Report: Vince McMahon sells $100M of WWE shares, potentially to restart XFL
vince-mcmahon-xfl-getty.jpg

If the XFL isn't coming back, Vince McMahon is doing a poor job of convincing the world that's true.

Less than a week after a WWE spokesman issued a statement to Deadspinthat left the door open for the return of the defunct professional football league, McMahon and his new, self-funded Alpha Entertainment venture have taken over filings for five different trademarks of "XFL," ESPN's Darren Rovell reported Thursday.

The filings were originally made by the WWE months ago, as Rovell later clarified, but "the records say they did it" on Dec. 16 and the trademark requests have since been relinquished to McMahon and Alpha Entertainment, which WWE previously told Deadspin is an unrelated entity meant "to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football."

A follow-up report by Rovell on ESPN.com said McMahon is also fresh off a sale of 3.34 million WWE shares (or about $100 million worth) to help fund his Alpha Entertainment company amid his pursuit of a new XFL.

The trademarks, which were "abandoned" between 2002 and 2005, also cover merchandise related to a potential league. And they aren't the only ones being used to try to identify a professional football league under Alpha, as McMahon and Co. are also seeking the rights to "URFL," per Rovell.

McMahon himself has yet to address rumors of an XFL comeback, but Brad Shepard had already reported earlier on the day of WWE's statement that McMahon might have an official announcement on a revived XFL as soon as Jan. 25, 2018.

As CBS Sports' Adam Silverstein previously noted, "the original incarnation of the XFL was a joint venture between WWE (then-WWF) and NBC with McMahon and former NBC executive Dick Ebersol spearheading the project." Dubbed an outdoor pro football league with eight teams, added physicality and an infusion of WWE personality, it ceased operations in 2001, the same year it hosted its inaugural season.

What he should do is start a legitimate AAA league. Use the smaller cities and regionally space them so that teams from each region have short transits to/from those points.

Run a tight budget with a basic paycheck that will allow the league to make money, but still allow the players on the cusp to continue the dream.

Maybe Vince should make WWE interesting again instead of reviving a former fail

Everything that could be done in WWE, has been done. They have run out of themes and run out of personalities to play them out. Triple H and Stephanie proved they can't carry the franchise with 'the authority' act. Now they are rehashing Raw vs Smack down. Bringing Curt Angle back is dumb. They can't find anyone with real charisma anymore. The best they got are Ambrose and Rollins. The rest of them repeat the same tired shtick every week. The last original was Stonecold and he may have been the best act of all time. I am so glad my kid has gotten bored with it. It was on our TV way too much for a few years.

It turns out that the WWE.com was a big mistake. The big matches used to have an allure. Fans that couldn't afford to pay the pay for view fees or refused to pay stayed interested in the soap opera because of the mystery and build up. Those matches carried a certain awe about them and the reporting and highlights made them look fantastic. Reality is that once you have seen them routiny (every month), Raw and Smackdown get incredibly boring in comparison. Then you start to realise that those main events all start looking the same too. By giving the fans too much exposure they weakened the brand. Sound familiar?...Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football....Monday night Raw, Tuesday Night Smackdown. It seems the old adage is right. Less is more.

I think Vince wants to start more of an old school league with less rules. He thinks fans want violence. Maybe he sees NFL ratings dipping and wants to steal the fans with suplex and RKO type tackles. Or he just wants to eventually become a minor league for the NFL, like NFL Europe. He is getting kind of old for a new venture like this. All of those steroids he took are going to catch up to him eventually.

I disagree with all of that. Stars are there. But for dumb reasons like not liking Becky Lynch's accent (seriously) many stars aren't booked well. Wyatt Family was awesome, but they were booked to lose every match and made out to be weak. Now they are broken up and lost in the shuffle.

It's also too predictable and standardized. We know what every show will start out with (a long 20 minute promo) and what every show will end with (a match that ends in DQ). The positive is that we do get treated to some gems every now and then. But overall the "anything can happen" shtick is gone and both shows are the same.

Last thing I hate is they have to brag about everything. Whether it be about reaching X amount of social media followers, how much they donated to charity, or social justice...it's constant and in your face. Total tune out time.

Too much exposure? 2 shows a week on national tv. Only hardcore fans that pay for their network and watch the other shows.

Once the first chair came out in that "sport" I was thinking it was over. I mean.... what could you possibly do next that could be that riveting? Then it was women with huge fake tits using the chairs. Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that.

So don't underestimate them. I'm sure they are busy coming up with the successor to the folding chair. Maybe they'll figure out a way to hide an anvil in their speedo.

Stars are there.
Um.... Sorry sir. Could you define "stars"?

I guess you are still into it. You are free to disagree but the fact is the website is not making up for the money that WWE is losing. Profits are decreasing and Vince is grasping at straws on how to fix it.

Bringing back 50-60 year old, out of shape wrestlers like Undertaker is proof that they lack current star power. Sting was so out of shape it was laughable having him return. Then they bring the Rock back once a year and Gimpy Stonecold makes an appearance. If it had the same level of stars there would be no need to pay these former wrestlers millions to make cameos. They are continually trying to recapture the glory days because the current roster is not getting it done. I don’t remember them bringing, Larry Zbisko, Bruno Samartino, Chief Jay Strongbow and Billy Whitewolf etc.. back when they had better characters and storylines. Back during the NWO days wrestling was loaded with star power. Now there are about two guys that can talk shit well.
