Rams tie Broncos for most sacks in NFL
Written by
Jordan Palmer

(KSDK Sports) -- The Rams defense generated six sacks on the day, tying the Denver Broncos for most sacks in the NFL with 52. Entering Week 17 the Rams were tied for third alongside Green Bay with 46 sacks.

DEs Chris Long and William Hayes and LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar each recorded a sack in the first quarter. The last time the Rams posted three sacks in a single quarter came against the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 21, 2012 during the first quarter.

Hayes recorded his seventh sack on the year for a loss of five yards, a career-high for the fifth-year veteran.

Dunbar's first quarter sack gave him 4.5 on the season, a career-best. According to press box statistics, Dunbar also led the team in tackles with 11 (four solo).

Long notched a pair of sacks in the first half and finished the game with three for a total loss of 26 yards. The last time Long recorded three sacks in a single game came on Oct. 30, 2011 against the New Orleans Saints.

DE Robert Quinn pushed his season sack total to 10.5 after bringing down Seahawks QB Russell Wilson for a loss of two yards early in the second quarter. The sack marked the team's 50th of the season.

Long and Quinn are the first pair of Rams to record double-digit sack numbers since Grant Wistrom and Kevin Carter generated 11 and 10 sacks, respectively, in 2000.

And from a team that didn't have a substantial lead in which the defense could just pin their ears back and rush the passer. That's saying something.

Agreed! That is impressive. This D is going to be something NOBODY wants to face very soon. Wait until they add a high end Safety and OLB!

Really happy to see that.

Now I just hope they add on to that total and Hayes is brought back.

It's quite the building block. There are just a couple spots on this defense that need an improvement. Very exciting.

Something that back in August we viewed as a deep part of the team was CB...with the likelihood that Bradley Fletcher isn't brought back it makes me think we will see a CB drafted in the mid-to-late part of the draft again this year. Tru Johnson is going to be a starter sooner rather than later.

I didn't poop myself, but I'm still ecstatic. It's not even a moral victory which is the best part. It's a legitimate accomplishment and a great yard stick for the youngest team in the lead.

The boost in sacks is directly related to the exceptional play at CB.

Long and Quinn get the numbers. Finnegan and Jenkins with the assist.

I'm not sure you can point at just the CB play. What about the push and run stopping we were getting from the DT position? That certainly wasn't there last year. CB play was vastly improved - no doubt. But the DT position IMO was a huge key as well.
