10 Observations from Day 2 of Training Camp

1) Friday’s session was closed to Rams season ticket holders, but Crawford Field at UC Irvine was still packed. There was plenty of energy following the big announcement that Los Angeles has changed its primary “color” uniform to the iconic royal blue and yellow for the next two seasons.

2) Rams Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jackie Slater was in attendance for Friday’s practice. He spent some time talking with the defensive linemen before the session began, particularly defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. “It’s great, obviously, to have them around, be able to pick their brains, be able to talk to them, interact with them,” Suh would say of the interaction after practice.

3) With such a large crowd, fans got audibly excited when quarterback Jared Goff hit wide receiver Brandin Cooks with a deep pass down the left sideline. It was a nice ball, but it should’ve been — the offense was going against air. Those are the plays that should work, and in this case they did.

4) The defensive line spent a good portion of individual drills practicing ripping the ball out from a ballcarrier. Players partnered up, with one playing the part of running back with the other tasked to create a takeaway running up from behind. On one of Suh’s reps, he punched the ball out so hard that it landed in a hospitality tent. Sources say Suh is a pretty strong guy.

5) During one-on-one drills, cornerback Kevin Peterson nearly picked off quarterback Sean Mannion on a short out route. Peterson read the route perfectly and got his hands on the ball, but just didn’t complete the catch.

6) Also in one-on-ones, wide receiver Robert Woods made a nice move to shake cornerback Marcus Peters and then made a nice catch in the middle of the field. That’s not easy to do with an elite man coverage player like Peters.

7) Later in the session, Goff connected with tight end Gerald Everett on a ball deep over the middle. Everett had to stretch out to make the catch, which was fit into a tight window to evade double coverage. Everett has flashed a bit over the first two days of camp, making a number of receptions on the first- and second-team offense.

8) During 11-on-11, Cooks made a nice catchover the middle that also drew some cheers from the crowd. This one was a bit more impressive since Cooks had some competition aside from the air — Peters was draped all over him. An “iron sharpens iron” situation, to be sure.

9) Head coach Sean McVay is known for using different tempos to try to keep a defense off guard. With that in mind, the offense did get in some no-huddle work during the second 11-on-11 segment of the day. Goff connected with wideout Robert Woods on a deep crossing route for what would’ve been at least a 20-yard gain.

10) Finally, linebacker Ramik Wilson has flashed over the first two days, consistently getting his hands on the ball. On Friday, Wilson nearly picked off two passes in the flat during separate 11-on-11 drills. Wilson has received the bulk of playing time at inside linebacker alongside linebacker Cory Littleton early in camp.

I think we are for the most part going to be VERY happy with Ramik Wilson and Cory Littleton.

Very happy, indeed.

Tyler HIgbee having a great camp and according to McVay a tremendous off season. @kurtfaulk will believe it, when he sees it.

If Ramik Wilson plays like he did last year in KC, he'll see a lot of playing time here.

I predicted Wilson will be rotating in at Lber. Good to have him around with Barron needing to have limited practice and his nagging injuries.

I’ve gotta say that I’’m pleasantly surprised by the multiple positive reports on Higbee.

I was very high on the young man when drafted. Thought he might be a steal.

But he’s disappointed since then. Knowing how McVay loves his TE’s and knowing about his proven track record of developing them and using them, I was frustrated with Higbee.

But I have no agenda with Higbee. Nothing would please me more than to see him blossom into a real weapon. He’s got a wonderful opportunity here, let’s see if he can take advantage. Fingers crossed.

It takes time.
One big plus was his improved blocking over the course of last year.

Feel good about Higbee this year, first year he had to adjust and Higbee did improve last year as a blocker and did make some plays, but needed more consistency catching the football. I too was really upset over the dropped pass in the playoff game in the end zone, but this is a new year with a blank page and McVay commented on Higbee having a tremendous off season and that has transcended early in training camp, so full steam ahead and I expect the TE's to be a huge difference in McVay's offense in 2018.

I think I've entered the twilight zone here! Compliments for Higbee?

I thought I was going to make it to camp today but plans have changed. Family first, you know.

I will be there tomorrow, Sunday. I understand we will have pads on?

Love hearing me some "POPS"!

I don't have a lot of faith in Higbee. I don't trust him to make the tough catches. I'd really love to see Everett blow up this year. He's such a talent.

Same. We're in that time of year where hope is high on everyone though, so it's whatever. But I'll be surprised if Higs ever develops consistent hands, let alone an ability to focus in contested catches. Just seems to me that when it comes to hands some guys are limited, and he's one of them. Huge dude, though, certainly looks the part.

I also don't expect too much from Wilson at LB. To my eye he's just another chase/weak side dude on the inside (i.e lesser version of Barron), start him on the strong side and he's going to struggle over time. Good depth addition though.

Littleton might be able to handle that strong side run role on the inside, though. I think it's him or Kiser at that spot, with Kiser being better in the pure run support role but weaker in coverage/drop ability.

Agree with everything said here.

Kiser is the guy I'm hoping really surpises during camp. When pads come on that's when we'll really see what Micah is about. Kiser is what this defense has been needing from a play style standpoint. I also wouldn't sleep on Hager either. Not likely he wins the starter gig but the little I have seen of him, I like.

Totally agree on Kiser! He was the player I really wanted the Rams to draft and was greatly disappointed when they kept passing on him AND could not believe he was still available to the Rams in the 5th Round! I will be very surprised and disappointed if Kiser is not starting for the Rams by next season and does not have a great career for the Rams!

With your Avatar you ought not post in the Jimmy Garrapolo dates a porn star thread. Somehow that'd just be so wrong.
