Here's the household name fans are excited about—Ray-Ray Armstrong.

Armstrong was suspended for the first four games of 2011 for accepting improper benefits from a booster, while the Miami Hurricanes released him entirely prior to the 2012 season.

It's been a while since Armstrong has played a full season of football, but he still has the talent.

Like safety T.J. McDonald—St. Louis' third-round draft pick out of USC—Armstrong is stiff in pass coverage, but he brings the thunder in run support.

In terms of pure talent, it's very difficult to find an undrafted rookie of Armstong's caliber. Expect him to make the final cut as the third or fourth safety.

It would be intresting to see if this kids talent is still with him after the layoff and Fisher and co makes him into a productive player.

Overview

The former Miami Hurricanes safety was forced to sit out the 2012 season after attempting to transfer to Faulkner University, which plays at the NAIA level. Instead, he spent the season in a coaching role and is now looking to get his playing career back on track.


At Miami's pro day, Armstrong ran the 40-yard dash in 4.72 and 4.69 seconds, had a 4.24-second short shuttle and 7.20-second three-cone drill. He had a 34 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-8 broad jump. He also had 18 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press.

I've heard alot of good things about this kid. I think Softli said he was near the top of draft prospects from Kiper a couple years ago. Could be a diamond for us.

We already have enough box safeties, and that's really all he can bring to the table right now. Unless they're able to transition him to LB. He's all about delivering a punishing blow and making plays in tight quarters. When he's asked to cover a lot of ground and make open field tackles all by himself, it's not always pretty. I'm all for moving him to LB if he can put on the pounds (he's already about 230), because he already hits like a linebacker. Or he could be another nickel corner in short yardage situations.

Sounds to me like they have already made the decision to move him to LB. It's done often enough. Variety of reasons and the Dude covered them.

Anybody remember who made the game saving tackle on the last play of our superbowl win against the Titans? Mike Jones. Had a pretty good career for us. Came out of college as a running back and Big Al took him on as a LB project and it took 2 years to get Mike ready. DV scooped him up for peanuts.

If we really like him as a player and individual, we can stash a project like this on our practice squad. He'll get a full year of training as a LB since no other team is likely to claim a LB project from our practice squad. Once he's on the practice squad, he could lose weight and move him back to safety.

Pittsburgh did it with James Harrison and what a success he was and is.

We could be looking at him as sort of a cover LB if you will. When we play teams with real pass catching TEs like Vernon Davis, you may see him on the field. Just not sure he actually makes the roster this season though.

Certainly possible. Armstrong could also be our utility guy this year.
