

You really can't make up how bad of a coach Fisher really is/was. What McVay turned into the highest scoring squad in 2017, Fisher couldn't even get them to 31st in 2016, smh.

The success of some guys in 2017 is a damming indictment of Fisher and the lousy coordinator hires he made on offense.

But it goes to personnel too. One of the thoughts has recurred to me in this postseason - especially after a couple of spectacular catches Sunday - was Fisher's absolutely boneheaded pick of Brian Quick over Alshon Jeffrey. The latter just earned a longer term deal and played great on Sunday in the biggest stage in football. The former went to a team that had its WR corps decimated in the offseason and still could barely get on the field. What did he have this year, something like 5 catches?

That's a dumb article. NO ONE thought the Eagles would go to the Super Bowl, let alone win the damn thing. All media members were on the Vikings and Saints jock, with some on the Falcons. The mantra was all about seeding, about teams actually WANTING to go to Philly for an "easy" win.

To say that Nick Foles was this stud QB the whole way is ridiculous. He did nothing for the Rams, and nothing for the Chiefs as a backup. Hell he did nothing in his 2nd year as an Eagle.

Similarily, no one gave Case Keenum his due. The Vikings' success was all about the defense. And when Teddy Bridgewater was activiated, Case was a "week to week" QB. DUMB.

EVERYONE pissed on Jared Goff as a rookie (!), even though it was reported way back during minicamps that he had a long way to go. Everyone continued to piss on him even with Sean McVay on board, and already proclaimed him a bust.

This is just the way articles, especially on PFT, are full of shit. I'm not arguing pro/anti-Jeff Fisher here, we've already been down this road. I'm pointing out articles that are based on knee-jerk reaction and don't even bother to backtrack what was previously. Fuck you, PFT. Fuck you.

Interesting and revealing thread. I, however, have a bit of a different take fwiw. Many Rams fans bemoan the low quality OC hires by Fish but I believe that he didn't have much choice in the matter because any OC worth his salt would NEVER work for an inept idiot like the Fisher King.

Think about it for a minute. Your name is Kyle Shanahan, or Sean McVay, are you going to work for a dude that is stuck in the Stone Age (to quote my very Millennial kids) or a HC like Jay Gruden who knows and understands the modern NFL offense?
Which job would be the most helpful to your career?
Guys, it is my contention that Jeff Fisher hired incompetent fools like himself because that was the only ones he could get.
His "reputation" definitely preceded him and made him a pariah to any up and coming offensive assistant.

Just my 0.02

I can still remember his words when hired.

"We will win with a powerful running game and play strong defense"

No Jeffrey, five years later and we still could not.

Today you need a passing attack somewhat more sophisticated than a sun dial.

I can't only partially agree with that, at least not with his first OC hire after joining the Rams - Schotty over Hue Jackson. Say what you will about Jackon as head coach in Cleveland, but he was very good in his time as OC in Cincinnati, and better than Schotty ever was or ever will be. So that's strike 1 against Fisher. I think after Schotty left is when the truth of your theory really played out, because he couldn't seem to get anyone decent to interview for the job, in part because they knew he wanted to run a stone age offense and wouldn't give the OC full control.
